My boy will be 8 months in just a few days and a little over a week ago he started crawling. The week before that he stopped wanting to eat any food, other than sweet potatoes and only wants his sippy cup now. I don't know how to get him to eat his food at all. In order to make sure he is getting enough to eat I feed him his bottle at snack time. I've cut that back to only 4 oz to make sure he is hungry for meal time but still doesn't want to eat. Infact as soon as I put him in his highchair he gets fussy. I read many columns on babies and solids etc and I've tried letting him feed himself but he gets frustrated because he can't quite get the food in his mouth yet. Not sure how to get him to eat solids again.

Solid foods are just for fun and practice before the age of a year old. So don't force him if he doesn't want it. Also, I don't think you should cut back on his bottle feeds. He should be getting a bottle first and then fed solids second. I also agree that you should start him on table foods if you haven't already. Some babies just plain don't like purees and want the textures of regular foods. Feed him bits of what you're eating and see if that intrigues him enough to try it. Either way, don't force the matter. He'll eat when he's ready. Keep us his calories in the meantime by maintaining his bottles.

best thin to do is give him finger foods so he can experiment with them and sit with him and have your lunch etc at the same time so he can watch what u are doin with your food and get a teddy and say 1 for teddy 1 for baby and he might get back into eatin hope this helps

Yea, just leave it in front of him, that is the best way for him to play with it and figure it out. I would always nurse Cade so he wasn't starving and would get less frustrated.
If you don't want the Gerber stuff you can get fresh fruits. CJ loves nawing on fresh cantaloupe.
Ok, I'll stop rambling on, haha.

It took CJ some time to get used to how to pick up the food and get it into his mouth. I just put some cheerios on his tray and let him have at it. He still slaps at them, which adds to the mess. Or if he grabs too much and they sit in his palm (closed fist) he throws them. the first thing I tried with him was the Gerber Crawler Puffs because he was so young when he started to refuse the purees and I knew that the puffs pretty much dissolve like. So, he started with the Gerber Crawler Puffs which were too small at first so I had to put them in his mouth. Also the Gerber Biscuits and the banana cookies, these he could do on his own. He LOVES his big boy food now that he gets the hang of it. At first CJ would make that disgusted look, which to me is funny and then we would keep trying... continued to try and get a good laugh at his silly face, but he quickly got rid of the silly face and decided he liked. He's not a sippy cup yet, but he only takes a bottle here and there... he is breastfed.

@Kristina, thank you for your advice. His pediatrician told me that I should start weaning down his bottle intake to 16-24oz. While I had much success on this at the start, I began having trouble more and more when he finally got the hang of the sippy cup. I do not know how to get him to eat again and stop fussing for the sippy. How do I make meal time fun? Do you have any tips?

@Sarh thats funny, I am giving him purees because he wont take to the finger foods. I put them in front and he just slaps them all around. Sometimes, rarely, he will pick them up but cannot put in his mouth. And when I do it for him he just attempts to crunch down with disgust all over his face then spits it out. What did you first start your son on with the finger food?

My son is small for his age and I was concerned about his eating habits right from the beginning because he ate so little. I talked to his doctor and she refered us to a pediatrician. I also talked to a dietician about his eating habits and she was able to give me tips and recipes, but he still ate very little. My son is now 29 months old and he is finally starting to eat more. He still only weighs 24 lbs and is 34 inches tall. In my opinion I would just keep making your son food and trying to make mealtime fun. eventually he will start to eat more especially when he starts to get more active. Plus he is still very young, right now his main food source should be breastmilk of formula, purees and finger foods are just to get him used to things in his mouth other than just liquids. Good luck and have fun!

Are you giving him purees still? Try giving him what you eat just in pea sized pieces. My son stopped eating his purees at about 5ms, not he is 7ms and will only eat finger foods/not pureed. We don't have a high chair so I used to feed him his purees in his car seat, now if he knows we are not going anywhere and I try to put him in his car seat to feed him he must realize that I'm trying to give him purees and he flips and turns himself out of the car seat. So for the finger foods I put him in his exersaucer or walker and he eats fine, but makes a huge mess. haha.
