Girls

Nevaeh ("heaven" spelled backward and one of the most divisive names around, according to Wattenberg)

Destiny (people dislike names that confer a virtue onto a child, Wattenberg said -- and many associated this name with exotic dancers)

Madison

Mackenzie

McKenna

Addison (an example of a masculine named turned feminine, which many people dislike, Wattenberg said)

Gertrude (people said this name is "ugly")

Kaitlyn (for its "made-up" spelling)

Makayla

Bertha (author's note: duh!)

Boys

Jayden

Brayden

Aiden

Kaden (these rhyming names struck many as overdone, Wattenberg reported)

Hunter (too much like a last name or "too violent")

Hayden

Bentley (people dislike brand-name names, Wattenberg found, calling them "trashy")

Tristan

Michael (too boring, according to some)

Jackson

I'm surprised to see some of them there -- especially Michael, and Kaitlyn doesn't seem that strangely spelled to me. But some of them, yeah ... "Bentley," really?

Still, if you love a name, it's your baby, and you get to decide. Don't let the haters color your opinion of a name you love ... just know that your child may be among those who hate it too.

What do you think of the baby names on this most hated list? Are your children's names on it? Do you care?

I love Madison! The others not so much......to many kids have those names. I can't stand traditional names, I like to be different. My daughters are Sydney and Alyce Jane. Alyce is named after her great-grandmothers. I liked the meanings too.

Are you happy with what you named your child?

My sons name is Apollo and I love how different it is :). He is named after my father (Apolonio) I did change it a bit and his middle name is Rance after his father.

My middle child is called Felix which means happiness in Latin. Unfortunately when he was a baby he screamed a lot, and a friend commented I should have called him Tristan (sad in Latin). I always thought it would be tough to be called Tristan if you knew it meant sad.

In Australia (or at least around where I live) people are pretty conservative with their baby names. I 'm tired of the very common names like Ella, Sophie, Isabella, Emily (OK they are beautiful names, just overdone). At one point I knew three families with girls called Isabella and Olivia.

I have a friend who's a pediatrician and a very common name lately in the baby ward is "Abcde" pronounced Ab-city, Absidy. Which I think is ridiculous but understand everyone's different. :-)

I love the name Aiden btw. One of my favorites!!

I wanted names that weren't to weird, but not to common either, names people had heard of but not THAT many people had with common middle names. My 2 daughters are Alexandra (Lexi) Marie (names after my grandfather Alex), and Tera Nicole (My mom Teresa). both names became very popular the year my child was born. When Lexi started school there were 2 other girls with the same sounding name (Lexie and Lexy) one of them even had the same last name as her!

My three sons are Lane David (Lane is my sister's maiden name and David is my husbands name), Drew Martin (Drew is named for hubbies grandmother and Martin is my mother's maiden name), and Chase Bryan (My husbands father is Charles Bryan) . Only one I regret is Chase, never name a child a verb! All I do is chase him around everywhere!

My oldest is 17 and she hates that everyone is named for someone else, but I think the tradition is important

We went with Rowan Larkin as the name for our 1st little cutie and Grayson Matthew as the name for our 2nd little cute. Rowan was a name I heard in a movie (The Wickerman) many years before we were even considering having kids. It just stuck with me. The name Grayson we got from a name book. We both liked the sound of it. If we had a girl then her name would have been Larkin. It's a very old family name on my husbands side so we wanted to keep it in the family especially since out of his siblings we were the only ones that had boys. Our sons have 6 girl cousins and then its just them as the 2 boys :) Matthew is my husband middle name so it meant a lot to him to use it.

Nevaeh makes me want to barf. I'm also not a fan of Destiny -- although at least Destiny is better than Destyne (pronounced "Destiny"), which is what a coworker of mine named her daughter. Many of the names on that list I think are seriously overused (Kaitlyn, Hunter, Jayden, Madison, Mackenzie, McKenna...), a couple I actually like (Michael, Tristan), a couple are very old-fashioned (Bertha, Gertrude), but most of them probably wouldn't make my "most hated" list.

It's interesting that the people surveyed dislike surnames used as boys' names and boys' names used as girls' names, since both of these are longstanding historical trends (Fitzwilliam Darcy, anyone? It was VERY COMMON in English-speaking countries for a long time to give a boy his mother's maiden name as a first name, to keep that name in the family). For example, Lindsay -- that's a Scots clan name (they even have their own tartan) that presumably at a certain point became common as a boys' first name via the mechanism above, and then sometime during my childhood made the transition to girls' name territory (I can date it so precisely because I remember in what grade my (boy) classmate Lindsay G. started using his middle name, Michael, instead).

I'm not a big fan of "trendeigh" names -- believe me, you really don't want your kid to be one of 5 kids in his/her class with the same name. (I am a child of the 1970s; throughout my school years I never had less than 1 Jennifer and 1 Jason in my class, and generally there were 2 or more of each. Srsly ppl.) A trend I really think is unfortunate, because I spent almost 2 decades of my life having to spell my last name for people (my birth surname is Italian and has 2 zeds in it), is the thing where parents give their kids a fairly common name but spell it all funny to make it "unique". (Not picking on ethnic or traditional spellings, like Caitlin instead of Kathleen, or on existing variations like Anne/Ann or Ian/Iain; I'm talking about spellings people just make up.) Because all this means is that your kid will go through life saying "No, my name isn't Jennifer, it's Genifrrr. But pronounced like 'Jennifer'." (I'm making that example up, obviously ... but people do actually name their kids things like Mykynzy and Destyne and Zavyaire.)

My DD's name is Shaina. We could have spelled it Shayna or Sheyna or Sheina (it's a Yiddish name, so the real spelling is in a whole 'nother alphabet) and I kind of wish we'd gone with Shayna because this country singer called Shania Twain was apparently very popular when DD was a baby, and people kept calling her Shania, which was irritating ... but totally our own fault :P

I have two sons. Our first son, 2.5 years old is Oscar Jacob. Oscar was my grandpa's name and Jacob was my husband's grandpa. I didn't know a family name was important to me until we had to name a child. Our second son is 9 months old and names Oakley Drew. Oakley was just a fluke. I took out the name book, went to the O's and it was the second name on the list. It wasn't really my intention to have two O names. Drew is short for Andrew, my husband. If he had been a girl, we were going to name her Oaklie Dru. I agree with an ealier post. Kids get judged on too many aspects of their lives they can't control already. Why are their names getting added to the list?

Hi Stacey I love those names! Funny isn't it, how people can be so judgemental about baby names? Especially if they are really quite normal! I guess you would pronounce it Aylyn. It is quite common in Scandinavia, and there are a few people in Holland called Elin now, but it is not very popular anywhere else :-)

My son is called Trystan, I am surprised to see it (well, Tristan) on the list. My husband is Welsh and wanted Welsh names for our children. I am Dutch and we live in the Netherlands, so I wanted names that can be pronounced easily in Dutch. We ended up naming them Elin and Trystan and are still pretty happy with that! I am quite curious why many people would hate the name Tristan. To be honest, I am also a little suprised someone would research which baby names are most hated?

Anyhow, for a boys name that i love, I would have chosen Liam or Caleb. If I had a boy.

I think that a child's name should have meaning to the parents and it doesn't matter what the rest of the world thinks. We named our son Brooks which has elicited extreme reactions in people who either love it or hate it. All that matters to us is that we like it and have a story behind it.

Her middle name comes from her grandma, my mom, who has passed away and who has only seen her from heaven! I stuck to classic names for my two and then gave my kids 2 middle names to be different. My 11 year old girl is Emma Autumn Jai and my 5 year old son is Henry Alan James. Both of their middle names are named after family members that mean a lot to us. :) And now, so funny, their first names are becoming so common which was, me and my husband's problem with ours too growing up (mine is Sarah and his is Ben, lol). So we are now a family of common names, but I have no regrets. Still love their names.

Cydnee loves her name too she's nearly 13.

There's a few of my friends children who's names I really don't like but I tend to keep it to myself so not to offend.

My best friend has just called her baby girl elspyth she knows people won't like it but they do and she gets Ellie for short.
