Hi all,after reading the other mum's problems with the mirena coili thought i'd post what has happened to me. Im now on my 4th Mirena coil this was put in 6 months ago,now ive never had a problem with the previous ones my periods stopped completely and and no side effects.so the time came for my coil to be changed 6 months ago all was ok till i got my 1st period in years which was exactly how another lady explained the pain so bad that you'd collapse to the floor it was heavy and it lasted over a week then i'd only go so many days and come on again i went 5 months like this and saw a different female doctor she checked it said it was ok but sent me for a vaginal ultra sound scan to check i'd no cysts on my ovaries so after a month of worrying thinking it may be something seriously wrong,i had my scan and the lovely lady that did it showed me the screen she pointed out that i had nothing wrong except my coil was in the wrong place and all the pain and periods was due to it not working and i could of got pregnant which i certainly didnt want as my son is 19 this year.so i went back last friday a week after the scan had the coil removed and a new one put in so finger's crossed this one is were it should be.hope this helps you i wouldnt want anyone to go through this pain.

Caution this may be a lttle TMI but ..... I got mirena at age 20, had it for almost 4 years before any unusual things.. Then December 2011 started feeling bloated and cramping all the time.. By February there was occasional pain. March I got extremely dizzy and nauseaus, thought it was virtego, pregnancy, inner ear infections and it was NONE of the above. I got blood testes and all sorts of other tests.. Late March my husband got a promotion and we decided it was time to start for baby #2 so I go to the Dr and what shouldve been a very easy removal turned into a nightmare! She was up inside me for 30 minutes and couldn't get it, so she set me up for an ultrasound a week later... Again inside trying to remove 30 minutes (EXTREMELY uncomfortable/painful both times)... When that didnt work I had to schedule outpaitient surgery.. She had to go in with a small camera and SURGICALLY remove my mirena... Apparently my uterin wall was growing around it! About a week later everything stopped. No dizzyness, no nausea, no cramping, no bloating, my husband says I'm less moody, AND I lost the last 10 pounds or pregnancy weight I'd been trying to loose for 4 years! Get it out and find something else!

I had a Mirena for 6 years. Although my doctor warned me there was a minimal chance of risk (including Pelvic Inflammatory Disease), I decided to get it anyway when I was 16. I started having severe pains when I was 20 and was told that I had gotten Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. The doctor said taking it out wouldn't make any difference so I kept it in. I got it out 2 years later after finding out that there was major damage to all my reproductive organs especially my tubes. I know many people who swear by this product but if you're having any pain with it then get it out! I was lucky enough to conceive my little miracle because my tubes are so full of scar tissue that the chances of my conceiving are extremely unlikely.

I had the mirena for almost 3 years and i started having problems in june with the same problems and my doctor said that sometimes this happens and now i am 17 weeks pregnant because it was a defect with the mirena so make sure you have it checked.

Rena Stephens- after having mine removed I had a girl, it took a while cause I had a couple of negative papsmears nd then had to get a lets procedure. Good luck

To the person who posted that she could not find her strings, and anyone else who has an IUD but did not know this: Checking you strings is reccomended at least once a month. If at any point you cannot find your strings, you should schedule an appointment with your GYN, Midwife, or NP to check for placement. While waiting to have this checked, you need to use a back up method, I.E. condoms to prevent pregnancy. If you can't feel the strings it cannot be guaranteed that you have the IUD in place.

I had that problem and after 4 monthes of the doctors telling me everything was fine i found out i was 6 weeks pregnant and now they can not find my iud mine was in almost 3 years. so i would have it removed and a new one put in.

Chelsea, the mirena has NOT been recalled. Everything has side effects now days. I had the mirena for 5 years and just recently had my first one removed and another put in. I have had mild side effects. But I think everybody's body responds differently. Get the facts straight before you start mass chaos

mine vanished for 6 months they even did an internal ultrasound and found nothing the dam thing just migrated came out on my husband's penis during sex scared the hell out of him took 3 years to get pregnant after that but i also started depo after the mirena vanished so 2 years after depo i am now 32 weeks prego

I never had a bleeding issue with Mirena but I definitely had a fair share of issues! I was on it for about 4 years. I was trying to wait to have it removed at the five year mark but just couldn't do it. My emotions were all over the place! I was severely depressed and never felt so horrible. My hair was falling out and the cramps were like contractions. Also I broke out horribly with acne and nothing helped. At first it was great but now I'm so glad to feel like myself again!!!!

Mirena has been recalled.. You should have it removed immediately. Regardless of how your symptoms improve. It does affect everyone differently but if you are already experiencing difficulty this soon you should consider all other options

you need to go to ob/gyn. I had the same problem and found out that it had shifted into my uterine wall. It had caused a tear. You may have to get it out and try something different for awhile. On a positive note you can get another one in and it should be great.

I've had mirena in for almost 5 years. It's actually supposed go come out in July. I have never had any problems with it. I had it put in because i didn't want anymore kids after i had my two boys and in my opinion the mirena has been great.

@Carrissa, some depression has been reported. If you are still feeling depressed, see another provider. You should not feel empty and worthless! Seek out another provider to get you whatever help you need to feel better.

I got my Mirena out in December. I still had some moodiness afterwards, but now everything feels back to normal. I just don't think I can tolerate the hormones even in small localized doses. I have the paraguard again (had it for 11 years before) and having no problems. Listen to your body; you know it better than your doctor.

I had issues with it. I went to the Dr. to get it checked out. They said, "Oh no, the Mirena would not cause any of that." They were a strong proponent of the Mirena and kept saying how wrong I was to think my symptoms were from the IUD. I told her that I had no sex drive at all. I felt "dead inside" and numb. I had issues with repeated yeast infections. (never had those before) I was having terrible bouts of hemmroids that left me in tears/pain. The Dr. said, well, you're getting close to 30, you still have baby weight, so of course you feel dead inside and your self worth is shit. You need to lose weight. I kid you not, she used that language. I told her, I just want it out. They also said that when you have an iud in, it will not cause "old stuff" to accumulate up there. After they took it out, let me tell you, old stuff was indeed up there because it came out. It was not like a regular period. Within the next couple weeks, the hemmroids I had been battling disappeared just like that. I haven't had them in years now. I have a regular sex drive. I know they dr. has their opinion and maybe there's just not enough research done about the possible effects of the Mirena IUD... but all I know is that my problems just went away after I got it taken out. I have a hard time thinking it's just coincidence. Some Dr.s have their own agenda.

I have had the mirena since 2007 and the first few months my body had to get used to it like any other birth control and bled for a little bit but had also just had a baby so is also commen to bleed for a while after that. I don't have a period at all anymore and no cramping or anything like that. I love it and would recommend it to anyone. There are side effects like any other birth control but a lot of what u am reading are also side effects of any birth control.

Yes, I have had the same issues with Mirena as most of the women who have commented on your post. I had mine removed two months ago (after 3 1/2 years) and it was the best decision I ever made. I feel like a completely different person! I've lost weight, I have no pain, i have more energy and hair (lol). And the best part...I stopped bleeding. I bled for three months straight (no mucus or clots, just blood, heavy DARK blood). Pills suck but they are better than having a foreign object stuck inside you f***ing with every aspect of your body. Take it out, take it out, take it out. Best of luck.

If you are having a change in bleeding, discomfort and mood, you should schedule to go see you ob provider. Your whole uterus should not feel tender. You need to be checked for an infection. The symptoms that you are describing are not normal! Please see a provider in an OB department. Feel better!

well im new and i just saw this. so i know im posting to an oldish topic. but i did have a mirena right after i had my 2nd to last child back in 2007. i had it for 2 1/2 yrs and i started exp. lots of abdomanel pain, sex seemed so pointless cause it hurt so much. at first i took it as cramps but it continued to get worse. i went and got checked out come to find out the damn thing got inbeded in my uterus. well had to get it surgiclly removed and that was that. i stayed away from the damn thing. i just wanted a birthcontrol that was slightly permante so i didnt have to wry about a pill and just a 5 yr break seemed like a nice idea and then decided if i wanted another baby. well on top of that i was not taking birth control and i was having kind of safe sex. well i didnt get pregnate and i was honestly thinking the damn thing messed sumthing up. but in april of 2012 i found out i was prego after a yr of trying and nothing happing. so what ever was going on i will never know.

I had the mirena after my first pregnancy and had many if the same symptoms as you and others, as well. My doctor told me it was not bc my mirena but if I wanted it out he would remove it. Once removed, my symptoms subsided.

After my second pregnancy I had the copper IUD inserted (hormone free) and I love it!!

I have the 5 yr an only have had discharge sometimes I have a period or just light bleeding but I also have pain it comes an goes but when I was working at a warehouse it made the pain WORSE! So since in not in a realtionship I've given up sex an will take it out!!!!

I had my IUD turn sideways. It hurt so bad I thought I had a cyst rupture. I have since had my tubes tied, but am still very bloated (some days I look very pregnant) sex is still very pain full for me. It has been 1 1/2 years since my IUD was taken out.

I have not had Mirena, but I have recently been seeing lawyer advertisements on TV about complications of using Mirena. My suggestion would be to have it taken out and have any and all procedures done to ensure that all is well.

I had it placed about 3 years ago and all was fine for first year n half then experienced terrible stomach pains they checked it hadn't moved and all was fine. I got sent for scan and they noticed my bladder wasn't emptying completely and my right kidney was storing urine. Then my periods became very heavy and I was always faint. I got out in tablets to control the bleeding and I'm fine now, altho o get terrible cramps before and after my periods. It's due to be taken out in June and I'm thinking of having it out early, and see what happens after that.

I get cysts because of mine that cause a months worth of odd symptoms and severe cramping and discomfort. They make my uterus swollen and will come up on an ultra sound.

i was getting infections every couple of weeks but other than that none. but i jusst had it taken out because the medicine for the infections sometimes didnt work and they were just too much work.

I've had mine for just over a year, and have had irregular bleeding ever since I got it. Pretty much every single day! It's a miracle if I go a day without spotting. I keep debating whether or not to get it out or to just wait and see if the bleeding stops. I'll probably give it a little longer unless anything gets worse, but bleeding everyday is not worth having it in. There is another IUD my doc had recommended without the hormones so you still have a period every month, but he said there shouldn't be any other symptoms. I might look into it more.

I had mirena in for 4 1/2 years and thought I loved it. I was having very strange things happening to me and after I started researching them I came across 'silicone toxicity immune syndrome' google the side effects and I bet you'll be shocked at how many match what you've been going through. I had nine taken out in September and have slowly started to feel like myself again. Good luck.

I have has the Mirena for 5 years now. I go in tomorrow to have it replaced. I have the cramps which I can get through with midol or ibuprofen. I don't have periods. I do, at times, have pain in my lower abdomen but that didn't start until about 2 months ago. Just had my first Bladder infection with it 3 weeks ago. But other than that it has been the greatest thing. I think everyone is different, and I'm hoping my 2nd one goes as well as my first..

I'm heading towards the 5 year mark since I had the Mirena put in a year after I had my son. I was always a heavy bleeder and always had severe cramps. Never had any real issues with the Mirena. I would have light periods and no cramps at all. I would experience bad lower back pain but it wouldn't last longer than a day. Lately I've been experiencing severe cramps like I use to before I had the mirena. I'm assuming its my time to take it out. I plan to do so in a month or so. Probably won't put another in just because of my lack of sexually activity. But if I would definitely do it again if my situation warranted it. I'm just enjoying the two kids I have now. I'm still young and have plenty of time. If I was in your situation, I would definitely go to the doctor and have it remove. No one should feel that unpleasant. I hope things will get better for you.

Not saying it can't cause problems, but thought I should post that I have had very few and minor issues and love my Mirena. I had one before I had a baby. Insertion was horrendous, but it was in for three years, I had no side effects aside from an occasional poke and my period all but disappeared. I was pregnant within a year of having it removed (though to be fair my husband was deployed a lot of that time) and had another one inserted a few months after my son was born.

I'm not dismissing any of your issues, but not everyone experiences them. It is one of the few birth controls I can use and I love it.

I've had mine for amost two years and no major problems so far. When I had my 1yr ck they couldnt find the strings but an ultasound showed it was fine. I know when I had the paraguard I bled for a year staight and it was pretty heavy and constant. I was told certain ones dont work for ppl. I cant have paraguard or the implanon cause I'll bleed all the time. Hopefully you find out what works for you soon.

Christy, i feel your pain, i thankfully never had it puncture throu, but i did experience a crap ton of symptoms that beyond ruined my life, i am sending you positive vibes to help any long term inflictions you, myself and many others are are now living with, and most likely for the rest of our lives. Doing research after having it removed has been a terrifying eye opening experience. and it breaks my herat for every woman that gets decieved to get this life ruining product. The doctors and the FDA minimize all of the negitive side effects and NOW they are all starting to come to light because they relased it to the general pop without knowing the long term effects, or at least with minimizing the neg effects

Anny, ok i may come off cold and callous but what are you talking about?? The doctor said it has to be "replaced every 2 years" OMG!! For real?? $300+ per unit and it needs to be replaced every 2 yrs when they TELL you it is good for 5 years. Most of the women that have told about their symptoms had the symptoms pretty much right away. (like myself) and i am offended by someone who claims to have had the same issues and to have that person say "get a new one" tells me (heres where i may be cold and callous) you are full of crap! do you work for Mirena? cuz if you LIVED the turmoil that little device puts you in, you would be reccomending that NO ONE gets mirena..... just saying

I got mirena after having my son. I had a horrible time with it they said I would have some light bleeding for a opulent days after getting it put in, I bled til the day I had it taken out 8 weeks later moderate to heavy bleeding.they said give it time and you will normalize. In those 8 weeks I had painful cramping, bleeding, stomach pain, and infection. They tried antibiotics to see if that would fix the problem, it helped a little till the medcation ran out. The worst was if you bent over or tilted the wrong way you would instantly feel like vomiting and passing out from pain. The final straw was a temp of 101, heavy bleeding, and severe cramping. I was sent to get an emergency ultra sound to make sure it didn't go thru my uterine wall, luckily it had not. So it was removed that day. However I still get infections now from time to time. Go see your OBGYN to be safe and best of luck.
