He is ready to start potty training when he does not like a wet diaper on. If the wet diaper doesn't seem to bother him, then he is NOT ready. When you start potty training, discontinue using diapers, or pull ups. You need to put cloth training pants, or regular boys underwear on him so he feels the wetness of the cloth, or the urine running down his leg. Also, if there is a father, or grandfather that he can go in the bathroom with, that will help. I had a small step that my son would stand on when his father went in the bathroom and he potty trained very quickly. Also, do not give anything to drink an hour or two before you put him to bed. Then have him potty before you put him down for the evening. Give him lots of praise.

First of all, When u decide to start there should be no going back. So be sure u both are ready! For the first week u sit on the "potty" with your child, for twenty minutes or so at a time. Read books or play with toys with him, don't be discouraged if nothing happens, he has to get comfortable with the bathroom and 'potty'. Then make a point of saying ' I have to go potty' then get up and go. Ask him often if he has to go as well. If he makes in his pants (diaper) then take it and drop it in the 'potty' so he makes the connection that that's what he should do too.

The deciding factor for my son and I was bed wetting, after about a month of potty training, I stopped putting him to bed with a diaper on. I put thick (long-john) material underwear on him,(and plastic on the bed)! Then when he wet, it didn't feel the same, so he woke up, wanting to be warm and dry again.

My last tid-bit is lots of praise for a job well done!

Try not to make him feel pressured though, remember this is brand new to him.

Good Luck!
