My 20 month old has been in a toddler bed for about a month now. I have been having a lot of people tell me that he is just to young to be out of the crib. We took him out of the crib when we found him with one leg over the side of the crib. Do you think we are wrong?? What age or time do you think is a good age?

I believe 18 mos. is a good age for a toddler bed. as long as it is close to the ground and they cant hurt themselves.do what is best for your son, you know him the best and you tend him daily. other people have their own opinions, but what really counts is what you think. if he was already learning how to climb out of the crib then i think you did the right thing by gettting a toddler bed, cuz he could of really gotten hurt if he fell out of it. you are never wrong in making a decision for your child, you do your best to take care of them on a daily basis and you know what is best for them.

my son was in a toddler bed about a week after his first birthday. we had another baby on the way and didnt feel it necessary to buy 2 cribs. he has done great! he actually did better at 12 months than he is doing now at 22 months. : ) but as long as he is sleeping good...there is no problems!!!

We found our son balancing on the rail about to plunge head first to the floor. We have a convertable crib so the side came off and now it's a toddler bed. Oh yeah, he just turned 1 last month. There is no right or wrong age. If your baby can pull himself up and get over the rail, the sudden stop at the end of the fall and seriously hurt him. And if he were to land just right, he could break his neck. You made the right choice in putting him in a toddler bed. All of my children were out of their cribs by about 1 too.

Well i'd take him out too. I'd much rather him fall out of a toddler bed then a crib, thats pretty high. I had my son in a toddler bed around the same age. I think he was about 18 months and he did very well.

I think you made the right decision, its certainly what I would have been doing in that situation.

Your son is going hurt himself more from climbing and then falling from his cot then he is a low lying toddler bed.

My daughters cot converts to a toddler bed and I intend to take the sides off the second she even looks twice at those bars !!!

Perhaps those ppl who told you it was wrong would change their minds if you asked them to pay for your son's medical care if he fell and got hurt.

I don't think you are wrong. My son has been in his toddler bed since he turned 2 (that's when he started trying to get out of his crib) I felt safer with him in a toddler bed than in the crib at that point. I didn't have to worry about him falling and getting hurt trying to get out of the crib.

All my kids began sleeping in a toddler bed around the same time as yours. I think it should be based on each individual child instead of limiting it to an age.Do what works for your family.

I started putting my lil girl in her todler bed when she was a year & a half.... I think that once they are able to walk around steadily by themselves... they are ready just put a baby gate infron of the door just in case they can open it you dont have to worry about them getting up and into everything while your sleeping.

I think what you did was the best idea for your son...I don't remember the age I put my oldest in a toddler bed..I do know that as soon as she could get herself out of the crib we switched over..Its for the safety of them..If you keep him in a crib and he feel and broke an arm or leg you would be very upset. Its for the safety of you and your son. Remember everyone has an opinion, but its up to you as the mommy to do whats best for your son...I believe you did the best for his safety.

I haven't read any of the other replies, so if I repeat someone..."great minds think alike" I guess.
A lot of people have opinions about how other people should or shouldn't parent. My mom always said that the time to move a baby out of the crib is when the child is able to climb out. I agree, because its based less on age and more on ability and development. If your child was attempting to climb out, then you made the right choice.
Don't let anyone give you grief over it.

I put my son in a toddler bed at about 15 months old. He was able to walk without falling all over the place and climbing out of the crib would've been the next step. He just turned 3 and he's been in a normal twin bed for about 6 months now. Like I'm sure some of the others have said, you know what's best for your kid. If you think they're ready for a toddler bed then it doesn't matter what others say. Do the people telling you he's too young to be out of a crib even have kids themselves?

I believe we put our oldest son in a toddler bed at 15months old because he didn't want to be in his crib and also we needed the crib for his baby brother. Then I believe we did the same for our youngest and the reason for that is because my oldest was climbing in the crib on top of his brother.

I dont think there is any certain age when you should start using a toddler bed. I think it just depends on the circumstances. If your child is in danger of hurting themselves because of trying to climb out of the crib then it is probably best to use a toddler bed but if your child is still just fine in a crib then I think you can hold off a little longer. So since you say your child was trying to get out of the crib then I think you made the right decision. :)

I think you know whats best here, I acctually read an article in parents mag that said that if you find your baby like that they need to be ready cuz that can be dangerous for them in itself. I think you know whats best, my son is really small so he doesn't need to leave his crib yet and he's 20 months, but we have another baby coming so I don't want to make a huge change anyway :)) I hope you stick to your guns and tell everyone else thank you for their advice but you are the only one who can raise your lil guy the way you want ;))

Our son was around 19-20 months when we put him into a full sized bed. Just make sure you have the safety rail up so he can not fall out. I think you were absolutley right for putting him into a toddler bed. the crib becomes dangerous once they figure out how to jump out of it.
