I understand that I get 6 weeks of paid leave and 6 weeks unpaid, but I am also told I can take up to 24 weeks of leave and my job will be protected. I started my leave May 12th and I think I have to be back to work sometime in august or september. But not sure if I can take anymore time off. Anyone has expertise in this matter??

Thank you all for your input! i really appreciate it. I looked over my paperwork and looks like the maximum I can take is 4 months! AHHH so that means I am going back to work sometime next month! I am so sad I am going to miss my little one!

The national FMLA gives your 12 weeks of unpaid time off from your job for any family medical reason, which includes maternity leave. That's in addition to any paid vacation/sick time your company allows. Different companies will have different maternity leave policies, though, so talk to your HR department about what you can do to maximize your time home with your new baby. They may even allow you to use flex-time or come back part time at the beginning. Good luck!

I'm not seeing anything about anything past 12 weeks. Ask your HR manager if there is an extension that can be given. Also, if you had a C-section, you may be able to count the first 12 weeks as disability, then take the next 12 (for a total of 24) as your maternity leave.
