We know that she is a very smart little girl and does have some understanding of what she is doing and the results it brings, however, children this young are not able to fully comprehend and remember everything consistently. I read What to Expect in the First Year and it does state in there that distraction is a good tool to use at this age because of the above reasons. Since my last post, she is getting better with the hitting and has quit biting because we do consistently tell her no and that it hurts.

As for your child being too young to understand, I feel this is prime time to start with the teachings. Our children no matter what age are intelligent little smarties. They know how to work our hearts as well as our nerves. Start now she will figure out mom and dad mean business, I believe distraction may only give her power. Ignoring the bad behavior, as long as they are in a safe environment, will show them there is no attention given for that kind of behavior. Not a therapist, but am working on similar outburst from young children 6, 5, & 3. Wishing I had started sooner. Good luck and hang in there

My daughter will be 1 on March 10th and for about 2-3 weeks now she has been having temper tantrums! So much for the terrible two's, lol! Mostly she cries and screams when she can't have what she wants or you take something from her. Sometimes she will try to bite or hit you as well. We just keep telling no (to the hitting and biting) and that is hurts. They are just too young at this point to understand really. As for the screaming and crying, we try to distract with something else. Again, she is too young to understand what is happening just yet.

Boy, this brings back memories lol...My daughter did the same thing...She'd throw a fit n the middle of a store if she didnt get what she wanted or just to get attention and would literally throw herself on the floor so hard that i was afraid of her giving herself a concusion...When I discussed it with her dr. he jokingly told me to get her a helmet :-/ ...Of course i did not get my child a helmet but she eventually grew out of it...As long as u dont feed n2 the temper tantrums and explain that til he is calm, he's not gnna get what he wants...(of course it depends on his age, My daughter was old enough to understand)...God bless
