i just wanted to talk about how cool baby sign language is! it took a few months for my daughter to catch on, but once she realized she could ask for milk and get it, she hasn't stopped wanting to learn more. now i can teach her a new sign in a day and she'll be a pro at it the next. it has saved her dad and i a lot of headaches. i STRONGLY recommend teaching your child, too. it's pretty amazing how quickly they can learn it once they understand that it's another way to communicate

Quoting Rebekah:

I started to teaching my son at 4 weeks.  He caught on at 8 weeks to "I'm hungry" and "I'm sleepy".  Now he knows "Happy", "Sad", "Mad", "I want to play", etc.  It's great!

Wow really?? Where did you get the info to start this? Sometimes I wish he could tell me what's wrong as I just don't know, I can't believe he caught on at 8 weeks that is awesome! Any help would be great

I got the materials from another mom on craigslist, but I know one of the most popular programs in baby signs which you can google search on the internet. Baby Einsteins also has a DVD, but my daughter wasn't interested.

I was just wondering where you can get the materials needed to start this? I have a while to go to start as my lil Liam is only 2 and half months old but I am very interested in trying it.

Thanks

they say it's best to start around 6 months because their coordination/memory isn't quite ready until then. we started at 6 months and it took her until she was 10 months to catch on so don't be in a hurry just yet and don't get discouraged if it doesn't take for a while. he'll get it eventually

I found it easier to teach after my daughter had turned 1. I tried when she was 6 months, but had no success. Now when I do teach her she learns a sign in a matter of me teaching her it that day. I also teach her words that she can already say, that way she can say it and sign it. However, I noticed she's gotten a little confused lately with "more" b/c we have her say more please and so she got her sign confused. She kind of clapped instead of signing so I had to work with her just signing more instead of trying to do both. My daughter is only 15 months though, but starting to say two word phrases so it was a little bit of overload I think.

It IS a great way to ease frustrations for both baby and parents :)

How old is your daughter now?
