How to get baby on schedule

My 6 month old is so sporadic with his daily routines. No 2 days are ever the same. I try to feed him at the same times every day but his naps are all over the place. We do have the same night time routine and that works well for sleeping at night. I don't know how to get him on a schedule during the day. I've read you should lay him down the same times every day for a nap whether he goes to sleep or not but I have no idea what time that should be. Each day is different. How do you put them on a schedule after 6 months of no schedule?

Is there a reason you *need* him to be on a schedule? Personally I think it's better to follow your son's cues on what he needs during the day, not based on what the clock says he needs. Your son can't tell time :)

With my first son I initially felt there was no rhyme or reason to his routine, but then we started keeping a diary and one did start to emerge. It wasn't super consistent, but it was enough to give us a starting point and from there we were able to establish him in a really good routine.

If you are having trouble with the daytime naps, try and get him outside a bit (for at least half an hour) prior to when you want him to nap, then settle him with a feed when you come back in. (Does wonders for day time sleeps at any age).

Once you do have them in a routine, be prepared for this to change at anytime. At this point you'll have to go through the process of working this out all over again. When my 2nd son was this age I felt like I was going through this process every week and was ready to go insane!

With my first daughter it was the same as you. She would eat, sleep and play at different hours. As soon as she started daycare at 7 months everything went into place and we followed what the daycare schedule was. Is what they did and maybe it will help you.

Breakfast snack and play time all done before 9am, from 9am till 11am nap time, from 11am till 12pm play time ( story time, music time ect ect ) from 12pm till 1pm lunch, from 1pm till 3pm nap, from 3pm till 3:30pm snack from 3:30pm till parents pick up kids play time ( whatever the kid decide to play with )

So when i had my second that's the same schedule i followed and it went well.

Now for the routine of night this works for me. Supper at 5:30- 6pm bath from 6- 6:30pm then a little play time and dodo at 7:30 - 8pm.

Good luck and hope this helps a bit :-)

babies respond really well to routine, my son has had a routine since 3mths old , i just followed what he did naturally and tweeked it in to a routine. after every feed he would sleep so i followed that now hes 5mths old he now skips a sleep so i do more in that awake time with him which tires him out for his next sleep. if you keep a little diary after a few days you might find a routine that could be tweeked.
