Hey everybody I just wanted to let you know about some research I am a big Pit Bull advocate as well as my sister who is a Grad Student at University of Nebraska for cognitive psychology (behavioral science). They have been doing Severe bite statistics for the last year unfortunately this state is really big for Pit Bull fighting but the good news is that last year there was no bite reports from Pit Bulls there was A LOT from Terriers and Mix Breeds. They are also doing studies with the Pit Bulls at the Humane Society for behavioral studies and the Pit Bulls are doing GREAT all around regardless what they have been through they are showing AMAZING signs that they will bounce right back into a loving dog no matter what they have been through as long as you show them love. Rarely any of the Pit Bulls have any food aggression, and doing GREAT with human contact... I Love the Breed and this makes me soo happy.. I hope you all enjoy that Stats!!!!!

I have 2 female pitts, they're sisters, n they are my OVERGROWN babies, 3 years old n they still try to crawl in my lap at the same time! They are an EXCELLENT breed, their great with kids, and wonderful guard dogs. I never have to worry about anyone harming my daughter when they are around. It's sucks they have a bad rep, but that blame goes to the idiots that train them to be that way!

Lesley, screw the ignorance. I"ve found that people who are breed-haters are pretty much the same as racists. They cling to their ignorance with a kind of desperation, almost. They will dredge up statistics blindly from pseudo-science studies and wield them like a weapon, never realizing they are holding onto a rubber chicken. Exactly they way people will pull up crime statistics, prison population density, and unemployment rates to try to degrade African-Americans, never taking into account actual population densities, socio-economic factors, or education availabily. People like that feed off their own ignornce and feel threatened when confronted by anything that challenges that defining trait in themselves. Those kind of people are beyond help and don't deserve your time.

I agree that they tend to be slightly different dogs but the shelter I got him from ONLY uses AKC breed identifiers, hence the AmStaff name. Also, they avoid the term pit bull at all costs in paperwork as it makes it harder to get insurance. It also scares some people when they see it on the kennel and makes them less adoptable. Hence why I said that he was hiding under the name.

Megan Kitchenq - What a wonderful story. Pitbulls were once the "American Dog" and to look at old posters you will see them in many endearing photos/paintings with children. However I would like to point out that while an Am. Staf Terrier and a pitbull are similar (in that they are both bull terrier breeds) they are remarkably different. As a professional dog trainer, I can attest to coming into contact with a number of dogs from BOTH breeds that I have greatly enjoyed working with however I also encourage owners to understand their breed of dog as much as possible. If you would enjoy it I have attatched a link that you might find helpful in understanding your AmStaf a bit more. http://www.bulldoginformation.com/bull-a...

I am sooo glad to hear (read) that. me and my husband just bought 2 pit bull puppies. one is 11 weeks old, and the other is 7 weeks old (his mommy passed) these were kind of worrying my husband, becuz of the rep that pit bulls have, but i finally got him to the point of "it's not bad dogs, it's bad OWNERS" but after doing my own research, i found that pits are an AMAZING family pet, and they are not likely to be aggrivated by kids, as long as they are raised with the kids, and they are VERY loyal to family.

Once i got attacked by a bunny rabbit - but thats a story for another time and post. but it is true :-)

So yes i do agree that p/bulls are being publicized, but i also agree with Lorraine, that i wont leave my child with a dog, not just a p/bull, but any dog - so i agree with both of you.

Have anyone ever been bitten by a puppy, and i'm not talking about when a puppy bites you accidently, but when the puppy is so upset and it takes a bit to your face.... happend to me when i was 5 yrs old and i can still remember it - the breed was a pickeneese - she bit me on my chin, but the funny thing is she did not know how to bite properly, as she did not let go - she just hanged there on my chin. now when i think of it, it is quite funny, but when i was 5 - NOT THAT FUNNY :-(

I just wanted to add that our pit bull (who we rescued) is very human like or what not. He hates his nails being cut, if we take out the nail clippers (the dog nail clippers of course) he will run to the other room and lay w/his paws under his belly/chest w/his back to me. If I manage to cut his nails, he will sit w/his back to me for the rest of the day and ignore me. Even w/being this afraid he has never once snipped at me. He gets ouches sometimes and if I say to him "Let me see Caleb, let me see your ouchie" he will walk away w/his head down and sit w/his back to me. It is cute. He also thinks he is a cat... he lays on the back of the couch and he is a BIG boy! He is about 80lbs... Not so good for the couch.
He will bother you until you throw a blanket on the floor for him to lay on. haha.

Paige you are right any dog can be rehabilitated it sad cause most of the abuse on any dog is done towards Pit Bull's because they believe "They can take it" and they can't no animal can (including me) that was for you Peter. But honestly I don't think any dog was born "Bad" if we ever went through any of the shit that Shelter Dogs go through we would be aggressive, nasty, irritable, trust less, and on guard always!

Peter - posted on 10/15/2010

the reason you would not hear of those attacks would probably because of the p/bulls reputation.
i mean if your fiance would beat you up (God forbid), would you read about it in the papers? No.
But if OJ were to beat his wife, you would read about it, maybe a bad example, as OJ is famous.
what I'm trying to say that if you have a rep of doing something and you do it -the whole world will know, but if you don't have a rep then its a different story....

I think any dog, no matter the breed, can be violent. It all depends on how the dog is treated. Now, pit bulls are more commonly known to be aggressive, violent dogs. I believe that's mainly because so many people raise them to be attack dogs, and encourage them to be aggressive. Now, we use to own a little terrier who was the meanest little dog ever! He was abused in his previous home (we adopted him), and he would bite anyone, whether they were family or not. Over time though, he eventually became less aggressive because we were showing him respect and giving him love. So, I also think that even though a dog has been bred and raised to be aggressive, they can be rehabilitated, it just takes time and lots of love on the owners part. My good friend has a pure breed pit bull who is the happiest dog ever, he has never attempted to bite or attack anyone. So, it just goes to show that if you raise your pet right, it has less of a chance of being violent and aggressive.

Peter- I do agree w/your belief/personal opinion on not trusting the breed 100%. May I add that my brother (who lives w/a pit bull), was attacked by a friend of his Dalmatian. My brother did nothing to instigate or entice (correct spelling?) the dog and he attacked him. The father knew the dog was not "safe" to be around, told his son who is 12, to get the dog as he ran after my brother, instead of getting up off of his lazy a** and getting his own dog. My mom confronted him and I'm not sure what happened if anything. I do believe the dog attacked my brother a second time a different day... not sure why he went over there again.
My fiancee was also attacked by a dog who was not a pit bull, not for sure what breed he was attacked by. That dog took a chunk out of his neck.
My aunt was also attacked by a dog again who was not a pit bull.
A different aunt of mine, has a Cocker Spaniel and I honestly HATE that dog! I don't trust him as far as I can throw him, he growls at my daughter if she walks close to him when he doesn't want her too, I tried taking a piece of garbage that he wasn't supposed to have from him and growled and snipped at me, but my aunt just goes oh no he would never do that! In this same house they have a "chawienie" (chihuahua and wiener dog mix), who snips at my daughter when she tries to hold him. Honestly the people in my aunt's house hold should NEVER have dogs.
I just wanted to point out the number of different dogs I know of who are not pit bulls and who have attacked people, adults and children, but you never seem to hear about them. Why?!

Sarh - to set the record straight - I LOVE DOGS - my favorite breed would always be Staffie's
i am a bit prejudge-mental towards pit bulls, but my brother in law has one, and she is quite friendly. But i still don't trust the breed 100%, because 1 good pit bull does not fix all the bad experiences i had with numerous of them - certainly not with babies - now Lesley i know this might have offended you, but i was merely stating my feelings, i was not trying to attack you in any way - each person has their own opinion.

I rescued my pitbull when he was 6 weeks old, he was the runt and they were gonna use him as bait :( so sad. When I got him he didn't even know how to walk yet, it was so cute! When I got pregnant I have to admit I was worried because he was only 3 and I thought he would be jealous. My dad was always lecturing me that I needed to keep the baby away from him. It really couldn't be further from the truth. He just loves my daughter so much and gives her 100 kisses a day. She loves him too. Sad thing is that someone in my neighborhood called animal control on us. We had to go to court and pay a fine because he wasn't tattooed. Where I live (right by Detroit) we have to have them tattooed. I didn't want to because I felt so bad doing it. I refused to tattoo him but my boyfriend took him so they wouldn't take him from us and put him down at the humane society :( Every time I see his tattoo I think of how unfair it is that he had to get that just because of the breed he is. My parents have a blue tick coon hound and she has actually been jealous of my daughter and snapped at her a few times, but she didn't have to go through the pain of getting a tattoo. :(

I do agree that not ALL pit bulls are safe, obviously there is proof of that, but that is no reason to hold a grudge or what not against the rest of pit bulls. It HONESTLY all depends on how the dog was raised and trained. People make pit bulls mean, they are not born that way. I know MANY pit bulls who are safe for my children to be around. I may be a young mother, but that does not make me immature or make me less knowledgeable about the possibilities in which could happen at any second.

I have a yellow lab at home. My friend owns a pit bull mix. Our lab will barely let our son pet him or anything. He usually gets up and walks away and doesn't want much to do with him. Our friend's pit is amazing with him. My son has crawled over top of him, played with his ears, petted him, poked his nose...whatever he feels like. The dog enjoys every second of attention and has fallen asleep while being pulled and played with lol It is absolutely how a dog is brought up. (And yes I agree that NO dog should be left alone with a baby regardless of breed)
