When children start on cows milk they are supposed to start on homo milk. I was told this was because of the fat content.

But I was also told that it is perfectly acceptable to give them water during meal times.

I was told it was never okay to give them 2% milk.

If it is okay to give them water during meal times why is it not okay to give them 2% milk?

Maria - "homo" is short for homogenized. I've no idea why we call it that because nearly all milk is homogenized these days. 2%, 1% and skim are all homogenized. It just means the fat is distributed evenly throughout the milk, rather than separated like in standard whole milk that you have to shake.

Kind of a stupid term really since it is entirely meaningless. But I guess it has a better ring to it than 3.25%? Ha.

it's not going to kill them or anything to give them 2%, they won't keel over and die or anything, it's just better for them to have the whole milk because of the fat content. their brains need all that fat to develop.
i think whoever told you that was just trying to make sure you knew to give them whole milk instead of 2%, not that 2% is going to hurt them.

Maybe I missed something what is homo milk. Is that an abreviation for whole milk or is it something totally different.

the fat content in homo milk is good for brain development. the only difference between 2% and homo milk is the fat content. 2% compared to 3.25%... my daughter drinks 2% milk, because she was having problems digesting homo milk because of the fat, it would make her puke. i supplement her with a toddler formula though. whoever told you its "never ok" to give them 2% is misinformed... its recommended to give them homo, but i know of toddlers who cant process cows milk, so theyre on soy, which has less fat in it, and others who are allergic to cows milk and soy milk, so theyre drinking rice milk, which has virtually no fat in it at all.

if you're really concerned about the issue, talk to your child's doctor. they'll be able to give you more information.
