Baby Cereal and Gas

My son seems to get gas when I give him baby cereal. It doesn't matter if it is mixed grain, rice or oatmeal. He wakes many times during the night after consuming it with horibble painful gas! Am I crazy or does anyone else have this problem? What can I do to fix it? Is it an allergy? He doesn't have this reaction with other baby foods.

Yeah I ended up giving away 7 boxes of cereal left over from WIC when my daughter turned 1. That was with my daughter eating it everyday. I used to buy her baby food from Winn Dixie when it was on sale. I know I would buy 20 jars at a time and it was around $10 or so maybe less and that was for stage 3. If you have a Sams Club membership they sell the Gerber stage 2 in bulk. I don't remember the price. If your son as the pincer grasp already you can start giving him cheerios and cereal puffs that might help satisfy him more. You should talk to your doctor about maybe bring in regular outmeal into his diet or even cream of wheat. It might just be something in the baby cereal that doesn't agree with him.

I have cut it out. And the gas has gone away. I just hate not being able to use the 2 boxes of cereal I get each month with WIC. Baby food is so expensive and cereal seems to fill him up quicker. He is 6 months old and eats a whole jar of stage 3 baby food! Mixed with cereal, he only eats half that amount. I just have never heard of such a thing!

If you're concerned that he's having gas from the cereal don't give it to him for a few days and if his gas goes away then you can conclude it is the cereal and not something else. If it were me and I noticed cereal giving my child gas I'd just cut out the cereal. You said he's on baby food too so he'll get the nutriants from that and from his formula. You could always check with his doctor and see what they have to say. There are gas drops and ginger also works really well for tummy problems.

Ok will do. I am on WIC so I get the brand of cereal they give me. But I will try this. Thanks!

i know with my son he couldn't eat the oatmeal cereal. all we gave him was rice cereal but they have different flavors,he loved the banana! if we had to give him the regular kind we would mix it with the water and then i would do half of spoon of the cereal and half with baby food strawberries. he was allergic to something in the other cereals(glutin) he has grown out of it. i recommend trying the nestle cereal, rice and mixing with water. make it really running don't make it as thick as they say too. it might just be too hard for his belly to digest at the moment but after a week try it a bit thicker and so on...also if he likes baby jar fruit, try that in the mornings instead of cereal and just do cereal at bed. i do not recommend only fruit before bed as it takes a bit longer to digest. it would make my son really gassy.

I have mixed it with formula and baby food. I have tried just giving it to him in the a.m. but it doesn't make any difference.
