I try to emphasize to my kids(9 and 18) that if they want me to have more time to do fun things with them, they do have to help around the house. For instance, when we all help with dinner and cleanup, there is extra time to play minigolf, rent a movie, etc. Of course the 18 yr old kind of has her own schedule with with work and friends, but she is still expected to help out when she is home. Also we try to plan one fun family centered activity each weekend, even if its just a few hours at the beach.

My solution to this when I was single, was Mom & Me weekends. At least once a month, the weekend would be devoted to ding things with my daughter . . . no cleaning, no one else, just her & me. When I started dating again, we spent a lot of weekends out & about with the new Man, lot's of fun bonding time! Then 2 years ago I decided to go back to school. All the extra school work on top of work & house chores made it more difficult to try and make time for my daughter. To make up for it, in the summer I take a week off of work & we go on vacation, just the 2 of us. Last year we did a road trip all over the state, this year to save funds, we went to the property up north & went on daily Kayaking trips from there.
My daughter is 9 now so I can do more adventurous things with her now, but when she was little & it was weekends, we'd go to the movies, have a special dinner out together, go to the park, or simply take our dog out walking . . . anything we both could enjoy . . . . it was our special time together! My daughter always looked forward to our weekends when she was very little, she now spends all year looking forward to our week in the summer!
