hi mommies!
My twin daughters just turned a year on the 4th of december, and i have been curious as to what i should be feeding them. for months now, my girls have been doing great with the gerber graduates and cheerios, but i want to feed them a more variety "people" food. i know i can give them pancakes, soft waffles, egg whites, ext. for breakfast, but what for lunch and dinner?... also i would like to know for moms already feeding their year old baby these foods, do you still substitute the gerber pureed foods? or just take them directly off and start giving them "people" foods.
I appreciate the feedback!

I just gave my daughter whatever I ate. Just make sure you cut everything into pea sized pieces. At a yr old you should be clear of allergies. Your supposed to avoid peanut butter until 6m-1y (depending on where you read and who you hear it from), this is because it is too sticky and they can choke on it and the same thing for honey. I never gave my daughter the Gerber Graduates, I found they were a waste of money as you can give them the same thing at home from what you cook and eat!

I also used the 'Super Baby Food' book and absolutely loved it. When I give my daughter peanutbutter, I spread it very thin on her sandwich. Really its just enough to give it a little flavor (can still see the bread underneath).

I noticed her that some people mentioned giving peanut butter. peanut butter can be a chocking hazard before the age of 2 so be careful with it. Try spreading butter with it to make it a little less sticky. To get your daughters to eat what you are eating just start with mushy foods like peas and steamed veggies and gradually make the texture more crunchy or chewy with different foods.
My daughter would get tired of chewing before she got full so I had to feed her some pureed food as well but as she got better at chewing and gained more jaw muscle she didn't need the pureed food anymore. Just make sure they are still gaining a healthy amount of weight and everything should be good.

My daughter (13months old) has been eating finger foods since 7 months. She pretty much eats what ever my husband and I eat. She loves fish and chicken. I have a steamer that I uses to steam fresh veggies for her (carrots, green beans, carrots, squash, sweet pots). I also give her cut up pieces of soft fresh fruit (avocado, peaches, pears, plums, etc.) I also give her sandwiches, either peanut butter & jam or turkey. Also I'm teaching her to use silverware and give her yogurt, cottage cheese and applesauce to practice.

Also I never gave my daughter commercial baby food. Gerber graduate meals have very very high amounts of sodium. I would definitely suggest trying to do 'real' adult foods rather than prepackaged foods. They are much healthier.

Now my daughter has had 8 teeth since she was 6 months old and is now getting 9-12 at a year so she can eat some things that other's can't due to fewer teeth.

I give a half of a peanut butter sandwhich on whole wheat, I often toast the bread to make it easier to eat. I give peas, and cut up greenbeans, bananas, thinnly sliced apple and pears, broccoli, squashes of all kinds, I chop up spinich and romaine with a little lemon juice.

I also do mini quesadillas with a corn tortilla. Half a grilled cheese sandwich with olive oil instead of butter. Roast turkey and chicken. I've done beef (I thinly slice the beef against the grain so it falls apart in the mouth) and broccoli on rice.

The only time I give the purees is mixed with oatmeal and that will soon change as well. It was a pretty quick transfer other than with breakfast. I still give her the yougert melts, but that's because it is so much easier to give a few of those then to open a container and feed it to her.

At that age, whatever I ate, my son ate. I would just give him little bites of whatever I had. If you still want to give them some pureed foods, I don't see any harm in it. Making sure they get good nutrition is what is important.
