My 4 month old is still in her bassinett and i want to put her in her crib pretty soon but have not gotten any bumper sets for her. Is it ok to put her in her crib without them?

we never bothered with bumpers, yeah they look nice, but it's another thing for my son to take off the cot, we cant leave anything on the floor cos he grabs it thru the bars, he got 3blankets thru into the cot the other day!!!

also i do think it's another risk of suffocation! like katie says ul prob end up with a limb dangling out but the baby'll squeal if they're stuck!

The risk of suffocation is the main reason we are reccomended not to use them. While my son was still small enough for this to work-depending on your childs size-I used the wedges to keep him away from the bars but he would still twist his feet. So for this I did have a bumber up but the wedges kept him from smooshing his face too close. And just from paranioa-as a then first time mom-I folded the parts near his face backon the lower portions of the bumper. It all depends on each childs sleepins style. so good luck!

I had mine in a cot at 8weeks she was fine the bars themselves are designed so a head cannot fit through you may end up with an arm or leg sticking through however if she does get stuck she will cry if it's uncomfortable and it's just a matter of poking it back through. Good Luck

sorry I just know how difficult it is. My daughter is 2 years old and the amount of different things people were saying and the mean and nasty things that they were saying just made me so mad and upset and made me feel like a bad mum

I just do not want any other good kind and nervous mother to have to go through that

Be safe and keep positive

I think bumpers are a personal preference. Like Michelle, I put up bumpers because my son kept sticking his arms and legs through the rails (and I used the mesh breathable bumpers that Krista mentioned). But then I ended up taking them back down, because somehow my son started hooking his arms and legs over the bumpers which got him even more stuck and upset than just the rails. Now he is almost 10 months, and he rarely gets anything stuck through the rails anymore.

Quoting Natasha:

Thank you for your advice....first time mom so kinda nervous

Hey Natasha, ask all the questions you want. Remember that as long as your child is happy and healthy then keep with it, most so called experts have no children of there own and thus can only say what the book says to do. I think its great that is forum has been introduced, real mums asking other real  mums questions that 99% of the time you need to have a peron answer who has been in if not the same situation then one that is so close to it that you can take confort knowing that you are not alone

Remeber there is not stupid questions.......................... ever

These days hospitals are advising everyone to NOT have bumpers in order to reduce SIDS. You can buy mesh "breathable" bumpers (which aren't as cute) but are said to not be as risky.

Hi Natasha,

Of course you can put her in her crib without a bumper set. When we first put Charlotte in the crib the nurse said NOT to have them. However, she sleeps on her tummy and was always moving around and we would find her with her arm or leg sticking through the bars so we put them back in and she sleeps longer through the night now as she's not getting stuck all the time.
