Do you think its ok for a single mother to stay at home with her child and collect government assistance simply because she wants to? Im talking about the mom who stay at home and gets food stamps and lives in subsidized (sp) housing and does not want to get a job just because.

I think its awful for a mom to just stay home instead of getting a job. Im all for a mother using the programs with her income and seek the options out to get a job. But think its ridiculous just to sit at home with kids because you want to. if you have a child it is your job to provide for your children not everyone else.

I think that is a ridiculous way to raise a child honestly. That's also not guaranteed so if the government decides to cut you off then what's going to happen with the baby? I guess some women don't think about the what if's in the situation.

If the woman is working and still needs the assistance then I see nothing wrong with that or if she's in school full time and getting the assistance that's fine also. Just sitting at home all day doing nothing though is just sad

No it's not okay. I had 2 children when I was very young and had a job even though I hated it. My husband had 2 jobs and we hardly ever even saw each other. I couldn't imagine living like that forever so we packed up and moved to the city and both went to collage and got degrees. Now my husband works, I stay at home and had 2 more kids which we can easily provide for. If something happens with my husbands job then at least there are 2 parents with a good education who are able to get a job. The low income housing could really be useful to a woman with children in a bad spot who wants to work but is just having a hard time. Assistance is for people who are having a hard time, sick, or incapable of getting a job. It shouldn't be because "I just don't feel like it" I can't imagine having no goal in life other than to sit at home and get a paycheck for doing nothing.

I don't really think it's acceptable. I would love to be a stay at home mother but we can't afford it so I teach part time. Why is it fair for some mothers to stay home and take advantage of the system while my husband and I have to work out our schedules so that he can work full time, me part time, and one of us is always home with our daughter because child care is so expensive.

I will say though, if the mother is going to school to further her education so that she can get a better job, I don't have a problem with using government assistance while in school and without a job. That is the one circumstance when it is ok in my opinion.
