Does the sound of running water really calm babies down?

Calmer babies... static tv, static radio, noisy fan, humming.

If you have yet to have your baby or he/she is still just a newborn, I highly recommend you read the book, "Happiest Baby on the Block".

it actually does work sometimes, yeah. Same with a vacuum or the radio. Any kind of white noise, really.

Running water is white noise and different forms of white noise can be soothing to an infant. You can buy white noise machines, some people use a radio set on static...for the first couple months my son slept best in his bassinet in the kitchen with the range hood fan on full blast. The reason white noise is soothing to them is because there is constant white noise in the womb and it is 80-90 decibels (that's louder than a vacuum).
