Usually what happens is the doctor gives you a local anesthetic to numb the area before doing the epidural.

I personally will not do a epidural again. When i was in labor I was dealing with the contradictions pretty good but decided to do the epidural anyways well yea it was hard staying still with contradictions going on but i had my daughters dad steading me but right when they put the needle in the doctor hit one of my nerves which made me have pain shot through my whole back and legs (VERY PAINFUL) and now 2 years later i still go numb on my left side and I'm 100 % sure its from the epidural. But everyone is so different just some people have it worse then others...I would have proably been better with laughing gas if they were allowed to give it

HI, I also wanted a normal birth with a epidural, and ended up in having ceaser. The epidural was not as sore as labour pains, and you don't care at take point because you know it will help die contractions. I'm not a needle fan at all. good luck.

I found the most scary thing about the Epi, was the needle.. I hate needles.. But to me, a tiny pinch & then nothing but heaven.. Only had it with my first because I didn't know I was in labour and had laboured over a week. My daughter became distressed and my blood pressure shot up.. So emergency C-section her we come! !

no the epidural doesnt hurt you dont feel it but they give you a pain number before they put it in but the only bad thing is you have to stay really still for it otherwise the needle can get broken off in your back! i remember i had a contraction the same time they put it in i had to stay still, it was hard lol

The local numbing just feels like a little bee sing. Then the epidural going is is no big deal. You don't hardly feel anything, and what you DO feel doesn't hurt. You can just tell that someone is touching your back. Once the medication starts be administered, you'll be so very glad that you did it. I had to have an emergency C-section as well, but since I had the epidural already administered, it made the transition for surgery very easy. They just issued the medication thru the epidural cord :) Good luck, and hopefully it all works out well for you. The epidural is a wonderful thing. :)

I think I had the ideal epidural experience. I got it at 4 1/2 cm and it didn't hurt at all!!! And then I rested for an hour and was at 10 and then I pushed my baby out in 40 minutes (not bad for a first). And I could feel everything in terms of pressure and pushing and I even felt contractions, but felt no pain. It was great. I know this is not everyone's experience, but it was mine. :)

I was in labour for 26hours.. the last 3 hours i can't stand the pain anymore and decided to take the epidural, i don't feel anything. After the epidural, i ended up having an emergency c-section. I was awake during the operation.

hi, im a mother of three, two of which were c-sections. i had my last child 5 months ago, i tried to go natural, but it didnt happen my waters broke contractions started then just stoped so once again, c-section. the epidural is good.. u will most deffently feel the numbing going in and the epidural u will feel pushing and the pulling as they are inserting it into ur spine. My second was c-section and i didnt feel anything till after it wore off, but my last the epidural wore off thro my operation and i starrted to feel everthing so i was dosed up wit all sorts of drugs. hope that helps you!

I wanted to add to my previous post. It does not hurt at all when they put the epidural in and it does help if the labor pains are too much to handle. Because everyone handles pain differently and I'm one of those people that cannot handle pain. And because I had no problems during or after my first 2 deliveries so I decided to have it with my third. And I've been dealing with mind blowing pain in my back, at the site of the injection, ever since. The one difference is I had the same Anesthesiologist with my first 2 delivers. But I had a different and very nervous Anesthesiologist this time. So keep an eye out for that if you decide to have the Epidural. I wish I had said something, because now my life is affected by his lack of.

I had an epidural with my first 2 pregnancies and had no problem with it. But with my last pregnacy, my daughter, I have had so much back and chest pain after having the epidural. I'm not trying to scare you, but if I can save you from experincing the pain that I am suffering with then I want to be honest. If you do not have to have it then don't. The pain is so bad I want to cry every second. I really regret getting the epidural. I think I would have rather gone through the pain of labor for the short time it takes to deliver. And I say short time because I rather have pain for the time it takes to deliver than have this pain for the rest of my life. I had my Daughter on April 9th and from that day on I have had such bad pain in my back that it radats to my chest. And I have hospitalized for it. For 4 months straight I have had this severe pain. Please don't get it unless you have to. Please!

The epidural was the best thing that ever happened to me. They numb you with tiny (I mean it when I say tiny!) needles before they give you the epidural. You will want one by that time and you would take a million needles to make the pain subside. Use your own judgement, but in my opinion you shouldn't put yourself through sooooo much pain that you are too worn out from the labor to enjoy your new little one.

I have had the epidural twice and honestly by the time you need it will feel better then the pain you are already in. Its not that bad just a quick prick and some pressure it almost feels like a tickle down your spin to me. Not as bad as its made out to be its just a one two three your done what the heck was I worried about thing.

Mine was a breeze, I felt a little uncomfortable when being administered and then I was in heaven, until it wore off 12 hours later ;) But that wasnt too bad either. They probably won't let you get out of bed once it's administered, so you gotta pee in a pan! The anesth (sp) who gave me mine was awesome and I proposed to him twice.

[deleted account]

I had a schedule c-section and I was very afriad of the epidural because of all the horrible stories I have heard. But once I was in there it didnt hurt. To me it felt like any other pinch of the needle. I dont know if it was the excited or nerves knowing that in a few minutes my bundle of joy would be with us.

all i felt was a little poke it wasnt really that bad at all.... the pain of labor is much worse...i basically just acted as a rag doll when i leaned on my husband... if your shorter then 5ft (im 4'11) it does take a little more time because your bones are closer together just remember to relax as much as possible and it will be over before you know it

Elaine - posted on 08/09/2009

Just relax, I know that sounds rediculous but if you just focus on relaxing and think well this will be better than labour pains you will not feel to much! I had an epidural after over a day in labour, I can honestly say I did not even flinch. Things are only as bad as you let them be!

i had an epidural with my son and honestly, it was the least painful thing of the entire labor and delivery. i was in labor for 17 hours and the epidural saved my life, seriously! I would have been so uncomfortable without it. it's a very small pinch, if that.

Teressa - posted on 08/09/2009

The epidural will only hurt for a quick second- then it will feel like warm butter running down your veins. With my first child I had a 35 hr labor- but only 5 hours that were extremely painful. I delivered vaginally, did not have an epidural, & was exhausted afterwards. I looked like crap in all my pictures. Then, with my twins I elected to get the epidural and it was sooo worth it. I had more energy, a shorter labor, and zero complications. They were also delivered vaginally with no problems. Just know the risk going into it and tell your husband/spouse what your plan is ahead of time so he can back you up when you're too tired to stick up for yourself.

First no it really doesn't. It isn't even a thought when you are having mad contractions! GET THE DRUGS!!!

It all depends on who's doing it really. Everyone is different. My first one didn't hurt. My second one hurt but my third one oh my goodness. That person hit a nerve and my leg kicked and then I was blamed for not sitting still. Once its done you forget all about it. At least I do. I'd still get it again though.

Everyone is different. I know mine was completely painless. now, I had been given Demerol twice b4 i had the epidural b/c I wanted to try a few different methods b4 going for the full epidural. But I had a very good anesthesiologist and he got it on the first try with no problems. I am plus sized, mind you, and it is even harder to get an epidural in the first time with a larger person, KWIM? I don't think you will have any problems. Also,k they can wait til a contraction so that you focus more on the pain of the contraction instead of the needle. But like I said, I don't even remember feeling any of that. Good luck!

I got the epidural with both of my children and I have to say that both times I didn't feel it at all. You need to figure that you are in labor and that pain alone is sometimes not bearable so you are so fucused on your labor pain that you don't even notice the needle. Honestly. The first labor hurt so much that when I got pregnant with my second I swore I was going to get the epidural right away even if I wasn't feeling any pain and I did just that and I still didn't feel the needle. The trick is to never look at the needle. They freak me out too. Don't look at whats going on and you will not notice it I swear. The most it will feel like is alittle burning sensation. Nothing to be scared of. Labor is a beautiful thing and this medication allows you to be there fully for the whole thing.
