Suggestions for Prenatal Yoga

Hi! My name is Lizzy and I've wanted to get into yoga for some time now. I'm looking for a relaxing and gentle way to stay in shape and flexible. However, I can't afford classes or videos right now. So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on poses or routines for when someone is pregnant. Or if they could be modified for pregnancy. :) Thanks so much!

i practiced yoga during my pregnancies. i did it from a book. Janet Balaskas has a good one and also "Yoga and meditation for Pregnancy and Birth" is great too.

I had never tried yoga until I got pregnant.  Everyone recommended I try it since I was so used to going to the gym and could no longer do that.  I enrolled in classes but there are many prenatal yoga videos out there and I am also told that if you have any of the on-demand services through cable, you may be able to find some sort of prenatal yoga work out there as well. I used a video called "Prenatal Yoga with Shiva Rea" (from Gaiam) which I would definitely recommend for a beginner. I do a lot of yoga (and did before I was pregnant and it was too basic and gentle for what I needed.) I think it would be excellent based on what you described about yourself...if you could find it at the library. If not, I would actually be happy to send you mine since I have no need for it.

Check out your local council, I live on the Gold Coast (Aus) and the council subsidises ante-natal yoga so it only costs me $3 a week. It's a beautiful way to connect with your baby as well as prepare your body for labour.

I would suggest looking for videos at your local library or downloading some of the internet, maybe using bittorrent.

You have to be really careful with yoga when you're pregnant. There is a hormone released during pregnancy, called relaxin, which causes us to be more flexible than normal. This could mean you get hurt if not careful. The genral rule of thumb with pregnancy is that you can continue any exercise you were doing before, but should not start new routines. If you are not deterred from trying prenatal yoga, rent a really good video on prenatal yoga from the library and be very careful. BTW, I'm a certified personal trainer.
