Hello everyone- I have been doing yoga on and off for years. I have pain in my wrists and it is getting nearly impossible to practice yoga. I'm not sure what causes the pain, but yoga definitley makes it worse. Any suggestions?

Yes it was the change in use for my wrists that did it for me too, and reverse prayer in Parsvottanasana is very painful now and my left wrists clicks. This was due to breastfeeding, even though I changed sides each time I fed. Went to the doctors who advised me that it is a compression issue in the wrist and try to avoid certain things that exacerbate it, which is hard in life and in my yoga class it clicks almost every time I do an alighment issue with people. But I keep it supple and pain free most of the time by wrist rotations, variations on adho Mukha Svanasana as Stacey has suggested and even having less pressure by doing it on the knees instead. Modifications holding wrists not palms, bbut also strengtheing postures too, Purvottansana to help strengthen, and various arm balances but with blocks to heold on too as well can help.

Add a little Tai Chi to your workout. There are moves to improve blood flow to your wrists and fingers.

I have had pain in my wrists since my son was born. I paid a lot of attention to it as a friend of mine ended up getting an operation. I realized that a lot of what was happening was that the child care made me do things with my wrists tat I did not do previously. In diapering for example when I lift his feet my wrists were over stretched. Also holding his head in the correct position while breast feeding (I think this was where it all began) became very painful and I ended up getting a brace to help. Now it comes back every once in a while, but I have noticed it is when I am not being conscious of carrying weight limp-wristed. I find it interesting that I have heard many new moms have wrist problems, but I have never seen it as a particular warning anywhere.

I had that problem after giving birth to my son so I started taking calcium and I'm fine now.

Hi Jaime, I have been teaching yoga for several years now and usually when students complain about pain in the wrists it due to too much weight in the wrists in Down Dog and other posed where a lot of weight is coming into the hands. Try spreading your weight through out the palms and all of your fingers to relieve some pressure from the wrists. Press firmly into the mound of your thumbs and index fingers. This is why a wedge is helpful, it take the weight our of the wrists and distributes it through out the hands. If its still too painful stay off of your wrists for a while and try Dolphin pose instead of Down dog just come down to your fore arms. Good luck!

Use props! A roled up blanket as a small arch under your rist or even a wedge! I have seen people use door molding wedges.
