I am working out and I need an extra source of Protein that is fat free and low in carbs. Does anyone use protien shakes while breastfeeding? I saw a site that says it is for nursing moms, but just scared to try it without knowing very much. The site was afterbaby.com. I would greatly appriciate any advice!

I use Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard 100% Natural Chocolate Whey powder. I like that it doesn't use artificial sweeteners (I'm super paranoid about that sort of stuff especially since I'm breastfeeding) and is still tastes pretty good! You can find it on www.bodybuilding.com's "store"

I was amazed when I brought my son to Max Muscle because he wanted to bulk up at 16! Not only was the guy we spoke with knowledgeable, but he also happened to be a nutritionist, and was straightforward with us regarding my son's needs. He simply told my son what he had to take to cater to his needs at his age the natural way. You can try a Max Muscle near you, and just ask. We weren't pushed to buy anything.

I used the Atkin protein shakes when I was pregnant and breast feeding. My doctor said those were fine to use. I am a vegetarian who needs a boost of protein every once in a while :).

Really Elisabeth did your doctor said that? Because I have been on it for two weeks already and I feel good and lost some weight, however my friend who saw me drinking and eating the Atkins shake and bar, told me that those were danger and toxic for my one year old baby. Since i am still breastfeeding I don't want to put my daughter in any danger but I want to loose weight since I have been gaining weight after I lost the pregnancy weight. Any information on this topic will be grately appreciated

I use a protein shake that uses only organic ingredients and it is safe to take while nursing. I used it while nursing my second child. It is called Isalean Shake by Isagenix. Check it out here http://karstin.isagenix.com/us/en/isalea... . I love this stuff! It makes me feel great. There is a chocolate flavor that taste like a frosty and a vanilla flavor that I add fruit to that gives it a smoothie taste.

I use Optimum Nutrition whey protein powder as well, and have been for many years. It is good stuff. I have been nursing for 15 months now. I really like the Rocky Road flavor

Lots of nuts and grains have protein. Remember that with carbs, you can subtract the fiber - so high fiber sources of protein are excellent. I usually try to sneak nuts into as many of my foods as possible. - from almond crusts for chicken to fruit, yoghurt, and nut snacks. I usually have either granola, eggs, or oatmeal for breakfast. Eve was right - fattty acids are important to brain development. Salmon and flax seeds are two great sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. Ground flax seeds can be added to home made smoothies. Just add a handful of berries, a banana, a glass of milk, a half cup of low fat frozen yogurt and a few tablespoons of flax for a high protein healthy smoothie.

Try lean meat, turkey and chicken. They're natural source of protein and good for you and the baby. Remember, whatever you eat, your baby eats too, since you're breastfeeding. You can also try EAS Lite Myoplex and Soy Protein.

I would not cut out any fat while you are breastfeeding. Babies need the fat to support brain function and growth.
