Yep, Tyrae is right. It's obvious what it is because it looks like (sorry this is gross) snot with some blood mixed in it. It usually means labor is near, but near could be a few weeks, days or hours lol. I know it sounds weird, but when you're in labor you will know. Even if you have few false alarms first once you go into labor you will think "oh, this is it!" If you're ever in doubt you can call your doctor.

I had what felt like period cramps and back ache for hours. I had a ruptured membrane, not a "breaking" of my waters. If you are unsure, just ring the hospital, thats what i did because i asked my mum and she had no idea as she was induced with me and my brother and sister.

the mucous plug is the plug your body makes in your cervix to stop infections and other things from getting up into your uterus and hurting the baby.

It's different for everyone. Some moms have no signs until all of a sudden their water breaks or contractions start. I lost my mucous plug at 37 weeks. I felt Braxton Hicks contractions the whole third trimester, but they became more intense around 36-37 weeks. When I was checked I was starting to dilate and thin out. The night before my due date my water broke. So that was obvious :). We went to the hospital and my daughter was born on her due date. Other early signs are baby dropping, diarrhea and pressure in the pelvis.
