hello I don't want to start a debate with anyone on here. I took it with my third child on my due date had been in and out of sever labour back to none for 2 weeks was 3 cm and figured if it was gonna work for sure it would at that point. It didn't work but when i got to the doctor the next day for my last appointment of my pregancy the baby seemed sluggish after a stress test . So he told me they would induce me sent me to the hospital when i Arrived there they found out her heart had stopped in route. I hadn't told my doctor i took the castor oil but when they broke my water she had infact had her bowel movement. When I told my doctor i had taken it he told me it can cause them to have a bowel movement if they are not ready to come. He is a high risk gyno so I am pretty sure he has done his research too. Also once i was induced to give birth to my still born daughter it took three tries to make it work. So bottom line if they are not ready they are not ready and you could be causeing unneccessary stress by taking it. Best of luck to anyone making the choice and god bless you and your new little ones.

I took it and I think it worked. I had a son whose first birthday party was on november 17th, 2007. The due date for my next was november 16th. My first son had tons of medical issues and it was a miracle that he was still alive. I wasn't about to miss his birthday party that I had been planning for 2 months. With the complications I had through the first delivery (ended with emergency c-section after being in labor for 30 hrs), the doctors were planning to induce and make sure I was in a controlled environment. Inducing made me sick so we talked about a c-section. It was scheduled for the 12th. i had been dialated for 3 weeks at 3 cm before that. had my membranes stripped and was having mild labor for a week. I was nervous and scared about another c-section so on the 10th (Saturday afternoon around 4 pm) I went to the store and bought castor oil. My husband and I were watching movies at a friend's house (so we had a sitter for our son) that evening and I went to the bathroom one time. It was loose but I wouldn't say diarrhea. (That was around 9:30 pm) By 10:00 I had contractions every 1 1/2 minutes. We timed them for an hour to make sure it wasn't false. It was exact. My son was born at 7:47 am on november 11th, 2007. Castor oil is disgusting and will make you want to puke but every person I know that took it, had their baby within 24 hrs. One mom I know took it with all 3 of her kids. My mom took it with my sister and brother. There is always a risk in anything. I would weigh your situation before your decision. Might be fine. My baby was ready to come but my body wasn't yet. I think that's why it worked for me. Put my body in motion!

For some people it works, for others it doesn't. My friend and I were due 2 weeks apart and she tried it when she was 3 days past her due date and it put her into labor, but not after doing what it is intended for which is make you go to the bathroom a lot. I tried it the next week and it did absolutely nothing to me. I think it will only work if the baby is ready. And I don't think it hurts the baby because it is not digested so it doesn't every get absorbed into your body, that's why it goes right through you. Usually people who are overdue are the ones who take it and those are the people who are already at risk of having their baby have their first poop before being born. So the correlation might be to the fact they are overdue not that they took the oil.

This is the stupidest thing anyone can do. You could cause your baby to poop inside you in turn causing some pretty scary health issues. Is it really worth risking your babies life? Not to mention the bad that'll happen to you! For the love of God, let the baby comes when he or she is good and ready!

It didn't work for me. I was 1-2 weeks from my due date. I also tried using pressure-point massage, walking, sex, and spicy foods... none of them worked for me. The doctor ended up inducing me with pitocin instead.

You are supposed to wait until ur dilated at least 3 cm.... but I tried it and all i did was go to the bathroom all night long. It tastes disgusting and smells just as bad (despite the proclamations on the bottle of being odorless n tasteless) I would never do it again, but I do know of people that it works for....

I tried the castor oil when i was 37 weeks and i only had a little of the runs, no cramps and i'm going to try it again when 38 weeks. It took about 7 hours to kick in but i only had 3tbsp in orange juice. I told my doctor i was trying it and all he said was not to eat to much after taking it cause you may throw up

it made me be sick & diarrhea plus its absoutely disgusting, theres no evidence to suggest that it akes the baby poo in you any more than if you dint take it (i did do my research) try evening primrose insert 2 and take 2 best b4 bed oh and wrar a pad because its messy. Do sone research but it helps soften your cervix for labour and also makes the 2nd stage speedier (trust me i was only in established labour for 20 mins) hope this helps xx

YIP!! It works......... Everyone I know of that has had castor oil have given birth within 12 hours of having it.. Including me!! :)
I only took castor oil as a last resort... I had been in labour for 3 days but was only dilating very slowly and my contractions would get stronger and then ease off and just kept doing that.. My midewife had already tryed a membrane sweep which helped make my contractions heaps stronger but they eased off again.....
But I wouldnt recommend taking it unless you were really over due or in and out of labour and had already tryed all the other safer methods such as... walking... spicey food... sex... etc... Oh and I WOULDNT recommend taking it if you have a weak tummy!!!!
Maybe talk to you midewife :)

My best friend tried castor oil with all three of her kids and with the last two it didnt work and only worked with the first one because she was about to have the baby anyways. She was about 2 to 3 weeks from her due date when she tried it but its nasty and doesnt really work unless the baby is ready to come anyways.

you have the internet you should do some research, the last part of development is the babies lungs... so if you force it to come too early it could have bad problems... its best to let it come natrually. do whats best for the baby, you've already been in this pregnancy this long might as well go all the way till the end

No, don't try it. It's dangerous. It can cause your baby to poop in the amniotic fluid which is not good. It gives you severe cramps and diarrhea. It's best to wait until baby is ready :)
