THere are etter and worse ways to deliver a baby some situations require interventions, but most do not and in the end women should educate themselves on what options they have, how healthy they are and what kind of birth is the best for them. That's all. It is sad that most women just let the doctors decide what is actually convienient for a dr not for a mother. It is sad that women believe all the myths about BF and have no idea what are the benefits of breastfeeding really....Natural birth without any interventions and medications is the best for an average healthy woman, just like breastfeeding, exclusive at leas for a year is, but 90% of women have no idea about it, because they do not educate themselves on the subject. They do not know what critical thinking is....

I don't know why some women think that if you have medication you are not fully alert during labor. I had an epidural (thank god!!) but I was fully alert and was able to tell when it was time to push. After 3 1/2 hours of pushing he was still not coming out because he was sideways. They ended up having to use forceps to turn him and with 5 pushes he was out. I ended up with a 3rd degree tear because of the forceps and his size. I am very happy that I chose medication.

I think any mum who delivers a child in to the world, how ever that may be are super stars.5 of my kids were with nothing at all cause they are born quite quickly and with 2 of them they said i wasnt in labour untill it was to late. But with my 1st i had pethidine but i was very sick and said i would never use it again.Im terrified of needles so would never have epidural.Number 7 is due in oct and i take the birth as it comes.I deal with the pain for how ever long i can and will deal with it at the time really. As long as the baby is happy thats great!! Number 5 & 6 were induced so is that suddenly not natural even though there was no pain relief?( i dont know) If i was brave enough to have an epidural i probably would have 1 .I said to my hubby it would be lovely to have just 1 pain free child birth for once.He said well just have 1 this time. Then i start thinking well i havnt with the others so it would be silly doing it this time.

I agree with the definition of a natural childbirth. However, I don't agree with people saying that childbirth is not a medical experience and that doctors make childbirth unsafe for mother and baby. My daughter could have died if not for the medical intervention my doctor gave me in the form of a c-section. Yes, a woman's body was designed to give birth and yes in general women can handle childbirth. But that is not to say that things can't go wrong, and that medical intervention might not be necessary. I think moms who can handle long labors with no pain meds are awesome, but I also think that moms who have to be induced or have c-sections are awesome. What I don't think is awesome is the bad stigma attached to any kind of "unatural" childbirth. Any way a healthy baby comes into the world, and mommy is healthy as well, is awesome to me. Just my opinion.

ok
1 c section
2 vaginally With epidural
3 naturally no pain relief

IMO i would go with the epidural

i agree partially to the definition, when i think natural its a vaginal birth without any anesthesia, or drug I've got 4 kids and i have done all 4 natural wasn't that bad, if u have a high pain tolerance like myself im usuall about a 8-9 before i can't take the pain. I recommend it over anything else.

I was tricked into having morphine after dealing with double peak contractions for 20 or so hours. There were very little breaks in between my contractions, and not enough to allow me to rest or pass out before being hit with another very strong double peak. The nurse told me that I needed rest of would most likely have to have a C section. I refused the medication, and then she asked "Do you want to have this baby vaginally?" I said yes, and she jammed that needle in me while i was having another double peek contraction.
My labor was over 30 hours long, and that was the only time they did that. The nurse who gave me the shot was chewed out by me and my husband for taking a "yes" to having a child for a "yes" for having drugs.
Oh also, I wasn't induced.

vaginal birth can do the same as a c section, they both can kill you, BUT if i would have had a choice i would have chose vaginal. but i did not have a choice... my cervix is to small, i was in labor for 14 hrs, before it starting hurting not only my son but myself.. I had to have one because my cervix is to small and vaginal birth almost killed myself and my 2 boys.

I did it without any pain releif but they did have to induce because he was just taking up residence in there! I was 2 weeks late and I dont think he was ever going to come out on his own, I was about to start charging his rent ;)

i agree with you , its like it was put to hit a nerve with those who choose a different route than vaginal delivery. some people dont have choices and some people dont want to experience thepain especially if there pregnancy didnt go well. you just want the baby out. you go through enough during the pregnancy, why does it matter how th ebaby is born. this was just mean.

i dont know about this post. i find it harsh to those woman who had a c section or those who choose to have pain relievers.
My first was with epidual
my second nothing
im pregnant now and will probabbly have to have a c section because of the baby being breeched.
i use to feel that the only natural birth was vaginal with no pain relievers.
I dont care anymore how my baby is born as long as my baby is healthy.

I have three children my first I had an epideral and the other two I didn't I must say I wish I had all three without the epideral. I felt great after I had my second two but with my first I felt horrible. It may hurt more but I like the delivery a lot bettewr without the epideral. I didn't make it to the hospital in time fore my second to get an epideral and my third I knew I wasn't going to get one. However, I do think that having a baby vaginally is natural. I say I had all of my children naturally!

I was honestly wondering the same thing when I read this. there was a statment posted as to what the definition of natural labour is, with no question to follow, its interesting that all of the posts stated what they experienced. I beleive no matter what way the baby comes out it's a natural experience just creating and growing a baby and although times are different from the 1700s ?I think anyone who can carry a baby to term (or early) and deliver it (no matter what way) is amazing and natural

Are we really that afraid to use the word "vaginal" when speaking about a vaginal birth? Why do we try to substitute the word "natural" for "vaginal" so much?

I think I DO agree with the above definition to an extent, but so few really get to experience that kind of birth... and since so many disagree on the definition, it's pretty useless.

I came close to having a natural birth. I delivered WITHOUT an IV, epidural, internal monitoring, vacuum assistance, etc. with a midwife, BUT during delivery I tore wide open. It took 2 surgeons an hour and a half, and several boxes of stitches to put me and my rectum back together. They shot me with local anesthetics right and left and I can't imagine being repaired without it.

This seems like something that was just posted to cause a problem more than anything else...

Side note: Some moms have no option but to deliver their child(ren) in an "unnatural" way if they want their baby to live. Every mom should feel good about giving birth to a child no matter what way it happened. One of the joys of modern technology is that we are now capable of MANY MORE live births than many years ago, even if they do sometimes need some sort of assistance.

To the one that made the statement about giving birth in a hospital...I fully agree. Unless you had a child at home in your bed with no assistance except someone wiping the sweat off your forehead....chances are you did NOT have your child all Naturally.

I know, these women do this on purpose though. They are the same ones who criticize women who choose not to breastfeed, or like me, were unable to. They get angry at anyone who chooses to turn their carseats around at a year because it's like 10% safer to leave them rear-facing. They put down those of us who don't breastfeed for the first 5 years of life, and they do it subtley so it doesn't look like an insult. I'm sure some of the women on here aren't doing that, but the OP just posted it to get this huge debate going on, and because she thinks she is better for giving birth "naturally". Well one way or another, the baby is coming out. I consider what I did to be perfectly natural. I wonder do these women go to the dentist and have root canals without pain meds? God gave us the ability to evolve, to discover medicine, to cure disease and prevent infections. THAT to me is natural.

my second baby came so fast they didn't have time to put the iv in! i don't think whoever started this conversation ment any harm by it, no one is saying that no drugs is "better", we are just giving an opinion. i completely understand how for some women "no drugs" is simply not an option, and i am sure that if in Costa Rica (that's where i live) public hospitals would give women the option to take drugs, 90% of women WOULD take them, every available one! haha. all we get, by law, is a IV, so we don't dehidrate, that's all. i'm pretty sure that is given the opportunity, i'd still go without the drugs, but that's just me.

I'm sorry, but all of you who did it "naturally" did you do it out in the barn with no doctors or sterilization like they did back in the 1700's? I'm fairly certain everyone who is admitted to a hospital to give birth has an IV put in. Is THAT natural?

So sick of these women who think they are so much better for going without drugs. Bravo! You can endure mind-blowing pain for hours on end! Does that make you a better person than I? No. Just like the fact that now we all have the option to deliver in a sterile hospital instead of in your house with no sterilization, we also have the option of relieving the pains of childbirth. And for whomever said "knowing I did it on my own is the best feeling in the world" umm, who besides ME pushed MY daughter out?? Yeah, I was there, I pushed for an hour, didn't make a sound, I felt the pain of her crowning for 20 minutes or so. I HAD to be on antibiotics for Group B strep. I HAD to take Pitocin because my water broke and I had no contractions at all. I was so full of fluid my ankles were logs for a week. But you know what? Instead of giving up or exhausting myself because I was in pain for almost 24 hours, I took an epidural halfway through and was able to be somewhat rested when it was (finally!) time to push.

Why are you bringing up this crap? To get a rise out of people who chose to relieve the pain? Because we didn't do the "safest" method of childbirth? What if we didn't have a choice like the mother with epilepsy? THINK before you start shit like this. It's so rude to try and put down mothers for wanting to use relief. We went through 9 or 10 months of pain and suffering not able to relieve it at all, so the grand finale, you damn well better believe I'm going to take the drugs that will make it easier to meet my daughter!!

two pregnancies, two natural births, no drugs AT ALL, a women's body is ment to go through child birth like that, your own body secreats natural "drugs" and hormones that help you through the process, you fall asleep in between contractions to save up energy, i think the best part of it all is that, after the first birth, it only gets easier, my second one was almost born in the elevator in the hospital when we were on our way to the delivery room, i think that if i had a third it'd be born at home probably, hahaha!!

I was induced and was told after that the pain is about 5 times more than not being induced, because I was 5 weeks early I refused any drugs, because drugs for pain relief such as an epidural travel to the baby and will make them lathargic, and with my son being forced into the world early I wanted him to have the best chance so I just took the pain. other than having been induced I had no drugs and a natural delevery. also it is true that having a epidural slows labour then they give you petocin to speed it up which makes it more painfull which makes you want more drugs.... which will often send the baby in to distress and then you have to have a c section

I had no choice myself. I could not have my baby "naturally" without drug intervention (as some people put it). I was diagnosed with HELLP- a form of preeclampsia, so I had to be induced. HELLP can be very damaging to both mother and baby. I also had to have magnesium sulfate to reduce my risk of seizures (I have epilepsy too). The magnesium sulfate, as i have been told, slows the progression of child birth, so I needed more and more pitocin. Then of course more magnesium sulfate. The pitocin caused me so much pain i vomited too many times to count and my whole body shook uncontrollably I could not breath let alone walk. There was no way I could have delivered without the medical intervention. It took 6 weeks for my blood pressure to get back down to normal, and the swelling to go down. Thank goodness I have a healthy baby girl, she was my good news in a year that had so much bad news. As many have said, any mother should be commended for having her child, no matter what process she had to go through.

I had my son with every drug available (Gas, pathadine and epidural) I could not have done it without them in the end he was assisted out by vacuum. I had my daughter without so much as panadole and the after affects were great. However every birth is different even for the same woman. For one I could do without the drugs for the other I couldn't. Call a vaginal delivery or a c-section whatever you want at the end of the day it is still called giving birth and it will still be your childs birth date.

this is an awesome video that would liberate women after watching it!!! childbirth is so beautiful and natural. doctors bully women into thinking we cant do it or dont know how!!! we're designed to! we can handle anything! Doctors make childbirth dangerous for mother and child!

meds like morphine dont actually take away the pain...you just forget the process!

i wanted a natural child birth i even wanted to birth her myself! at home with a professional there, i was told it wasn't safe! My boyfriend and MIL were there when i was delivering and kept saying you need something for the pain you cant do it alone. I was bullied into the meds, i didnt want it and as a result of doctor intervention i needed a c-section. there are studies that confirm women who use meds are more likely to have one. It was for the best anyways, because if i didnt go through such a horrible experience with the doctors and no one wanting to go by my wishes. im going to be a midwife to support other women who wanted what i wanted.

Hi Taya! Interesting topic. I have 4 children and the last 3 I had "Natural". My experience with my 1st was horrible! After getting the epidural I did not feel a thing, after being told when to push my daughter finally came. For the first 2 hours of my daughters life I could not hold her. I was sick at my stomach and to numb to move and to exhusted to even pick my head up. When I found out I was expecting again I vowed to never do an epidural again. During the labor I kept telling myself; "If you can make it to 5cm you will be fine. If you can make it to 8cm you are almost there!" etc....Honestly after making it to 8cm that was the peak of my pain until the baby crowned. As soon as that happened the rest was over just as soon as it began. It seems really sick to say this, but it was the most beautiful pain I have ever felt!! I could feel every inch of my daughter birth and the instant relief when it happeded was amazing! I could hold her and there was no sick feeling. Actually I felt great!! As I saw in the past post this option is not for every mother; however is was for me. Most women have no side effects with the epidural, but I did. I do not push my opinion but I do share my experience with other mothers because like I said " it was the most beautiful pain I have ever felt" . Giving birth is one of the most incredible moments any woman can experience and she should experience it the way that makes it best for her. Any woman that gets to experience this with an epidural,no meds, c-section, or natural, experiences the greatest gifts----LIFE! Congrats to you all :)

Hmm, in my case natural certainly would not have been the safest for my child. My daughter was unable to be delivered vaginally as we found after four hours of pushing, and the failure of vacuum assistance in delivering that my pelvis is not large enough to accomodate the delivery of an average size baby. My daughter was only 7 lbs 9 oz. Had I not recieved medical intervention we would both likely have died. Thus in the future there will not even be an attempt at a "natural" birth.

I had an epidural and was induced.. I had NO energy because I couldn't eat, and I could barely push because I was so numb. Next time, I'm doing it completely natural---I'd rather have childbirth be something that I do, not something that is done to me.

But that is what will work for me---not everyone. I hear a lot of women talk down to women who chose pain medication. Everyone is different.

I never once pushed beliefs on anyone. I simple replied to the post explainign what NATURAL meant. I don't care how a mother delivers her child or how she raises it as long as the child is happy and healthy, so don't start saying I'm pushing anything on anyone. As you said we all have our own opinions and we're entitled to them. The whole topic is about what the definition of natural childbirth is. And quite frankly if you were to ask some one back in the 1700's what it means they'd tell you EXACTLY what I said seems there weren't drugs or preceedures that there are now in 2010. Pay attention to what the actual topic is and you'll realize what I said wasn't wrong at all.
