Ok here is my question.....Last Friday I had sex and the condom broke. I'M NOT TRYING TO HAVE KIDS! I am on birth control. But my period is supposed to start today. I took the next choice pill right after it happened. When should I take a preg test...or should I not worry about it since I religiously take my pill plus used the back up pill?

If she would have been late, then yes. You can get pregnant the 3 days before, the day of and the day after ovulation. If its a week before your period(and you didn't ovulate late) then No you can't get pregnant.

Yes u can get preg anytime I have been preg 4 and each time I know EXACTLY when I conceived n once was 3 days before my cycle once was while on my cycle another was 16 days after my cycle n da other was 6 days before my cycle all my pregs were planned!! Bt 2 of those times I had a cycle after conceiving bt it was very irregular and was mainly a spotted cycle that only lasted a day or two!! Bt it depends on your body n how your body operates!!

You DO NOT ovulate several times per month EVER! you ovulate 1x per month. 5 - 10% of these times more that one egg is ovulated. Please don't just make stuff up and post it here. Tell people the truth when they're asking these questions. If you don't know the truth, look it up!

Yes you can get pregnant a week before your period! Even two weeks! In fact, I'm pretty sure that pregnancy is most possible 14 days before your period is expected. Depending on your age, you can be fertile any time of the month. Some women ovulate several times per month and pop out more than one egg at a time, especially in your early to mid twenties!

It depends on the length of the various parts of her cycle. She could check out the Billings Method - that helped me a lot in tracking when I was fertile and concieving quickly (you can also use it for contraception!). Everyone's cycle is different.
Preg tests are not reliable until 14 days after ovulation, or until 17 days after you last had sex if you don't know when you ovulated. Tests that claim 'early' resullts will tell you, if you read their pamplets, that pregnancy can only be detected reliably later on, and the test will only pick up some pregnancies earlier!

@Dana you don't ovulate 4 - 5 days out of the month! You ovulate 1 day each cycle. You are Fertile for 3 - 7 days being that Sperm can live 3- 5 days after sex and the egg can live 24 - 48 hours after ovulation.

Also, I've noticed with every pregnancy, that my hcg levels are different with every one. My first child did not come up positive until 8 weeks, my second was 6 weeks, and my third was 2 weeks! Depending on how strong the proteins are in your urine, will determine your results. If you have a negative test, wait a week and test again. It sometimes takes a while to build up enough proteins to be detected.

When you worry a lot, stressed, it can delay your period. That is probably what is going on. But there is a chance she could be. I'd tell her to wait 5 more days to take a test though. And be sure to let her know that the pink line can be very very light and be positive. take 2 tests.

i tested with a test from Dollar General (for $3) the day after my missed period. (i had already "wasted" a $20 test!!) i had a postive test and about 33 weeks later i had my beautiful, healthy baby girl! u can only get pregnant when u ovulate (about a week during ur cycle) but it possible that she's pregnant. i would have her take one at the end of this week. if she is pregnant, then it should show.

Someone can get pregnant at anytime during their cycle, even if they have intercourse during their periods. So yes, you can get pregnant right before your period. And the test should say how long to wait, some are for late and some can detect early.

Hello, its such a complicated matter since all woman are different... After +- 12 days after your first day of your period is when you are most fertile, lasting up to 1 week. Thereafter the hormone progesterone is released and the the egg (Corpus Luteum) begins to shrink, becoming a dead empty folicle. and your cycle begins all over again. A cycle on average lasts about 28 day. So it is not likely you'd fall pregnant a week before your menstrual cycle. There is still the possibility...
And there are pregnancy tests available that can tell you if you're pregnant 2 days after a missed period. Your body usually gives a reading once the fertilized egg has implanted itself into the uterine wall.
All the best to your friend. Hope everything goes well.

Hi Corinna,

I agree with Tessa. I'm on a 35 day cycle before. Not sure now because since giving birth my period has gone haywire.

My positive preganancy test didn't show up till 2 weeks after my period was supposed to be due. The blood test wasn't even clear. I had to take an ultrasound and found out I was already 4 weeks pregnant LoL.

I chart my cycles. I could know as soon as 12-18 days post ovulation if I'm pregnant based on my basal body temperature.

It all depends on the person's INDIVIDUALcycle. Women can ovulate at various times - and the time in which they ovulate can change between cycles. Not all women ovulate on day 14. (I'm on day 26 and still haven't ovulated).

If she ovulated very late, she could get pregnant 1 week before her period is "due", although it is actually the day of ovulation that determines when the next period is due, so although she'd think she is "due" for her period, she might not actually be "due" until later. Gosh, I hope that made sense!

as ppl say: ANYTHING is possible.... with my most recent pregnancy with my son, I got pregnant on my bday and started my cycle 3days later...and since my boyfriend and i were (at the time) living two hours apart, I'm POSITIVE it was my birthday when I conceved... I ended up taking a test on sept 1 that was negative and my daughter ended up telling me on the 25th of sept that there "was a baby in your tummy"....sure enough i went on the 30th and got a dollar tree test and it was positive!!! who would've ever thunk??

Technically you can get pregnant any time during your cycle. Tell her to wait about a week after her missed period and then take a test. She may just be late.

I know a few women who ovulate late in their cycle, and they didn't know this when they got pg! They avoided the middle of the month, then at the end of the month they got pg. So it's possible.

Plus, she says she 'can't wait'... well guess what, she has to. Even and early test can't tell her at only 6-10dpo! Not unless she goes to a dr's office for a test, they have quantitive hcg tests, not qualitive tests like home tests are. Most home tests have to have at least 25 hcg units to be able to come up positive, but a dr's test can tell less than that.

I got pregnant one day after my period ended. And I was on the pill. I also know someone that got pregnant ON her period. So it's possible to get pregnant at any point of time. But as for testing, I doubt she could take one this early and find out.

first you can't get pregnant if your not ovulating. and you only ovulate for about 4-5 days out of the month. it does depend on your monthly cycle. a good webpage to look at to find out when your ovulating is MYMONTHLYCYCLE.COM. you do have to put in your email address but I've been using it for years and have not recieved a single piece of junk mail.

It is possible only if she ovulates late in her cycle. If her period is late she can take a test now. I personally would wait a few days though just to make sure i wasn't just stressed about being pregnant lol.

Yes you can get pregnant. You can get pregnant anytime during your cycle. Just depends on when you ovulated. Usually about 10 days after DPO ( Days past ovulation ) you can get a positive. Anywhere from 10 -14 days.

It happened to me. I ovulated late. My orginal due date by my last period was November 15th 2008. My doctor changed my due date because Ultrasound ( early ) showed that my son was a lot smaller then where he should have been. They changed it to the 25th of Nov.

You can ovulate at anytime during your cycle. Most women though ovulate at 14 days after their period. Some don't ovulate at all. Some early and some late. It depends on the biology of the women.

Yes, you can get pregnant a week before your period if you've had sex during that time. You have to be at least a month along for the test to come back positive.

It takes 14 days after intercourse to take a pregnancy test because the hormones have to be high enough for the test to pick it up her best bet would be to go to the doctor to find out.

I have to echo what Jami said. You can only get pregnant when you ovulate. There has to be an egg to fertilize and this only happens 1 time a month. For anyone who isn't really sure how the whole reproductive system works Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a wonderful resource.

You can get pregnant anytime, even during your period. I'm not sure how long she should wait before taking a pregnancy test. Sometimes it can take a while to get a positive if you are pregnant. It took me eight weeks before I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, but my sis found out at around five weeks. So that's a hard question to answer.

I would say if her cycles are very regular (do not vary for more than 1-2 days either way for at least a year) then no she could not.

the reason I say this is because if she's SURE she gets her period when she's supposed to, even if she DOES ovulate 5 days before the embryo would not implant yet, not until 7-10 days.

To PP, no you cannot get pregnant "any time of the month" only when you ovulate. which for most women is one day. the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself are the 6 days of the entire cycle you can get pregnant.

Provided she ovulated in the middle of her cycle like most women do then it's unlikely she would get pregnant. But if her period is due she can take a test. Unless she ovulated late for some reason then the test would be accurate. The only way to know is to test. Likely she's late because she's stressing about it.
