I know some people are pretty extravagant with their first birthday parties for children, but i was thinking it should be more of an intimate family celebration as they dont even know whats going on, any thoughts???

I totally agree! B/c a 1 yr old still needs naps and would probably only last an hour at a b-day party with THAT many people and THAT much stimulation. Your baby would probably be ticked. lol
I would however, get him/her their own cake to destroy and enjoy! and take lots of pictures and decorate a little! It is their 1st bday!

Save the money you would spend on a petting zoo, cotton candy machine, clowns, blah blah blah for when your child is old enough to remember and enjoy it!

My husband said it best when I didn't know what to do, "The extravagant 1st birthday parties are for mommy."
My defense was, "BUT THE PICTURES AND VIDEOS!!!!"
He said "Thats also for mommy"

Since my b/g twins first birthday was in the summer we had a barbecue in the back yard and invited family and close friends.
