Mostly I am interested in people in North Carolina responding, since that is most relevant to me. But any info is welcome! I am not interested in having a big wedding to-do. My family does not expect a ceremony, so we have basically decided to just get married. We don't have much money at all with the little one, so we just want to get a license and get married. I thought it would be fairly simple, like something you could do in a day. Apparently not? Anyone else done it this way? People get married in Vegas on a whim every day why is it so complicated in other places???

We thought we could get our liscense and get married the next day. We decided to get it early and I'm glad we did because we had to wait like three or four days.

We got married out front of the courthouse (Which was beautiful!) with a JP.
I dunno why some states make you wait and some do not. I know we did and I'm glad we showed up a few weeks earlier or we wouldn't have been able to get married on the day we wanted! :)

Minnesota law is the same. You fill out paperwork, wait like two weeks then go back sign some papers. Wait for the Judge to have a opening. They can't make it easy or else they wouldn't make any money of ya. lol

because vegas doesnt make the couple go thro the same legal precedings going to a court house is the ssame as throwing a big deaal wedding and your every state differs but most have u make an appt for the license and one for the weddingone or both of which u pay 4 now several ppl i know have done a ring exchange ceremony and have more of a common law marriage instead paying for one then when funds are right for them do it however they see fit

My Husband and I just got married at the court house...we were together 10 years to the day that we married....we did everything backwards. Had our daughter so no money for a wedding then ...next we bought our house so we put off the wedding longer...the we were blessed with another baby...so it was put off longer...then we just said we wanted to be husband and wife...so this past may we just went to the court house and it so happened that our court house only marries on Friday which as god would have it was our 10 year anniversary together it took about a week of planning and I did wear a nice dress...and we invited a few of our close family members...I have to tell you I would not change one thing....The most amazing thing now is to look at him and say he is my Husband!

I am in California, but my husband and I were planning a big wedding.... but then we just decided to go to the courthouse... I called the courthouse 2 days in advance... got the marriage license 30 mins before the wedding... and we were married quickly and for $100. I don't regret a single thing about it!

My husband and I had 2 weeks to pull it all off before he deployed again, we filed for the license at the courthouse on friday and went back the following monday and were married then and there. Our daughter and his parents were the only ones at our real wedding. It was a total of like 3 hours waiting at the courthouse both days.

in washington, you have to get the license 3 days before you want to get married, and you cannot get married in those 3 days, after that you call your local court house and set up an appointment with a judge, they do charge a personal fee and the license here is 64$, if you call your court house and ask about it they will also explain it all to you. good luck and congratulations :)

It cost 50 bucks for us to get married at Justice of Peace...(JOP) I am telling you it was the best thing we did.. It was personal, private, and cost 50 bucks... haha did I mention it is cheap.. :)

I got married fairly easy.. who says you have to spend a lot to be in love and have a wonderful marrage? for less than 75 dollars we were married. This was 8 years ago, and I am still happy to be married.. no more than any other person who spent a lot.. in fact I went back to work that day.. now we are saving for the honeymoon we never had.. next summer ;)

My husband and I got married in North Carolina about three years ago at the court house. I do not remember it being a problem. You usually have to and get like a permit first (with your birth certificates) and schedule an appointment. Good Luck!

i don't know where exactly you're from, but in winston salem & raleigh, the liscence is a mere $65 and you have 60days to use it! My significant other and I are doing the same thing... yes ma'am I totally agree nowadays $$ is too tight, half the people who attend big weddings are "doubters" in the first place, && who has the time with two kids??? {we have two} we're either doing the courthouse of having his uncle do it since he's a pastor.... I hope that everything works out for you and don't let anyone change your opinion... you can always have a reception and hell... if ppl prefer u to have a big wedding tell them to friggin pay for it!
Best of Luck to you and yours! May your journey be lifelong, funfilled, and blessed

We live in TN & called the courthouse to make an appt. a couple of days in advance. Got the marriage license at the county clerks office (we needed current dr license, ss cards & birth cert for both of us) then went upstairs to a small room and was married by the county exect. Had to go back to county clerk to have the marriage license signed. It took about 2 hours from filling out papers, getting lisence & saying "i do". Had to have 1 witness. Very small, my husband, myself & my dad. It cost 100$ for the license & no fee for the county exec to marry us. The end outcome of us being husband & wife was the most important for us. We may do a vowrenewel (nov 24 ) for our 1 yr for our family members

I live in Florida, but my husband and I went to the courthouse on a whim and got married. I am so happy we did!!! We were married by the clerk of courts on that day, but, if I remember correctly-it will be 10 years ago soon, we had to wait like 3 days for a marriage license or something before we had an official document of our marriage. Or something like that. It was a while back.

But, we are very happy here almost 10 years later!!!

We did the Justice of the Peace and we needed to make an appointment. Because he is so busy. We set if for a few months later. We got our license after we were wed. We had a great time. They held the ceremony outside in a gazebo. The weather was gorgeous. Afterwards we all went out to eat a fancy Italian Restaurant. I didn't want a big wedding either.

Im From California so Im not in your criteria lol, but I had a wedding and as much as I loved how it turned out, it was so stressful. Thinking back, I would have taken the money we spent on the wedding and went on an awesome honeymoon because we didnt really get one. Do what you and your hubby want, in the end, becoming man and wife is what matters, not the ceremony. If your family is that unhappy, have a small reception after.

I live in Texas and worked for the Justice of the Peace. It is fairly simple here. You get your license at the County Clerks Office and make and apt with the JP Judge. It takes a few mintutes and then you turn your license back into the County Clerks Office. You can also have an officiate at your church do it for free if you are needing to save on money.

I got married in Jacksonville, NC at a court house. All we needed were: driver's license, social secruity cards, birth certificate and two witnesses (I believe that's everything). It happened in less than an hour's time once you fill out the papers. And people just around the court house are usually happy to be your witness. We got our taxi driver and a random guy who was waiting on his papers to get back to him on some vehicle accident that happened, it was fun!

you can print the marriage license application right off the internet off of the courthouse site and then take it right up there! You just have to schedule a time with the magistrate to get you married!

my husband and i got married in the courthouse (wisconsin) in february of 2009 (a couple days before concieving! honeymoon baby :D )...we had to apply for our license 6 days before the scheduled ceremony and we had to pay $100 for the license, and another $100 just for the "ceremony."

all in all, despite a bit of planning ahead of time, it was pretty simple. we each needed certified birth certificates, social security cards, and proof of residence.

it was super quick and we could have brought up to 20 people with us. We definitely don't regret doing it that way...we know how important we are to each other, and our families see it as well so we didn't need to spend tons of money on it...and someday when our own family is complete we want to have a "real" ceremony so our children can be apart of it.

my brother an his wife considered getting married in vegas and all the chapels they looked into were no cheaper than $500, and thats not taking into account the license. i think you pay for the ceremony, and the paperwork comes afterward

It can be very easy. We contacted our local city clerk to find registered officiants. We contacted a retired justice of the peace, set a date, it rained outside where we were planning to get married, so she offfered us to come to her home. It was just us and 3 friends, 1 week before Christmas. The foyer in her home had a huge tree decorated and was beautiful. She couldn't accept money for the service so put together a nice basket for her and her family, with special hot cocoa's and cups and chocolates.

Every state is different, but most states (other than Nevada) have a 2 or 3 day wait from when you apply for the marriage license to when you can legally get married. Basically, they have a "cooling off period" LOL!

Usually, you both go in and apply for the license (and may need a witness to even apply, we did here in NJ) then you're done. You can have a private ceremony or call the local courthouse and schedule an appt. with the judge (which was free) then took the papers the judge signed back to the township to prove I got married. So I got married for about $15. Can't beat that!

i had one at the court house myself i forget what it cost but not much. what they would do is have you get your lic. then if you wanted to be married by them they would take you guys to a court room or a room that not being used and then marrie you there. i don't think they have special rooms for marrieing people. would had my mother and brother there. we also took are own camra for pics. was not anything big but all we could afford at the time. nice thing is then at a later time you can have another cero. when you can afford it. i dont think the price for the person to marry you is that much at all. best of luck!

I went with my cousin to the JP. They signed papers and then had a nice ceremony. There was a very small room off to the side with a few chairs and a decorated arch for them to take their vows. It was actually very nice. I photographed it for them, here is the link:

I did a courthouse wedding in California and it was simple. Just remember, you have to go to the courthouse weather you have a wedding there or not because that is where you get your license. usually you need your drivers license, social security number, and mother and fathers names. The justice of the peace will have you sign that the info is true, and then if you want a ceremony they give you a non denominational ceremony then and there. I loved ours, it was simple, private, and I left being married to the most wonderful man in the world.

Yeah everyone keeps trying to discourage me from doing it, but with a brand new baby I can't imagine saving up all that money for a big wedding when I could use the money for her and just have a simple civil ceremony and be married. Idk, to me, being married is the important thing. I might have to call or go down there. The website gives hardly any info. except that it costs $60 for the license, $10 for the certificate, and you have to have someone perform the ceremony, sign the license and send it to the court...but no info on doing the ceremony there! Frustrating!

That's exactly what me and my boyfriend are doing. With a 2 month old, our money is tight. I don't know if it will be any different in North Carolina but we called our courthouse and they said all we had to do is pay for the marriage licence and a judge fee and we would be married that day. The fee's might be different there. But I hope this helped a little.
