Your child won't notice or remember the party, so plan it primarily for the adults that will be attending. We had a BBQ for the adults and two cakes, one smaller one for the birthday child to destroy (and to take the obligatory embarrassing pictures of) and one for the grown ups. I didn't really choose a theme, just some bright balloons and a Happy Birthday flag that we have flown every year since then. It really isn't until age 3 that kids start to have opinions about themes.
