so i gave birth 2 weeks ago to a beautiful little girl.
i'm pumping for her and not using formula and was wondering how it works if i decide to have a beer with dinner or at family bbq.
on some sites i saw it said an alcohalic beverage with low alcohal content is fine as long as you dont pump right after or when you feel drunk...
can anyone give me some more insight??

I asked my doctor about this and she said to pump and dump for 24 hours. I thought that was too much work so I just have not had a drink in a while. I think you should look into those strips that Katie was talking about though. I have a personal question, are you just pumping for your daughter or also breast feeding?

why not build up a frozen supply, its safe. if you are planning to have a couple of bevs pump out extra and freeze it leading up to the event. then pump and dump the next day.

Pump before you drink...as much as possible to make sure you will have enough milk for the baby while the alcohol is in your system. It will take UP TO 3 hours for a 12 ounce beer to completely leave your system...after this time, you will be fine to pump again. If you pump too soon, and there is alcohol in your milk, it will more than likely make your child very sleepy.

If you are really worried they have these little tests strips at walgreens you can buy that test the alcohol content in your breast milk to see if its safe for baby. I seen them in a magazine havn't ever bought any though. but maybe you could try them just to be safe.

You'll be fine. The alcohol clears your breastmilk just as it clears your blood, so no need to pump and dump, just wait an hour or so after you have a drink. You may also want to check out kellymom.com - it is a great resources for breastfeeding questions:

What I've read is that you should pump or feed your baby before drinking and then wait a few hours for the alcohol to leave your system. I wouldn't have more than one drink because the more you drink, the longer it will take your body to get rid of all the alcohol.

I think having one beer and waiting a few hours to pump would be fine.
