Depo or Mirena?

So, I'm very close to going into labor with my first child and thinking about what I'm going to do after my husband and I become sexually active again... I know that breastfeeding mothers only have a few options for birth control and I have narrowed it down to 2 options that will work for me. I was on depo for about 5 years before becoming pregnant with our expected daughter.. I stopped taking it b/c i was sick of feeling fat and it took a year and a half to get pregnant... (I lost 50 lbs tho!)

I really want to try the pill or the patch, I've never had that type of birth control. and I really want to see if a different set of hormones wont make me gain so much weight... but breastfeeding moms cant use that kind so I'm looking into either getting 3 or 4 depo shots while I am breastfeeding and then switching to the pill after a year, or trying out Mirena for 9mo to a year and then switching to the pill...

I have had no bad symptoms from depo besides the weight gain, (NO PERIODS WHAT SO EVER! its awesome! ^_^) but I'm pretty sure if i get even one shot I will be as good as sterile for another year and a half (might not be bad) and wont loose any baby weight... :( *also, being pregnant hasn't made me gain as much weight as depo did! believe it or not :P*
but on the other hand the risks with having an object floating around in my uterus make me really nervous.. I really want us to be able to have children again :( and my family has a history with IUD's not working well, or actually causing problems. But I would love to just take it out and have the hormones be gone...

Comments? Opinions? Advice? ^_^

I am open to alternatives if people know any... Except the implant (too permanent for what I'm looking for) and NFP.. there is no way i could keep track of all that right now, maybe after future children if I don't just get my tubes tied (which I probably will after 2 or 3 kids *total*)

to Kashawn: I would LOVE to be able to have it be as simple as condoms.. lol.. unfortunately my husband is allergic to latex and the non-latex poly-urethane condoms are WAY too small for him... lol. we had this problem when we got together and eventually just stopped caring about birth control all together... took me over a year to get pregnant, haha.

to Melissa: Breastfeeding will help keep you from getting pregnant in the first 6 months.. but if you dont bf a minimum of every 4 hours then you risk releasing an ovum... I don't want to risk that so actual birth control is probably going to be required.. ♥

Yeah I think I might be leaning toward depo... just b/c I know what its going to do and it won't make me sterile... I just REALLY want to be able to lose my baby weight... :( no matter how much I diet or exercise nothing helps me lose weight on depo... I'm a DJ and live music performer and really need to be able to get back down to size eventually... I'm not rushing it.. I was hoping to give my self a year or 2 but being on depo would off set that another year ♥ I suppose I should just suck it up tho. lol.

I don't know how true it is but I have been told that as long as you are breastfeeding you tend not get pregnant. I honestly would go on the depo myself but i have mirena in and have had more problems with it then I have ever had in the past with the Depo. I was one of the ones that went off the depo because my OB told me you shouldn't stay on it long and did the pill and then got pregnant with my son. I told my doctor that I didn't want a pill again and she told me about the mirena and I told her my feelings about it but was willing to try it. I will say that when I have it taken out I will never go back on it. I would really talk to the doctor about which would be best but that is my opinion on the mirena. I would do Depo over the mirena anytime. If I could i would have the mirena taken out and go back on the depo.

I got the mirena after I had my son. Before him I was on the pill for a while. I love the mirena. I havent had an actual period in MONTHS. I havent had any side affects with weight gain or anything. did break out a little more than usual but i cant complain. its nice not having to worry about taking a pill every day! give it a shot. but pick whats right you!

I think maybe you should get back on the shot. I was going to try it out in spite of friends with bad experiences, it got lost or traveled for example. Unfortunately, I have a history of bleeding issues and it's is not recommended in my case. Talk to your doc cuz they would know your body better than we would. lol How about condoms? No they aren't 100% but they work. I know the sponge is no longer on the market but what about foam? That always worked for me. Good luck! Hope you can practice a lot b4 the next one. wink
