His nose is so congested!

Dylan has had congestion since he was born, although now at 7 weeks, it's from a cold (I believe.) Today he started crying, and a little bit of boogie came out, so i swiped at it with a tissue, and you should have seen the size of the booger that came out! OMG I don't even think I've had one that big in a long time! And then right after that, another. I try using the nasal aspirator but nothing ever comes out. Is there a secret to using that thing? Or is there anything else I can do? I can hear him breathing from the other room! Also, it sounds like it's up in there, not close to the opening of his nose. Please help!

Angela, on any humidifier there should be a filter which you can remove and wash, the filter is the part that can get moldy and spread germs...I don't think you have to clean it incredibly often, but if your humidifier is ever sitting for an extended amount of time with water in it and it's not on, that's when bacteria will breed...I did a little google research for you...http://www.doityourself.com/stry/cleanup... apparently they recommend WAY more than I've been doing :) AND filters can be replaced...hmm

Thank you!!!

Yeah, our humidifiers both say to clean them every day. Yeah right! I'm lucky if I clean them every week!

how are you cleaning your humidifiers? The best I can do is soap and water for the top part and lysol wipes for the base as best as i can reach cause it doesn't fully come apart. do you have a trick?

Some humidifiers come apart and can be washed in the dishwasher.  We used a filterless model for a bit but it started to smell like feet (I wish I was kidding).  Now we use a humidifier with replaceable filters.  You can also try adding one of these doo-dads to the tank.  I think they will work with any model.

Humidifiers are a must in the winter here. I also like to boil a big pot of water on the stove ; I put cinnamin, allspice, cloves and sliced lemon in the water. It puts moisture in the air and smells yummy at the same time!

you might want to invest in a few humidifiers also..its very common for winter babies to be congested the whole time b/c of the dry air...Aubrey's been like that since birth as well. We do saline drops and I plug her with the nasal aspirator, but humid air is the most important thing. Put one in whatever room the baby sleeps in and another one downstairs in the room baby spends the most time in...you just need to be careful to clean the humidifier often so it doesn't get moldy and spread mold around your house :)

I use the nasal aspirator and sometimes I have to do it a few times for stuff to come out. Nicolas hates it!

Awwww. I'm sorry for the stuffy nosed baby.

We use saline and a long cotton swab (another suggestion from the Good Dr Foor - snicker). Is it wrong that I'm yearning for the day when my son can pick his own nose?

I'm right there with ya! We've been picking Liam's bogies since about week 3. His don't stuff him up too bad, so we just pick 'em when we see them. The aspirator never seems to do much good for us unless it's to the point where he can't breathe.

When I suction, I plug the other nostril as I squeegee,,,Wes hates it, so I don't use it often. He gets congested, but, mostly, as a result of spitting up while laying down.

The trick is (and its gonna be awful when ya do it) push in at the bottom and release all at once. Try doing saline drops before hand though or sitting in a steamy bathroom with the hot water going. Don't freak if ya ever see small traces of blood. Its normal and just means a few blood vessels were broken. It happens all the time.

Liv sometimes gets hard boogies stuck up there so i use a drop of saline in each nostril and then suck em out. You just squeeze the aspirator before you put it in their nose then let go. You can do it just after bath time too. I would try not to do too much sucking though b/c too many suctions and it can inflame their little noses making the problem worse.
