hello, i am due july 29 with my first baby a girl and the doc says that if i am still preggers by thursday he is going to induce me within the weekend. i have had contractions ( not braxton hicks, but real ones) and have been walking, sex, primrose oil, sitting on the birthing ball, and even spicy food but still i have been 1 cm and 80% for like 3 weeks, i had a bunch of preterm labor problems ( since about 5 months) they had to stop it a couple of times ( so we're suprised i even made it this far) i'm 5' 4 and weigh now 125 lbs i gained 13 lbs. altogether i am wondering about any of your labor inducing stories, what they did, how long it took and anything else. just to maybe give me an idea as what's to come. thankyou

I was induced with my first, he came that quick, it was 6hours in total from my first contraction to his first breath, but then he was 11lb 10oz so i think he just knew he wasn't meant to come that way, i was rushed to theatre after birth with major heammorage and tearing 3rd degree, and they had to break his collar bone and dislocate shoulder to get him out as he was stuck. my second i asked for c section even though he wasnt as big but had 2nd two weeks early and he weighed 10lb 11oz, NO DIABETES just big babies, but good luck i hope your experience is better than mine!

they give you an IV in most cases to speed up the process and they may give you something to soften your cervix. Since this is your first child you won't know the difference. I had the same with my first child and it lasted 8 hours. Good luck!!

Hey there. I was induced with all 3 of my girls. I heard horror stories too but ill tell you what, i was thrilled to be induced. The labor is supposly worse but it wasnt that bad. Labor for each lasted between 6-8 hours. The epidural didnt work with the first one so i felt everything so that sucked but it did work for the other 2. My biggest issue was them breaking my water. It sucked and it was painful. Dont stress and just remember you will know when the baby is gonna come so thats exciting!! Good Luck Mama!!!

I was 5 days overdue and I was induced. It took 8 hours before I was ready to push at 9.5 cm. Your contractions will be closer together and more intense than natural labor. Also if you get an epidural get it BEFORE they break your water even if your pain is manageable because it will not be a few mins after they break your water and it takes awhile for the epidural to kick in. Good luck! No matter what happens it will be a day to remember.

I was unduced with both of my children. I have nothing bad to say about them. They started me on potocin and then after i started having more severe contractions they gave me the epidural. The experience was great. We all have different stories but hopefully ended up with the same happy ending. I am sure you will do fine and after the labor and your holding the baby it wont matter how she was brought into this world cause looking at her will take all the pian away! Goodluck :)

Heya hun firstly congrats!!

I was induced after being two weeks overdue and it wasn't the best time of my life. I had the tablet put in which was uncomfortable because the nurse was a nasty cow with me lol.

I have Cerebral Palsy in my hips and legs so found it difficult to lie with my legs apart but the nurse wan't very sympathetic and was quite nasty.

That doesnt put me off having anymore though, but try not to listen to other people's horror stories too much coz every labour is different! x Good luck x

Maybe I'm lucky or have a really strong uterus. But all 3 of my children's birth were under 4 hours. With my last (he is now 9 months old) i laboured for an hour and pushed for 18 minutes. exactly 4 pushes.

You can drink a tea called 9th Month Tea which is what i drank during my 38th week and my son was born 2 days before his duedate. Spontanious labour (meaning not induced) is WAY better than being hooked up to IV.

Hi there! I was induced with my second at 34 weeks gestation. They broke my waters the evening before and then the following evening they put me on the drip to bring on the contractions. I started needing to push half an hour later! The contractions were strong and fast but i would not say they were anymore painful then going into labour naturally! When you get the feeling of wanting to push you can push through the pain and that makes it much easier! I would go in with an open mind and not to much of a strict birthplan. See how you feel there is always plenty of pain relief options for you! good luck!

I don't know about the being induced part personally. But I was totally needing to have baby and so I did what my midwife told me to. She stripped my membranes, I went home and drank caster oil mixed in orange juice....NOT DELIGHTFUL AT ALL! Then I also bought a pump and did nipple stimulation which is suppose to produce certain hormones that help you go into labor. I went into labor that next morning at 4 am and my appointment was at 1 or so I think the afternoon before. There are also massage techniques that can cause you to go into labor so that could help. But I'm glad it worked out for me cause I wasn't excited to be induced cause it never was a good thing for my mom so I was a little freaked out about it, but it works for a lot of people. Good luck and congrats!

My experience wasnt how i thought it would be. They doctor decided to induce me the day i turned 39 weeks to prevent my baby from being huge. lol My middle son was 5 days late and weighed 10 lbs 8 oz. They only thought he was around 8 or so. So in turn, i was induced with my third. I went in at 8 pm on a tuesday and they went to give me the cervadil, but i was already dialated, so they skipped it and went straight for the pitocin. And they uped the dose every 30 minutes. Finally at 9 am on wednesday, they broke my water and i had him a 2:18pm that afternoon. But the pitocin is the worst part of it all, because for me i didnt have a "rest" between contractions due to the medicine. BUT... everyone is different. So good luck and congrats on your baby.

I was induced with both my kids. My son was an easy labor I got to the hospital at 7am and had him at 3:36pm. My daughter was horrible I got potocin(which I didnt with my son) and it was the worse thing ever. I went in at 8am and had her at 6:48pm. I didnt get an epidual with either of my kids. Just some meds in my iv. I would recommend getting potocin

I was induced with both my kids and it wasn't tas bad as I thought it was going to be. They put the medicine in me and I started having contractions within 30 minutes, the labor lasted 16 hours with my first and only 9 with my second. Not too bad I don't think. However if you have a nurse that is wearing rings, make sure she takes them off because they can HURT you if she doesn't!!!!!

I am currently pregnant with my second baby and Breah my daughter is 15 months old. She was exactly 7 days late, and I was induced.
I was induced on a Saturday morning at 8am it began, I can't remember anything substantial happening until around 3pm when they broke my water, it was then that I actually began to feel contractions. My labour at that point began to move swiftly and at 9pm I was given my epidural which completely stopped everything until 1am when it was time to start pushing. I pushed for what felt like forever, they used the vaccuum and forceps, and at 4:40am my daughter finally came out.
I was threatened with a C-sectionmany many times, after an hour of pushing with no progress you really don't care at that point how the baby comes, so long as it happens quickly. When all was said and done, I had had a hard labour compared to my friends (non of whom had to be induced) but I would repeat every second of it because I got the best gift of all, my daughter Breah is amazing, sweet, intelligent and hilarious!
Good luck on your journey.

my labor sucked. i went in to be induced and didnt have my son till tuesday morning. it ended up being an emergency c- section after i dialated to 9 and a half centemeters. after my c-section i had to get a blood transfusion because my uterus wouldnt contract and they couldnt stop the bleeding. try everything you can to get ur labor started on your own. if you do end up being induced wait to get the epidural as long as you can cause that slows down the labor process and your at more risk of getting a c-section.. good luck with everything and i hope everything goes good for you,,

I was a week over due and they did and ultrasound and thought my baby, Dominik, was going to be 10lbs. I said lets do it today! They didnt want to at first because I hadnt started to dilate, so they said it could take a couple days and it still might not work, but I said lets do it.. Went into the hospital that day (Dec 10, 08), they started softening my cervix around 3pm. I had contractions all night 2 mins apart so I didnt get much sleep.. By 5am(Dec 11, 2008) I finally dilated 1cm! Thats when they broke my water.. I walked, I sat on the birthing ball, and I even sat in the tub. the contractions seemd to be getting stronger and stronger but I still had a long way to go.. Around noon I got an epidural, I got some needed rest after that. They also gave me some potocin because thing seemd to slow off again. By 5pm I really started to feel alot of pain and pressure even with the epidural.. Finally around 7.30pm I was 10cm and ready to push! And at 9.59pm Dominik was born!! 8lbs4oz 21.5in.. Only took 30hrs of labor with 2hrs of pushing, it wasnt all to bad, if I had to I would do it again.. My whole pregnancy I got sick a lot and even threw labor I was still throwing up.. But the nurse told me it was good because all the pressure of throwing up it helpd push him out!
GOOD LUCK!

I was induced with my first, very long labor & very painful. The second I drank 2 oz. castor oil in 4 oz. orange juice. Was in full labor within 4 hours and went to the hospital at 10:45 pm, welcomed my son into the world at 2:02 am. Much easier, and much faster labor. My children are 7 years apart. Goodluck!

I was induced with both of my boys, I had mild gestational diabetes (regulated by diet completely) so they induced a couple weeks early so they wouldn't get too big. It was great!! I actually asked my midwife if I could be induced with my 2nd & we did again. Contractions are a lot stronger when induced but I had an epidural so no big deal. Both births were easy and fast!! Don't have to worry about if it's real labor, when to go to the hospital & you can eat before, my midwife told me to have a good breakfast before I came in since you can't eat at all after you start.

If your mostly thinned out your almost ready so should be smooth, but honestly if you go on your own or are induced I really think how well you progress & how long your in labor depends on your body

Good Luck!!

Honestly I did not mind it to much. I was induced with my first child which was a girl. I was due that Friday and was scheduled to have a stress test done that Thursday, but the doctors office called and said just to come in Thursday and be induced instead. I think this was because my doctor was off that weekend and did not want me to go in to labor while he was off. I did not have any initial fears about being induced. Part of me NOW wishes I had not been so I could have experienced the whole water breaking and the rush and excitement of going to the hospital. Then part of me is glad because I was able to be more prepared. Also when they have to break your water, THAT WAS NO FUN, But had to be done. After 13 hours of not really hard labor, I had to have a C section, because Her heart rate was slowing down and my oxygen was low. This did not scare me AT ALL. In fact I told them about 5 hours into labor and only 2 cm dilated that the would have to do one. The nurse just smiled and said everyone says that. HA I know my body. Anyway, I did not like the idea of having to push so this was great to hear when they said they was going to do a C section. I still believe that if they had not induced me I would have went into labor on my own that weekend sometimes. But everything happens for a reason. My recovery from the C section was very quick, and after the first 4 days the pain was completely gone, and I returned to work 4 weeks later. Due to having the 1st C section my 2nd (a boy) was also a C section and was planned from the 1st day I visited my doctor. Which I also recovered quickly from.
I hope this has helped you some and has put your mind art ease a little. Good Luck and best wishes to you and the New Baby!

I was induced with both of my children.

First one was my choice. My doctor had planned a vaca, so I did all I could to get to 1 so he'd agree to induce me. Started about noon with the Pitocin and at 2:13 am, Girl #1 was with us weighing in at 7 lbs 11 oz. :) (I've heard ALOT about worse contraction pains with inductions, but I never went to an epidural. I had decided beforehand not to. My doctor broke my water at about 3. Pushed 3 times and she was out.)

Second one was because of gestational diabetes. I went in at scheduled midnight to begin the induction and by that afternoon, Girl #2 was with us at 8 lbs 3oz. :) (Again, no epidural, pushed just a few times and Baby surfed on out. Doctor broke my water again at about a 3, but not much came out until Baby did.)

I'm just letting you know that it doesn't have to be horrible. :) I hope you have an amazing delivery process. :)

And don't get me wrong - it hurt! But if a non-pitocin labor would have been 'easier'... wow, i'm sorry I missed it! :D

Congrats!

Wow it seems like many of the ladies have had good experiences here. I had a horrible experience with being induced. I had High bp and was retaining a lot of water toward the end so I was induced at 37 weeks. I took forever to dilate, i was in so much pain having back to back contractions (and I'm no wimp), my epidural work for an hour and quit and they didn't believe me, my OB wasn't on call so I had a very ignorant doc that asked me if my cervix was frozen and tried to push me to just have a c-section. I went in at 4 am Monday, had my girl at 10:30 on Tuesday. I pushed twice and she was out, which is further proof that my epidural was ineffective. I'm praying that I don't not have to go through that again. I'll pray that your baby comes on her own. Not just because of my own experience, it just better to let your body do what it was made for.

I got a room they took me to the room and hooked me up to the contraction machine thing haha sorry im not sure what it was called but my doctor told me she wanted to wait to induce me to see if my water would brake on its own but unfortunately it didn't so i got the room @ 8:00am and got induced @ around late lunch maybe 2-3pm, then around 8pm is when i could slowly feel my contractions and around 9pm i was ready to push and at 10:11pm my son was born so it was a pretty quick labor :) "during the waiting i walked and rested" trust me get lots and lots of rest if you are having a natural birth. I agree with Jodi 100%. I went 14 days "overdue" (such a relative term) and was bullied into being induced. I was scared and made the wrong decision. I was told my baby was going to be enormous, I couldn't push him out etc, etc. I ended up with an emergency c-section and a normal sized baby. I read Ina May, and was very educated on the subject, and still was convinced to be induced out of fear. Definitely know you don't need to be induced.:-)

You can say no to induction, the Doctor's advice is exactly that, advice, and he can't force you to do anything you don't want to do. If you're due the 29th of July there's really no reason to induce that soon afterward, induction can lead to a heap of complications, not least of which intense pain caused by your body not having an adequate 'run up' to labour and therefore not supplying the endorphins and adrenaline needed to support you through second-stage. It can also be the cause of other intervention being needed, so do your research on it; I'd recommend checking out what Ina May Gaskin has to say on the subject, she's an incredibly experienced midwife with decades of research under her belt so google her site. Remember, no doctor should ever tell you that you have no alternative, his word isn't the be all and end all and nobody is perfect so find what's right for you rather than what everyone's telling you what should be. Luck! No matter what at the end of the day you and your baby are what matters :)

So they induced me 5weeks ahead of my due date. the gave me cervadil at 7pm, tues night, removed it 7am wed morning. gave me pitocin at 11 am, broke my water shortly after, i started pushing at 430pm and my son was born at 445pm....GOOD LUCK!!! Every woman is different on how the induction goes but just ask questions and grin and bear the contrations as long as possible if you decide to get an epidural! They say to at least 5 cm before getting pain meds! Good luck and hope it all goes well!

well congrats fisrt, and well i had my son in december 2008 right on new years eve, i was going into my last check up with my fiance' on the 30th of decmeber 2008 and i felt i was leaking alot, no guhsing of fluids, but felt like i had to pee alot, so when my doctor took me in and observed me, she had used this cue tip that turned black green, and she said i was in labour, i didn't know i was in labour, she said i was for at least 24hrs, i felt nothing... which is kinda usual in first or second time parents, i wasn't even diolate, so the doctors had to enduse me, and i had my baby boy the next morning, i have to say, the epidural was major help, barely felt a thing, which was good. so being enduse is sometimes, good, but you do feel any pains right now call an ambulance and go straight to the hopsital, better be there, than chatting right now, :P good luck.

Just be prepared by being induced it caused my labour to come on hard and fast. My Dr didn't expect it to go that quickly. But all worth it!

I had a great experience. I went to the hospital at 6 am for my induction. It took about an hour to get my checked in. They hooked me to an IV to start, then at 9 am they started my pitocin, and about and hour later the doctor came in and broke my water. I was in labor for about 2 and 1/2 hours before I was dilated at 10cm and then I began pushing for about 15 minutes and my beautiful baby boy was here. I had great time being induced because it took the anxiety out of the process for me. I choose no meds and it was not unbearable other than naseau from the pitocin. It should be ok for you.
