Is it possible to get pregnant with the mirena IUD? without an ectopic pregnancy and side effects?

I have had cramping, like a knot in my stomach (as it was with both my kids), headaches, nausea, fatigue, frequent urination (although I hold it in most times), aches, mood swings, food cravings, etc.

This is a bad subject for me. The side effects are terrible. Everything was great in the beginning, but then I got to where I could not walk because the pain was terrible!!! The Mirena IUD did not stay in place and it also caused a tumor the size of a large grapefruit in my uterus. It was so big, you could see the swelling threw my clothes. I had to go threw a surgery to remove the tumor because they could not extract the3 tumor from my uterus. It was beginning to take over one of my tubes as well. I am 36 years old. I was scared because physicians do not talk in simple terms for everyone to understand. And my biopsies came back negative for cancers. THANK GOD!!!! But this form of birth control is not very safe for a woman's health.
Hope everyone has a great day!!

I've had the same experience as Louise. I have had my IUD in since my son was born and had it taken out and replaced after 5 years, which was almost 2 years ago. I haven't had a period for this whole time, and it is glorious! Lately, I have noticed that I have gained a few pounds randomly, am having strange cravings, and am tired and moody. I am going to take a pregnancy test myself as my body has not responded this way in the almost 7 years I've been on it. My sister did get pregnant on the Mirena, so it is definitely possible. Good luck to you and I hope you get the answer you want!!

I had 2 mirena coils before I had my last child. The first was brilliant, 5 years of no periods & very little side effects. Yes I did have times when I had increased appetite & the first few months I had some spotting but other than that it was amazing. When I had the first removed & the second inserted I did seem to have more cramping etc initially but it did settle. Sometimes the body finds it hard to accept a 'foreign body' & that can cause side effects. I ultimately had the second removed after only 1 year as we wanted to try for a baby. Took a year to fall pregnant whereas the others were 1-2months after coming off the pill. I was told it was almost instant but I guess my cycle just didn't want to re-start having had 6 years off. I would just add you can always find negative opinions on the internet for anything if you look hard enough but most things come down to personal choice. People are more likely to seek out somewhere to vent their frustration & annoyance when things don't go right but not so likely to if things are just plain sailing but maybe thats me be cynical. I hope you get the result/answers you need from your doctor, not knowing is hard work & extremely stressful! Good luck x

I looked into Mirena after my third baby, as my doctor strongly recommended it until we decided if we were done having kids. I started googling "Mirena side effects", "Mirena forums" etc. and was shocked at what I found. Of course there are always people that take it with little or no side effects, but there was an alarming amount of ladies that have had MASSIVE side effects, and alot of them have complained of feeling pregnant constantly, weight gain, cravings, etc. Talk to your doctor and get everything checked out seriously, don't wait, you don't want to gamble with these decisions

I would just take a pregnancy test... I had the Paraguard IUD (which is different I know), and had a feeling I was pregnant. After taking at at home test, I went to the doctor. Turns out, the IUD was still in place and I am pregnant. They removed it and everything is looking good, except I noticed it so early that it is still too soon to see a heartbeat, so I will be going back to confirm. Apparently I fall in the .8% that get pregnant while with it! Not to scare you, but it definitely is possible.

Women it sounds like you are alregic to the Mirena or your body does not take it well, get it checked out, cause if your body does not take it well, you can miss periods, have cramping, nausea, moodswings etc. I'm not able to have them for those reasons. You COULD be prego. but make sure you get it checked out

It is possible to get pregnant with any birth control. I have had two birth control babies. Thank God they are perfectly healthy. The first was by pill and the other I had while I was on the depo. shot. Also I had the mirena in and it was causing so many problems for me as far as cramps and constant bleeding. I finally had it removed and now I'm trying the neuvo ring. It is great! No side effects and it releases the lowest amount of hormones compared to any birth control according to my doctor. It really falls down to what do you want to do? You can either try to wait it out and deal with the side effects(thats what I'm trying to do) Or you could go get it removed. If you are planning to get pregnant soon I would go ahead and get it removed and let your body get back to feeling normal. I know so many women who love the Mirena so I am hoping I will too! Good Luck!

I'm confused too. You got a negative pregnancy test and you still think you're pregnant? I would really go see the doctor as some ladies have suggested. It's really highly unlikely you would get pregnant while on mirena, although mirena can give you pregnancy-like symptoms (did for me). Since you want to get it out anyway, sounds like a trip to the doctor would be wise.

Well, anything is possible, however, my understanding is that Mirena releases a hormone that as a back up to the IUD, so getting pregnant, shouldnt be easy perse. I believe the hormone acts in the same way the famous "pill" works.

A knot that high up is probably not related to pregnancy. If you are loosing sleep over it, just go see your doctor!

I have the mirena and what you are describing sounds the exact way I feel. I no longer have periods wich has caused me to get 3 pregnancy tests in the past 7 months since I had it. They were all negative. I keep trying to remind myself that by not having a period my body is made to think I am pregnant (cravings, cramps, mood swings, etc.) I'm sure it can happen but I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone =) It is common side effects. I think Im finally done buying tests..LOL!

I have mirena and I know its possible. I haven't had any problems other than annoyingly long and random periods. I have a co worker whose friend did get pregnant on mirena though. Have you taken the test yet?

it does sound similar to a pregnancy... i had cramping and pain my abdomen and it was caused by an ovarian cyst that can happen with the Mirena, but try the test, and if its negative, give it a couple more days and if you're still feeling that way definately go to the doctors.

it is possible.. i actually got pregnant through unfortunately it was ectopic... it is rare that the pregnancy actually attaches to the uterine wall though because the membrane is thinned by the Mirena. definately go to your doctor about it though if it continues.
