My 18 month old just got tubes about 10 days ago. I also work for a pharmaceutical company that does research in the ear/nose/throat domain. In general, the rule is 3 ear infections in 6 months or 6 infections in 12 months. They don't help everyone, and sometimes they fall out, but if you're fighting chronic ear infections it's worth a trip to the ENT.
So far, so good for us- there was fluid in his ears when we saw the ENT, 7 days after completing a course of antibiotics for an ear infection. His 18 month well-baby was Friday, and his ears are clear and dry! Good luck!

Both my sons had loads of ear infections the eldest was 4 years old when he was operated on but the youngest was 2 and half, tubes don't always work though the yongest had to have the op again 18 months ago. I think it must depend on your doctor and local hospital, keep pushing to see a specalist, keep a dairy etc go armed with loads of info when you go to the hospital
