Does it hurt to get your water broken?

I'm 38 weeks, my due date is March 2nd. I'm scheduled to be induced the evening of February 22nd, my water will be broken the next morning, and I should have him sometime that day.

I'm just wondering if getting your water broken hurts? I have a friend who's had to do it twice, and says it really hurts. I'm not sure if it's like that for everyone though, I know that my weekly examinations sure do hurt though.

Anywho, if you guys could let me know your experiences, that would be great! Thanks!!

I had my water broken with my first baby. It didn't hurt to have it broken, it just caused my contractions to get a lot stronger after that and my DD was born just a couple of hours later!

YES! I was doing fine with no epidural until they broke my water, then I had to have one about an hour later I got it.

The actual act of having your water break is not at all painful, however contractions will intensify after your water breaks.

Mine didn't hurt at all. They showed me the tool and I was nervous but by then my epidural had kicked in and I couldn't feel a thing! The nurse monitoring me kept looking at me and commenting on how strong my contrations were and I was like... "If you say so". Once they put the epidural in, you feel NOTHING. It is the single best decision you can make your entire pregnancy. Good luck with your new baby!

I Was Induced With A pill (Forget The Name) that They put next to your cervix. Took About four Hours for my water to break And It Hurt EXTREMELY BAD! It felt Like Someone was socking downwards. But then again If you Actually have you water broken by the Dr. It could be A Totally Different Experience

My waters were accidently broken by a nurse during my examination. I didn't feel a thing not even the gush of liquid.... and I didn't have an epidural ! If you do get induced though, keep in mind the labour will probably be more painful, so defiantly discuss with your support team and medical staff your pain relief options.... I never did and I was in so much pain I kept blacking out, by the time I was physically able to ask for the epidural it was too late. Im going to ask for the epidural the second I find out im pregnant next time.... just to make sure they have plenty of time to get it ready for me !!!

Nope! I just had it done in Sept and it was just a slight pressure and then a trickle of water. Contractions will come a lot more frequently and stronger afterwards but it will be nothing if you are using pain meds or epidural. If I were you I wouldn't sweat the pain cause no matter what happens you will forget about it as soon as you have your new baby in your arms. Get an epidural though!! LOL

Good Luck and congrats!

My water broke spontaneously with my first baby and it was broken by a doctor in the hospital with both of my other 2 children. It didn't hurt either time, but let me tell you, the contractions certainly picked up in intensity, pain and frequency as soon as my water was broken!

Honestly and truthfully, I think that it is different for every woman. Also though, I think it has a lot to do with the doctor that you have as well.

It doesn't hurt- did your friend have any other problems? I personally had to have my water broke and briefly worked as a labor and delivery nurse so witnessed numerous patients who had their water broke and never had any complaint of pain. I might suggest having your friend get checked out and no worries I'm sure you'll do fine. Congrats and relax I've had two children completely free of pain meds and it isn't really as bad as alot of women make it sound.

No it definitly does not hurt , what does hurt is the fact that after breaking your water your contractions get stronger and more intense. But trust me after your contractions get going having your water broken will be the least of your worrie. Good luck and enjoy your little one !

I was also induced. I chose not to have the epidural and honestly, the breaking of my water felt more like a relief. It took so much pressure off of my abdomen. I had an awesome labor and wouldn't change a thing! Congratulations on your little bundle!

I had both my pregnancies were over due, So they induced labor they broke my water and I never felt a thing. When they broke the water it was like having a water balloon broke the water gushes and is warm. The labor is not all that bad either. Just remember that you are giving life and in the end it is all worth it. Every pregnancy is different not one is the same. But the out come is precious and you will forget all about the labor after you see your little bundle of Joy.. Good Luck and hope all goes well for You.. Just keep in mind your first its always scarey not knowing what to expect but Im sure you will do fine..

I was in so much pain, when I was in the hospital with my one and only child. My doc told me he was gonna break it, just to let me know what he was doing. It was painless. I'm not sure if I had the epidural before or after he broke my water, but I couldn't feel anything. That's the easy part. Are you getting drugs for the pain?? Never mind, I see you are after reading more responses

I went in the morning to be induced and within 2 hours they broke my water and contractions started. I dont remember it hurting when they broke my water though. It was just a lil pressure then a warm rush of fluid between my legs. Nothing to worry about.

i was induced and i thought it did hurt a lil but i dont no if it was cuz i had a contraction at the same time or wat but it was that painful and its over in a split second. good luck with your labor you only have 3 more days to go!!! but i heard being induced hurts more, the contractions hard stronger but i got thru it but ended up with an epidural but it was worth it all.

I got my water broken way before i even had my epidural and it didnt hurt one bit. The thing they put in you to pop it did feel a little awkward but no pain what so ever. It feels less uncomfortable than your weekly exams do (atleast mine did). I say congrats on havin the baby and everything will be fine. The least thing you need to be worrying about is having your water broke. Im sure everything will be fine.

i was induced also & had my water broken..them breaking the water doesnt hurt at all, but it makes your contractions worse, just get the epidural & youll be fine, the epidural works wonders for contractions lol

i dont think it hurts -- the labor itself is more painful - and if you go really long labor - you get what is called dry labor/delivery - my mom had that and she said it was horrible. I never let them break my water, i dont care to have it done - i worry about bacteria getting in there, and until it breaks on its own, it shouldnt be messed with at all. Induction i know is different though -- getting it popped doesnt hurt - but the labor/delivery will be more.

Good luck! I wish you the best!

No it doesn't hurt but if you have the option, ask to let it break on its own because once its broken the contractions hurt so much worse.....

Getting your water broken but being induced makes the contactions hurt a lot worse and they some faster and last a lil longer!

I had to have my water broken bc I was two weeks late. It doesnt hurt at all, you dont even feel it until you feel your water. It takes about 2 seconds and it is done. Good Luck!!! You'll do great!!

Congrats!!!! I am so happy for you! It feels like such a long wait. I had my water broke and it didn't hurt just felt a little uncomfortable. Like someone else said though get ready to feel like you are peeing all over yourself. I think that was the worst part of it for me! lol. I ended up having a c-section so I didn't go through many of the contractions. Although they do get worse after it is broken. Get ready for your little bundle of joy and you will make it through the rest... it is all worth it!

I had my epidural after they broke my water. Actually for me the whole experience went so fast that I have a hard time remembering some of it.

I had my waters broken when I had my first son and it didn't hurt. I found that the most painful thing about the whole experience were the contractions. The pain is so bad, it's not something you can imagine until you go through it. But it's worth it in the end :) Good luck and enjoy the new addition to your family.
