I have noticed in the past few weeks, that my 13 month old son often wakes up with a blue-ish-purple upper lip, all the way up to his nose. It seems to last for about half an hour after he wakes up. Otherwise he seems totally normal. At first I thought he was waking up cold, but he feels warm to the touch all over.

Any suggestions? has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks

It's possible that his circulatory system is still immature. My son's lips turn blue sometimes when he's too cold, so I put on a jacket and socks and he runs around and then he's fine. I'd definitely bring it up with your child's doctor though, to rule out any breathing difficulty.

When I had my daughter 2 years ago this happened to us the last night we sent her to the nursery, we had her in our room every night but 2 out of the 5 we were there, and they had to run a ton of test on her and almost had to leave with out her :(. Her lips turned purple/blue when she was eating so they rushed her into the icu center adn woke me up at 630 to tell me. They had a nerologist check her out, a pediatrician check her out and a few other drs. It was the scariest thing a young mom like me had to go through, I never thought that anything like that would happen to me but it did and now she will be 2 on the 12th of February and it hasnt happened to her since. Bring him to the drs and have him checked out would be my opinion asap like you are planning on. There is a reason why he is like that when he wakes up so dont let them tell you its "normal" or its nothing to worry about. Good Luck. Hope you get the answers you need :-)

thanks ladies!
It is just when he wakes up, and I checked after his nap, his finger nails also looked discoloured. I will make him an appointment ASAP!

Well both of my kids are so white they make white walls look tan and both of them wake up like that. The dr had checked them and told us that because they are so fair skinned that certain areas of their bodies are going to show the blood vessels alot and when they sleep blood flow slows to certain parts of their bodies. But I would have him checked anyways just to give you peace of mind like I needed.

Blue lips generally means he's not getting enough oxygen, is it every time he sleeps? Does it ever happen when he's awake? Also have you noticed discoloration in his fingertips (particularly under the nail)? My son is 16 months and he's had a lot of problems with his breathing in his short life, so I know there are a lot of respiratory issues babies can have. It could also be absolutely nothing and just oddity. I would ask your pediatrician of course, and go from there.
