10 months and still breast feeding!!! How can i get him of the breast??? please help!!!

I have the same problem, my boy is 10 months old and I still cant get him onto a bottle and have to breastfeed him to sleep ....but I feed him 3 jar of baby food and I am not sure if he is drinking enough milk from me because I dont know how many oz plz help me...any advice to get him onto bottles and i had tried all kind of nipple....

My daughter is 8 months and since she was born I tried pumping and giving it to her in various bottles and she aboslutely refused each one, even if someone else was feeding her. Therefore, I've never been able to leave her with anyone at all. I completely understand! She was also on night feeds up until 2 weeks ago when I started sleep training with her. I bought this book "The Sleepeasy Solution: The Exhausted Parent's Guide from Birth to Age 5" and it was AMAZING! It taught me how to wean the night feeds and get her to sleep through the night in her own crib. The first few nights were crucial and hard but then it gets much easier after those! Many moms have told me on here that it's too late for a bottle, and to try a sippy cup. I bought the Nuby brand that has a top on it like a bottle and so far she just wants to chew on it and spits out water if I put it in there. But, if I put my breastmilk in there she does a little better. I feel a lot better now that I'm getting a good night's sleep so I would take that as the first step, then you will have the energy and/or patience to work on the sippy cup. My daughter scratches and pinches me constantly while feeding as well! So, I am determined to get her on this cup. Babies don't like change, just like us, but sooner or later they have to learn and at first it's really difficult but they learn quickly.

There is no advice on how to stop. I breastfed my daughter and tried to give a bottle at a month old. It didnt work. I tried every bottle, nipple and even found a bottle that looked like a breast. didnt work. I couldnt leave her with anyone. Finally when she was 2 1/2 years I had to get my gallbladder out and she went to the Dr. with me and he said i had to stop for the surgery. I told her my Dr. said no more and she stopped. It was great to bond with her like that but she till this day wont let anyone do anything for her. Its only mommy. She will be four in may. I have a 7 year old and a new baby due in April. Its hard but it will get better.

If he bites take him off the breast, if he scratches and hits take him off the breast, it wont take him long to figure out that he has to be nice when he's nursing or it goes away. I''m a pretty crunchy mama so for me 10 months is too young to wean, but you need to do what you feel comfortable with, just remember if you do keep nursing he will start to slow down after a year, by the time he's 12 months you will most likely be able to go down to 3 or 4 nursing sessions a day and once he starts walking around you can do the don't offer don't deny approach to gradually wean which will be easier for you and baby. Both of my kids weaned them selves at 15 and 17 months with no drama, no pain and no fighting so if you can hold on for a little longer you might be able to get him to self wean without a struggle. Noah is getting to the stage were he bites, hits and scratches while feeding. He realy is too BIG too feed. Im very impressed that iv fed him for as long as i have considering i wasnt to sure about breast feeding in the first place. Iv given up with formula as iv tried many types and brands and he dosnt want a bar of it!!! he does take a sippy cup problem im having atm is the seal broke on it and it leacks! i cant find the same brand of cup anywere!!! iv bought five different cups and he wont take them!!! suck a bugger!!!...ill just keep persisting i thinkas tiaring as it all can be :) As for cows milk i mite try him soon SLOWLY but knowing noah im sure he wont like it ither! thanks everyone for your help and advice. Much apreshiated!!! :)

try puting a bottle nipple on your nipple when you breast feed and get your son used to the rubber feeling and slowly get him off.. try mixing the both first bottle than nipple...

I know how you feel, but like others have said, don't feel guilty for wanting to stop. My son, Isaak did not stop breastfeeding until he was 1 week away from 1 year old. I was gettin to the point of where the feedings were getting to be too much. He was biting and feeding him just wasn't my favorite time of day. He was drinking from a cup and eating regular food but would not give up with breastfeeding at night. Then one great night, he just decided he was ready to "quit". I personally think that breastfeeding is kind of like potty training. When your baby is ready to be weaned off the breast, he/she will stop and start taking the bottle/cup. Don't give up and keep trying different cups and giving them a cup during meals. Eventually he/she will get the point that a cup is a device that gives out liquids and is semi-similar to the breast.

i have heard that having someone else feed them at the crucial times like bedtime, because they associate you with food. i don't know if it actually works or not because i couldn't breastfeed. just a thought

I decided to ween my second son at 6 months. After being pregnant or breast feeding for about three years strait, I wanted my body back! It took a little while to get him used to the bottle. He seemed to hate formula, and I didn't blame him because it smelled terrible! I then decided to try organic formula. It was a little more expensive, but he seemed to like it better. Then after about a month or so, I switched to regular formula, and he took it.

Yes its true that whole milk is not generally recommended until they are a year. But "a year"is more of a rough estimate as to when babies are able to digest it, not an exact time. 10 months is close enough to a year that she could probably try introducing it in small amounts and it would be ok.

I went threw the same thing...my son only wanted my breast wich makes it hard to leave or have him sleep over at his grandmothers house. Any how when he was about 7 mths i decided that he didnt need the breast at nite that it was just a comfort so i cut him off and rocked him instead it took alot of nites awake to do this and he wasnt happy with it but after a week and sum he was done and also mostly sleep threw the nite wich he had never done before. Now he is 13 mths and takes a bottle i re intreduced it and finaly he decided to take it at about 9 mths but before then i would feed him once in the morning and once at nite and suplement with sippy cups of formula. good luck!!

I'm going through the same thing you are!! Mine is 9months and I've started weaning him. I was told to do one feeding at a time. Figure out which would be easiest (mine was lunch) and do that one for a couple of weeks. Just work with him on a sippy cup throughout the day. Then after a week or so take away another feeding. Eventually you will have to do tough love and say "if you want something to drink you will drink from the cup". Then in a couple of years you will have to do it again to get him off the sippy cup.

First of all, don't feel guilty about wanting to stop breastfeeding. You've given him a great gift so far, and since you'll want to wean him gradually its totally fine to start now. Its totally your decision. Formula isn't poison, and you should check with his doc for sure about whole milk but at 10 months his digestive system will probably be fine if you start introducing it in small amounts. As for refusing to take a bottle, thats a little more tough. Have you tried giving him a sippy cup? You could try that with meals, with a little breastmilk or formula to start with. He'll come around to it eventually, don't worry! Maybe make a big show of drinking out of a cup and let him watch you; a lot of times they will want to try something when they see you doing it.

I'm still nursing my 8 month old but have started supplementing a bit with formula and replacing one or two nursing sessions with a bottle to get him gradually started on weaning. I have the same issue with night nursing though- he still wakes up once per night and its become such a habit for us, its so hard to get him to go back to sleep without nursing him. He fights and cries, whereas if I nurse him he's back to sleep within 5 minutes. I've put off trying to wean him from that because its so much easier, but I know I'll have to do it at some point. I fear it will be the hardest part for us and I'm not looking forward to it!

10 months is definatly not too big to breast feed!! if thats the only reason you want to give up then dont! i breast feed until my son was 22 months, and am really glad that i did. it gives them a fantastic nutirient boost and is also wonderful for their immune system. formula should be a last resort for thoes unfortunate woman that cant breastfeed until thier child is old enough to be fully on solids, i would strongly reccomend that you avoid giving you child formula, because its a cows milked based thing that a lot of babys cant tolerate all that well, which means they dont get all the nutrients from it, and they dont get any immune boost whatsoever (in fact it supresses the immune system in most kids and makes them more prone to sniffly noses, colds, eczema, asthma etc etc)

I felt no one supported me when trying to stop breast feeding, midwives etc where all on hand to encourage it but there was no advice on how to stop !! Personally my daughter never took to any cups or bottles I spent a fortune on different expensive bottles and cups on advice from other mums and midwife. I found a fantastic simple bottle to cup trainer from boots that had a wide nipple on it I started my dd on aptamil from 11 months and fed her thru this bottle. She was unsure for the 1 st day but started to take the full 7 oz's with a day!! Hope this helps xx

I wouldn't recommend soda to your child, or too much juice for that matter. Try milk for the day and just breastfeed at night before bed time. maybe pump a 4 oz bottle of breast milk, then give him 4 oz of 2% to just get him comfortable. Hope this helps :)

My son refused to take a bottle after exclusively nursing for 6 months and then adding baby foods. At 11 months, my milk started to dry up so we had to force the issue with William. Just for the first few bottles, give him some completely flat 7-up or other pleasant flavored drink in a bottle and let him go thirsty. Every time he wants to nurse give him the bottle. It took a 45 minutes crying session, but William finally took the bottle and after a few days, that's all he wanted. He's solely on the bottle and only drinking whole milk, water and juice now... I kinda went through the same thing...I was weak though. I ended up breastfeeding my little boy until he was 2 years old. Finally he got to the point where I could reason with him. I told him my mum mum mum's (his words for it lol) hurt really bad and mommy had to put a bandaid on them. I had my husband wrap me fairly tight with an ace bandage. He didn't bother me for mum mum mum any more after that.

My doc made me start giving my son (who is now 16 months) 2% milk at 8 months. He did great! He wanted the bottle when he was tired, so I would let him have one while I rocked him to sleep, but he did great without the breast milk. We did sippy cups and he is drinking out of regular cups without spilling now. Hope this helps.

I breastfeed my oldest now 3 until he was 10 month i only quit when because he had the 4 front teeth and my doctor told me it was ok to give whole milk. Try a sippy cup instead of a bottle and ask your doctor for advice. They sometimes have some good advice sometime not so much . but good luck either way.
