EPIDURALS GONE WRONG

Hi i had an epidural with my baby. All was ok until i went home with massive headaches. I had to be readmitted 9 days after i gave birth due to leaking spinal fluid. Which basically when you are lying down your fluid is fine so your are ok but once you stand or sit up all the fluid around your brain doesn't go back up it leaks out therefore you end up with massive headaches (dehydration, hangover type headaches) the only way to relieve this is to lay down and instatnly it goes. They fix this by a blood patch which is another epidural into your back but instead of pain relief your back is injected with your own blood, no pain relief it is extrememly painful. You lay down for 6hours after and then your fixed. Has anyone else had this done.

I had an epidural with my son too and experience the worst, most painful headache ever even after blood patch. I had to lie in bed flat for two weeks after the delivery, i couldn't breastfeed my son because of it. i had a sore lower back discomfort for almost 3 years. I visited my mom back in China after my son turned to 1, and she was freaked out to see a big bruise was still shown on my lower back where the epidural was injected. I started to do yoga to stretch my lower back, hip these areas half a year ago, and now i am totally fine. I won't have an epidural if i have another kid in future.

I had an epidural headache too - they couldn't perform the blood patch on me so I had to wait for it to heal on it's own (took 12 weeks) and in the mean time i drank 2x cans of redbulls every other day as they kept the symptoms at bay (I believe the high dose of caffeine replenishes the spinal fluid) - but not a good idea to drink all that caffeine and breast feed so it's a tough choice! Good luck if anyone is reading this that is suffering from a CSF leak as it's very scary and I know how you feel but fingers crossed you will either be fixed through a blood patch or natural healing. I still have tinnitus which was another of my symptoms but it's bearable compared to the headaches!

I had epidurals with both of my kids (and I wouldn't have had it any other way to be honest) and I didn't have the headaches or spinal fluid but I was so itchy in the area for weeks... especially after my second child.

I have heard of those complications though; the anesthesiologist had warned me that there was a small possibility of complications.

i too have had back pain from the epidural and my son is 4 1/2 now! i just figured it was all apart of the big breasted back pains as i am heavy chested! but i had never experienced it before! i didnt click to it til after a couple of months that its from the epidural so i dont want another one!

I know exactly what you are talking about!!!   I was young when I had my first child, so the doctor talked me into the epidural, saying it would be easier for me because of my age.  I told him I didn't care as long as I didn't have pain... :)  The bad thing was that I did have pain during the delivery and well after.  I too went home after having my son and ended up being readmitted to the hospital, only I was there for about 2 1/2 weeks.  I first went to the ER and had a blood patch, it didn't take and I ended up in the hospital where I had 2 more blood patches.  I not only had the headaches, but everytime I would stand or even sit up, I would vomit.  This continued even after they sent me home from the hospital.  I am so thankful that my mom was there for me to help with my son.  She was his mother the first 3 months of his life, I nursed him, but she had to burp, change, bath and rock him.  I didn't get an epidural again until my last child 6 years ago.  That was only because it was my last resort. I am glad to say that I am now finished and I am glad to be able to share my story, like you, to better help others.  I glad you are well and hope you have a great year.  :)

I had the same thing with the leaking spinal fluid!!! THe most painful headaches i have ever experianced!!! I would NREVER recomend anyone to have an epidural the doctors make it sound so fine and easy but things can go wrong as u and i both know!!! This is the only thing stop[ping me from having another baby!!!! I feel your pain :)

Wow someone who has had the same thing aparently it is uncommon but it happens we are the unlucky few. Yes the headaches are unreal you remember when you used to whinge about a headache till you have epidural headaches. The doctors told me they won't ever touch my spine again, i want another but without any painrelief i'm unsure as i had to be rushed for an emergency c-section with my first which isn't a good chance i won't with my second and being knocked out for one is so scary. Let me know if you go ahead with a second, all luck to you.

Honestly that is one reason I did a home birth. I didn't want to be tempted with drugs, because I have heard of so many situations in which something went wrong!

I have had 2 epidurals and always have back aches. My gynae recommended calcium suppliments and they help a lot.
