i have three daughters and i got all of their ears pierced at four months old. they were in shot at the initial poke and all three cried for a second, but once i picked them up they were fine. it's just like getting a shot for them and you know they get one about every other month until they are two years old. but whatever age you decide is fine whether you do it at four months or four years.

hey- i know i had my ears pierced as an infant but i read up on it and now they suggest you wait until they have had their tetnus shots. that and you wanna watch to see if your child tugs or pulls their ears while they are tired or during temper tantrums

i got my daughters done the day she turn six months and she did fine. i think it is better when they are younger cuz they dn't know what is coming they don't touch them alot it is easier to clean them cuz they don't cry or whine or run away. my friend has a three year old that got hers done cuz she wanted them and she crys when she goes to clean them or change them

I really think its a question parents hav to answer themselves. Some kids do fine, but my mother had hers done when she was a little girl and they got ripped out, and a friend of mine had hers pierced when she was a baby and they got ripped out in her crib from catching on her blanket. it also leaves a scar on your ears. just something to think about

you should do it when they're young and dont really know pain. just a little pinch and they are over it. waiting to long might cause her to be traumatized my it, as some kids are. my daughter got hers done when she was 3 months. she doesn't even know they are there.

You don't think there is anything wrong with putting a small baby through un-nessercary pain? Just so she can put a bit of silver or gold through her ears? No one has been rude to whoever posted this it's just it's a very debatable subject and people have varied opinions on it! We are completley intitled to our opinions and if we feel the need to express it we will. This is what the site is all about communication between mothers all over the world and people are bound to agree and disagree on certain things.. thats just human nature!

my origianl post has been removed i think, but i just wanted to say that i wasnt trying to attack any ones parenting skills, i just dont undersatnd why people would do it? that is only my opion and every one is entitled to their own.

to say that every little girl wants their ears pierced simply isnt true. my sister is 16 and does not want her ears pierced. luckily my parents belive that when we are old enough we should make the decission our selves, and she has chosen not to. If they had got them done as a baby they would have taken that chioce away from her.

i CHOSE to get mine done when i was 11 and able to totaly understand what was involved. It didnt hurt much, i never got an infection and my holes are even. I even wnet back again and again and i have my ears pierced 4 times so i hardly think that it was traumatic because i was older.

My point was that i dont belive that we should take that chioce away from our children because we think that it looks cute.

im sorry if i offended any one, i forgot that americans are a bit more up tight than us brits!!

lol, that was a joke by the way.

Those ladies that have said that they think it's sick and don't know how we could do that to our babies, everyone is entitled to there own opinion, but they are our babies and we can do what ever we want who are you to question our parenting. Every lil girl wants there ears pierced. So most parents like to get them done early and out of the way so that they don't remember and it doesn't HURT as much when they are younger.

Controversial I know. I did my daughter's at 4months which was great - easily soothed (no drama's at all) and she didn't pull or get infected or anything

I think your all sick whoever thinks its "OK" to put a hole in a child ear is mad, a child cannot make his/her own opinions. They may look lovely, but why would you want your child/baby to be in pain??? I always comment when i see it in public its cruel and should not be aloud!!!

I personally had my daughter's ears done @ 7 months of age AFTER consulting with her plastic surgeon.who by the way said there is nothing wrong with getting them done! ( She saw the surgeon for a skin tag if you are wondering.) The doc said it was better to get them done when she was younger as she would not play with them like she would have if she were older and ther would be no memories of the pain. My little girl is now 17 months old and has never touched her earrings at all! Please bear in mind having her ears pierced is a responsibility for YOU to take care of them. My daughter only cried for mabye 30 seconds. but she has dealt with more pain than that in her life. she had surgery on her head @ 15 months and that was a necessity would I feel bad about getting that done ? No ! Do I feel bad about getting her ears done ? No Because if she does not want them when she is older she can always take them out!

Hey, I got my daughter's done when she was 4 months old I had my done around 6 months and I wanted to get my daughters done round the same time so that she wouldn't play with them and that she wouldn't remembered what it felt like cause I don't remember. Before I took her in I numbed her ear lobes bout 30 mins prier and just before they where done I gave her a dose of panadol she didn't cry or anything didn't even know what had just happened.

I am a firm believer that when your daughter is older as in elementry school or so its great to take them to get it done if thats what they want!! I loved it when I was old enough to get my ears pierced my mom and I went!!! I remember it so well it was just so fun!!!!! I don't really like it when peopel get it done on babies.... well i don't understand it should I say!!!!!

I don't agree with babies with peirced ears. I think it looks fairly neddy (americans would say trailer trash) and I also don't think it would be pleasant. I know I can't sleep in earrings unless they are closed hoop ones and I wouldn't think a young child would find it comfortable either. I was 7 and my sister was 9 before we got ours done, I only got mine younger as my gran was sick of me asking for ears like my sister. My little girl will definetly be at least 7 before she gets hers done

I just think that children should be old enough to take care of the piercings themselves, and the child should actually want it done (which would actually help with them caring for the piercing). My mom pierced my ears when I was 15 months and now they're HUGE holes because they're so old. In HS I even tried to close them up but since they're so old they actually will not close. I kind of wish I'd had a choice.

Hi Tameka, I use to pierce ears for all kinds of ages. The company would prefer parents did piercings after 3 months old, for certain precautions. But there are other places where they do younger than 3 months.

I've worked at a Claire's and yes, the training is minimal. They are supposed to wipe the gun down with an alcohol pad before each use. I hated doing piercings and I avoided them at all costs. If you do go there I would ask how long the employee has been working/piercing.

Personally, I will not get my daughter's done until she's old enough to ask for it, but it's important to remember that for some cultures it's tradition to get their ears pierced as an infant.

I'm waiting until she's old enough to ask for them & understand how to take care of them! I don't want her taking them out and putting them in her mouth and choking or anything if I get it done when she's to young...

I agree 100% with Ashley Camden - no matter who you are, nobody should ever get their ears pierced by a gun... always avoid the ear piercing at Claire's and the little kiosks at the mall. I'm convinced that the training for these employees is very minimal, and getting piercings by a professional piercer is much safer and less likely to be infected. Piercing guns work by swiftly pushing a sharp-ended stud through the lobe, which (for those of you with ear piercings done by guns can probably feel) leaves a hard 'ball' of compressed skin surrounding the piercing, and can lead to several different problems including multiple infections, keloids, etc. A professional piercer however, typically uses a hollow needle, so when the needle is pushed through the skin it removes a small portion of the skin, leaving a hole for the jewelry. This allows for easier and faster healing, reduces risk of problems with the piercing itself, and is also far more sanitary than piercing guns. Go to piercing pagoda and sure they use a different pair or earrings for each customer and wipe your ear lobes with alcohol and wear gloves.... but have you ever seen them clean the gun itself? Imagine if a tiny squirt of someone's blood made it onto that gun and now the gun is being loaded with new jewelry for you... would you take that risk? I find it disgusting, personally.

When they are old enough to ask for it, and when a professional body piercer will do it... not in the mall by gun.

My niece however got hers when she was 3 months and she still has hers and she is 21 months now. I would suggest getting them done when they are young or just wait till they ask.

So to Tameka I live in Pennsylvania and at our Mall (the piercing pagoda) the baby has to be 2 months old..... I just got my daughters done the other day and she is almost 4 months..... hope this is helpful!!!

Does she really need her ears pierced? Is it a nessercary requirement for a childs development? I don't personally think its something you should do, I think she should have the decision for herself and be able to choose wether she wants her ears pierced or not. I just think it's putting a child through un-nessercary pain. And even though my mother pierced mine when I was a baby as they did back then I have always associated it with being old fashioned. I think maybe you should let her decide, quite frankly it breaks my heart hearing my son cry taking him for injections so which are nessecary, I would never ever put him through it if it wasn't beneficial for his health!

I think its disgusting having your babys ears pierced, what a cruel thing to do! What on earth does your baby get out of it? unneccesary pain and confusion as to what is happening to her!? The poor little things! People who have their babys ears pierced are simply doing it for themselves for cosmetic reasons, your babys are not dolls girls, they are little lives who shouldnt be put through that kind of pain just because you want them to look good! Some of you need to question the real reason why you ad your babies, co'mon girls, think about what you're doing!!!!!!!!!!

I had my little one's done at 3 and half months. I had a warm bottle ready for when they finished. I had both ears done at the same time so they would be even and she would get over it faster. I do recommend that you use the ones they have done with the locking backs instead of the screw backs they are very diffecult to get off so she can not pull them off. It is a debate for every one weather it is a good idea or not that is one of the many decissions a mother makes for her child and only a parent knows what they want for there child.
