Can i dye my hair?

I went to hair school and we learned that the whole 'don't dye your hair while you're pregnant because it'll hurt the baby' is just a myth. We worked on pregnant women in the salon all the time and I was pregnant for half of my schooling as well. There is no way for the chemicals on your hair to harm the baby in your womb.

i got my hair colored and hilighted all my pregnancy, granted it was from a salon but i really dont think there is a difference. i was told just dont do a straightener or perm while prego.

I've heard both yes and no to this question. To be on the safe side, I think we should just avoid it and wait until we're not pregnant or breastfeeding. I have roots, myself. :/ Not the most attractive hair in the world, but if your baby's safe and healthy, that's obviously what matters.

My Doctor said not to dye your hair when pregnant and not to while you breast feed. I guess something can go threw to there milk.

I did dye my hair once with regular store bought dye, the rest of my pregnancy was done at a salon with a non toxic hair dye. I have asked women what there Doctors have said and many of them said it was ok to dye your hair. Maybe you can ask your physician just to get peace of mind for yourself. Enjoy your pregnacy :)

i was a hairdresser for 6 years before i became a mom and please dont do it!!!! box colours contain a lot of metallic dyes that can penetrate into your skin. the smell is not good for you either, but you can always go into a well ventilated room.



if you NEED to colour your hair use henna... but just know that you can never bleach over henna...so if you have dark hair its a good option, but if you choose to add hilights later on they wont lift the henna.



also when you're pregnant colour doesn't last as long, even if it is permanent.



my only suggestion if you are planning on using a box of dye, would be to stay in a ventilated room with lots of fans, and maybe even a mask...also dont put any colour on your roots...so basically just use foils and buy a tint brush and stay a few mm away from your scalp. also use Vaseline around your hairline to make sure no dye gets in contact with your skin.

I asked my Midwife that question when I was prego and she said that it was safe to use an organic hair dye but that was it. But I would talk to your Dr or Midwife because everybodies Bodies and Pregnancies are different.

I colored my hair throughout my pregnancy, probably three or four times. My ob-gyn said that not enough of the chemical is absorbed through your skin to hurt the baby & just to be sure to do it in a well ventilated area to minimize breathing the chemicals in. My baby was born extremely healthy & still is! Also I confirmed it with my cousin who is also a nurse. There are NO proven facts that show that dying your hair effects the baby and many women dye there hair while pregnant.

im only 21 weeks, i have been told by my doctor, nurses, close friends nd family memebers has told me tht while im pregnant to nt dye my hair. soi dnt think u shud.

The fumes that you inhale are not good for the baby. I would strongly recommend against it.

You cant get your hair dyed until you are past ur 3months (which you obv are), its not recommended tho.

i did when i was pregnant, and my 8 year old is just fine! i was told you're not supposed to while pregnant, because of the fumes or some such nonsense. but i personally think that as long as you don't stay in a small, enclosed place while waiting for the color to process, you'll be ok. face it: if you didn't do any of the things you weren't supposed to do while being pregnant, you'd live in a bubble.

i have been a fully qualified hairdresser for 12 yrs and ive never heard of not bein able to dye your hair during pregnancy, it is perfectly fine to do so,i dyed mine and all was well with pregnancy and baby,the only problem that can occur is as your hormones r all over the place it may affect the final outcome i.e the colour may not be as bright as it normally is,we dye hair all the time at the salon.
also if the hairdye went in 2 your blood stream then wouldnt it be dangerous full stop not just in pregnancy????
all in all i say its absolutley fine,hope this helps from a proffesional point of veiw??

i'm a hairdresser.. and pregnant with my third... everyone is diffrent.. if hair dye was so bad then why can i put the dye on peoples hair and perm them while i am pregant? i color my hair evey 4 weeks... and it's all good....

You can dye your hair after you are past the 12 week mark. Make sure you are in a well vented area so that you are not breathing the fumes. The only thing that worried me while being pregnant and dying my hair was it might not turn out the way that I want because of the hormones.

i coloured my own hair at home and also got it done at the hairdresser and they said it is fine but if you arent totally sure ask you doctor its better to be safe then sorry but it didnt harm my baby.

I dyed my hair the whole time I was pregnant. I would just reccomend doing it in a well ventilated area. The smell made me nauseated on occasion.

i watch the dr. oz show and it had that question on there and yes u can dye u hair while pregnant. my doctor said it was fine that they is no evidence that is causes harm to the baby...i dyed my hair and my kids r fine...

I am a hairdresser and had my hair done, and did hair all through my pregnancy. I never had any problems, but that is just me. I think you should just do what you're comfortable with.

My friend is a nurse and she told me when i was pregnant with my twin girls that these days its much safer to dye your hair ! because they don't put harmful ingredients into the dye like arsenic!!!! (which i know is WOW they use to put that in there!) so just check with your hairdresser, or if its a at home job check the ingredients! also of course check with your dr!!!! but i did and my girls are going on 7yrs old and are fine. Research it more if your really concerned on the internet im sure you will get tons of good info on there! good luck and happy dying! :-)

I think its perfectly fine. I have 3 kids and dyed my hair when I was pregnant with all of them. It was a waste of money though, I guess because of all the hormones, it diddnt take at all!

I would ask your doctor, I have a 15 month old and while I was pregnant with him my doctor told me that it is perfectly safe, but she said just to make sure that my hairdresser knew I was pregnant just in case there is a certain chemical in the kind of dye they use. My hair came out great and I plan to dye my hair again during my current pregnancy as well.

hiya ashley. i die my hair blonde every 6 weeks and was worried about the same thing. i asked on my check up in the hospital. they said that it wasnt a problem once i didnt inhale much of the fumes and to do it in a well ventilated area. i carried on doing mine every few months all through my pregnancy in the kitchen with the back door open. never had any proplems. if your worried or need reasurance ask the doctor on you next visit.

Basically it is not recommended solely because there is not enough known about its effect, however, a good friend of mine is a hair dresser and worked until very close to the end of her pregnancy which her doctors said was fine.
I got my hair foiled while pregnant too, if it helps my baby had a perfect apgar score, and is currently an insanely smart three year old..... you should be just fine

You can, but I wouldnt!!!! Just remember that the hair dye, no matter how organic and safe is still a chemical, and even though it goes on your head it does soak into your skin and the rest of your body. So would you realy want to have your baby around chemicals? The same goes for getting your nails done by the way!

i colored my hair while i was pregnant and my baby turned out just perfect. i was in beauty school while i was pregnant and my teacher didnt tell me to stay away from color. just make sure you r in a well ventilated area

I do hair for a living and not only did I color my own hair, but I kept on working and ma and my baby are just fine. At home dyes do have more smell, so if you can't go to the salon then please open your window and let the fresh air flow though.

Well I got a lot of diff answers to that when i was pregnant as I finally decided to ask my doc and he said no. He said that even though it is not proven that it can hurt the baby the smell can affect you both. So if it were up to me I wouldnt do it but u should ask ur doc.

Dying your hair is okay. I am a hairstylist and the reason a lot of hairstylists won't do it is because when you are pregnant you have a hormonal change and that could affect the outcome of the hair color or any other chemical that you may be getting done to your hair. It is perfectly safe, just make sure that you are in a well ventilated area so the chemical smell isn't bothering you, because it isn't good to breathe that in pregnant or not. If you do it at home make sure there are some fans on and around you, cover your head when you are done with a bag and then open a door or window and gets some fresh air. I would still ask your doctor, because all doctors are different and they might not want you to do it.

they did a thing on that on "Yummy Mummy" discovery health they said it was ok later in pregnancy (they did a show for mummy make overs) i don't exactly remember at what month so I would look it up first

it's not recomended, but i did right before my wedding, and i got my nails done a few times. i also painted the bedroom by myself at 7 months pregnant (total ot 4 coats of paint) i just had thewindows open and fans on, and mybaby is fine!

i got mine done at the hairdressers when i was about 20 weeks and they said there were no probs. i now have a lovely little girl. i recommend doing patch test even if you used same dye before as your scalp may be more sensitive than usual. hope that helps.
