My son is 7 months old and is a pretty big boy. He's 28 1/2 inches long and weighs 18 1/2 lbs. So recently we decided to get him a new car seat. We are still using it in the rear facing position. My mother in law bought it so she always keeps it in her car. (we live with her) It just kind of bothers me because we barely ever have him in her car and she bought it for us...so i dont understand why it is in her car. Anyway, that isn't the actual problem. She doesn't put the car seat in the middle of the back seat. she puts it behind the driver's side. I really don't agree with it at all, it's safer for him to be in the middle and it worries me. What do you all think??

maybe you should ask her what her reason is for hooking it on the side where you don't want it...i have my son's seat hooked behind the drivers seat as well for a few reasons - i couldn't get it in tight in the middle because of a hump in the seat, and it's easier for me or my husband to get at him/see him from the front seat

Technically, yes, it's safer to have him in the middle. Our truck doesn't have the latch system in the middle so I use the seat belt and it works out great. However, we are having another child in July and will be getting another vehilce (either a van or a crossover). One or both of them will have to be by the door then. If you just have one child then just ask her if you can move the seat over. It may be difficult for her to get him all the way to the middle of the vehicle too so I would make sure she can get him in or out. If she doesn't go many places alone with him then this may not be an issue.
