Blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skin and Autism

Katarina - posted on 05/30/2010 ( 15 moms have responded )

My sister is an ABA therapist and she has been doing some research on Blonde hair, Blue eyes and fair skin with the link to Autism. She works with 4 different children and ALL of them have these features. She also had an interview at a preschool that specializes in Autism and Aspergers. and every single one of the 30 children was blonde hair and blue eyes.

Just wondering if anyone has any further information, experience or research for my curiosity and my sister's research?

my BIL has Asbergers (mild form of autism), he is fair skinned but has the blackest hair you've ever seen, and brown eyes.

Im pretty positive it is a coincidence, but maybe your sister should also do her research into the fact that most swedish descendants are BORN blonde haired and blue eyed and STAY that way until between the ages of 2-10 years old then start to change.

Almost every toddler in my family (except for those mixed with one black parent) are blonde haired and blu eyed early in life, no autism in this family

I used to work with children with autism. All had brown or black hair. Some were aboriginal.

Come to think of it, I don't think I know any blonde hair, blue eyed people with autism.

I know a young man (I almost typed little boy, but he's grown up so much!) who has autism and he's dark skinned (native american ancestry) and has dark hair and almost black eyes.

I do know alittle girl who is autistic who is also blonde, blue eyes and fair skinned though...

Honestly, this is very interesting to me, so I'm going to ask the mother of the young man I know. She's very active in the autism community and she may have some insight :) I'll be back after I get in touch with her...

My husband is brown hair, brown eyes.. I was blonde hair, blue eyes as a child, but my hair is now light brown, eyes stayed blue.. Our child is white blonde hair (cotton top, toe head...) and bright blue eyes, but he doesn't show any signs of autism.. My brother was also a blonde hair, blue eyed toddler (his hair is now almost black and his eyes are green).. I was the dominant gene donor for our child I guess, but he doesn't show any signs of autism.

It might not necessarily be each person is blond/fair/etc. as much as children with this features are more susceptible? (sp?)

Okay, really strange. My youngest son was diagnosed the right word? Autistic and he's the darkest in the family. I'm Puerto Rican, hubby is Mexican, both of us have black hair, brown eyes, as does my son. He has the darkest complexion out of his siblings. I've never heard of a connection between Autism and fairness....something to think about...hmmm

We do live in a very multicultural area. This sparked my sisters interest after her last interview especially. It seems regardless of the parents dominant Brown Hair, Brown Eyed genes these children are still fair.

That's really interesting, come to think of it all of the children I have worked with that have had autism have been fair, I can't remember the eye colour and some of them had light brown hair, but all fair skin. That's probably 10 -15 children over ten years, although I do like in a predominately white area, we are not a very multicultural area, so that could have a lot to do with my coincidence.

uber weird. Rainman had brown hair :P But i was volunteering at the Y with autistic adults, and they were all races and types and i can recall one albino man and maybe maybe one other blond... other than that, brown hair, and all diff races and there were about 25 ppl.
