I am 40 years old with a 4 year old son and I am not looking to have anymore children. His sisters are 21 and 19! I am tired of the heavy period (still have one even on Mirena) but from what I have read, the partial is better then the full. Thoughts???

There is another option besides a partial hysterectomy it is called Her Option. I attended a seminar my gynecologist had on it. Was very interesting and convincing. Would have it done but in my situation it could not be done as an office procedure as I would prefer. You can learn more on the website it is www.HerOption.com

When I was going to have mine my doctor and I discussed a partial. Because I am heavy set I decided to go with the full because the doctor told me that it is harder to catch ovarian cancer in heavy set women than others...even though its hard period to catch it...I did not want to take a chance. There were other factors involved to but too long to mention here...but that was my main reason.

I had a partial last year and I have never felt better! I still have the ovaries and never have to worry about the heaviness or cramping or extreme headaches ever again. I also had it done vaginally...way better way to go if you could. No external incision and faster recoup time. If you feel you need it done this is the way to go!

You should find out why your periods have become so heavy. This happened to me and I found out I had a fibroid. In the end I had a D and C and an ablation procedure. This is only month two since I had the procedure but it has helped and my periods alreay have been A LOT less heavy. I use to have to wear a super plus tampon and so far I only have to wear a regular tampon for about 3 days and then nothing at all. Look into it. I am glad I did.

I had a partial a few years ago because of the horrible very heavy periods I was having. At first the doctor recommended what they called a balloon treatment where they just clean up the uterine lining, but that wouldn't work for me because of heavy scar tissue (which was actually causing the heavy periods). My only option was partial hysterectomy. It was worth it because of no more periods or the fatigue that plagued me during them. There were some drawbacks in the sexual department though, so do your homework and be sure you're willing to deal with that. Weight gain was also somewhat of an issue. If you're truly only looking for an alternative to birth control, tubal ligation would be the easier on your body route, though you continue to have periods.

I've never heard of a partial hysterectomy. Is there a reason why you wouldn't go for a tubal ligation?
