My name is Christine and I have a 1 month old, and when I was breastfeeding at first he was latching on with no problem and still does, but in the evenings he latches on and feeds but then latches right off and tries to go back on but doesn't and he starts crying and fussing. And I know that he is hungry but he doesn't want to go back on, so we have to feed him the bottle. And at nights and during the day he latches on no problem, Does anyone know why he is doing this and is there something that I can do??

I swear by Gripe water for gassy babies. Fabulous!!! Your bodies natural response to a baby crying is to release milk. He might just want to nurse right then and get upset that there is no instant reward. I would allow him to cry and and continue to try and nurse him. My daughter learned to play with my breast ( I know that sounds completely gross) before she would latch on.. Good luck, don't get discouraged

Yeah, I switch him from breast to breast and if he still doesnt latch on then I just get his pacifier and i walk with him and he falls asleep, so i;m thinking that he is getting enough and if he wasnt then I would think he wouldn't fall asleep, he would just keep crying.

Yeah, Like during the day he feeds no problem, its just when it hits around the evening time he gets fussy.

My son does the same thing and he's 2 months old. I would try switching sides until he latched on. Sometimes that worked. Also sometimes he just needed to be burped. But when none of that worked i gave him a pacifier. Sometimes babies just need something to suck for comfort. Keep up the good work!

Possibly not latching on because he's gassy. I had the same problem. My son was hungry and looked like he wanted to feed but couldn't because of stomach pains. I took him to an osteopath and he improved 100%. Good luck!

Where are you feeding baby? My son gets overworked in the evenings, and although I usually feed him in his room anyway, if I don't do it in the evening he won't concentrate on feeding. Try picking a quiet spot, like your baby's room, to do evening feedings in, and keep the lights low (helps my son mellow out a lot). If your baby's tired as well as hungry, that could be contributing to the fussiness.

It may be because after you have been breastfeeding for a while the nipple starts to wrinkle kind of like in the bath tub. You can try a nipple/breast shield that you can get at Target. it goes over the nipple and act sort of like a nipple on the bottle. That way he will be able to get breast milk and won't have such a hard time latching on. Going back and forth like that from breast to bottle can sometimes upset their tummies.

Evenings are notorious for being fussy baby time. There were times when my husband would have to walk around with my daughter to get her calm enough to latch. You could try pumping just enough to stimulate a letdown so as soon as you latch baby he gets milk. I used cluster feeding to help get through these fussy evenings. See this link for more info

My little girl went through a tiny stage of that, and persistence paid off. I know it's heartbreaking to do,...but gently hold his head at your breast and let him cry for a little bit. If he's hungry he will latch back on. Others told me to try to squirt some in her mouth,...but I never had to do that. Hopefully this helps.

Thank you, I will try the rocking him when I breastfeed him. I know that it does get frustrating, I don't like giving him the bottle because I'm afraid that he isnt going to take from my breast but he needs to eat. I know he is getting big and I wish that he would just stay small, my lil guy is my lil snuggle bug.

my lil guy did that as well i have actually know idea why he did that infact it was kinda frustrating at times cause he never took a bottle so i was left struggling with him fussy at the breast but i think he was about 2months old and he just stopped doing it also i remember rocking him while breast feeding and that seemed to help him.he is now 6 and half months and a very happy loving baby i miss him being tiny but 5months on is such a joy with him so full of life and he keeps reaching out for me now so cute!!!
