Wanda- I am a speech therapist. The above post that says children do not need speech at 3 years old is incorrect. If your daycare is concerned, an evaluation would not hurt. Most states have free programs for children before they enter school. Pediatricians, while their intentions are good often downplay speech disorders and say that "it will get better on it's own"- this is typically not the case if there actually is a disorder. Therapy is usually very effective and early intervention is always key. All children do develop differently and there may be no need for treatment but an eval by a certified Speech Pathoologist can give you advice on what your child needs.

I know exactly how you feel--my son is 3 and started talking very late. I thought he was just a late bloomer until I could understand my 1 & 1/2 yr old better than my 3 yr old :) I got him evaluated for speech therapy, he goes once a week and I cant believe how great it has been for him. They have been very good with making fun games to help with their communication skills.
Good luck

My daughter is 4 and a half and still doesn't speak well. I am not worried anymore though, she went to a development check up 6 months ago and they thought it was ok.
Some children take their time, mine certainly does. And I let her. I think it's better to let her relax and progress at her own pace.

I think all kids hit mild stones at differant ages . My sons both have had speech issues . I have had both of them tested for speech and my older child took speech & he speaks very clear now . you can have your child test for speech by the local school system . call an elementary school and get the number for early child hood, call them and tell them that your child needs to be test for speech . it is free and it will let you know if he needs speech assistance or not . My pedtrician told me that speeech impairment cna be hereditary . My husband took speech and both of our boys need it too . my 3 year old will start his speech classes son . good luck I hope this helps you.

My son has the same problem I took him to bacharach for a speech evaluation and he really talks good now. I think I was use to his speech I could understand him but others had a problem. Now he goes to stockton state college and has speech therapy once a week

my son is 5 and is in speech therapy, you can always get him tested for it, but i don't believe a day care can tell you that he needs it only suggest you get him tested. My son does need it but is a fast talker too.

Hello Wanda,

just spend time talking to him with regular talk no baby talk and read to him. Use books or cards to help him say different words. Not all children learn as fast as others. I personally think that he is too young for speech therapy. My daughter started speech therapy in 2nd grade and had some learning delay due to short term memory problems but she is 18 now with great grades in school and she has two jobs...she is amazing!!! give your son some time to develop, time is all it takes with some word games. best of luck to you.
