Gas troubles....

my daughter was the same she went from similac iron.(what they gave her when she was born) to similac soy ( did not help) to similac alimentum. it was a god sent i saw a difference in the first 2 days! dr recommended it cause i was bring her in all the time or calling the dr 24/7. but it worked. it's pricey tho 26.00 dollars a can!!!!

My daughter had really bad gas and would NEVER burp until her entire bottle was finished no matter how hard I tried. I was told by the Dr. the Mylicon does not help with gas bubbles that are already in her tummy, it only keeps new ones from forming. Therefore all the pain doesn't go away. He ended up putting her on a prescription that dissolves all bubbles, talk to her Dr. though b/c they are there to help no question is dumb even if you think it's insignificant!

I would say try the mylicon...it's great stuff, and it's not harsh, you can even put it in her bottle when she is feeding with your hubby. Or just give it to her right before you feed. I promise if it's gas, it will make her feel better!

Before giving medications or other things you're not familiar with try safe and natural chiropractic! Chiropractic is not just for bad backs and sore necks! There are many doctors of chiropractic that have special training with the pediatric population too! It is safe and worth a try! It chiropractic doesn't help then you always have the more invasive options of medications etc to try.... go natural first!

We had the same exact problem with my daughter when we were using both breast milk and formula. Mylicon helped, as did switching to Enfimil (or Wal-Mart store brand) Gentle-ease formula. We really love it. Also, as soon as we stopped brest feeding and exclusively formula fed the gassiness stopped. I think it was hard on her stomach trying to figure out which to digest. Good luck!

try infacol, it really helped my baby, i dont like getting her stuff, but when she is gassy and in pain, i think its the right thing to do.

I had two windy babies and the best thing I found for it was to give 1ml of water before a feed.... it was given by eye dropper while they were young, also if she is having formula try a different one as this could cause problems as well. Infacol by the way is a wind pain syrup it helps to relieve wind pain. It is an Australian product.

To help with gas, I give my daughter peppermint water. Try and find Metromint water (http://www.metromint.com/), warm it up and pop it in her mouth. If you can't find the water, look for peppermint essence and put a few drops in water. Peppermint is great for soothing stomach pains from nausea and gas, thus is good for treating colic. Its also good for helping with acne, it helped my little Lorelei's baby acne go down considerably! Also (again), it can be used to help mouth thrush. Its a cure all! I really like the Metromint water because then I don't have to hunt down the peppermint essence!

The burping often and the infant Mylicon are good suggestions, but also watch what you eat. You can pass the gasyness (for lack of a better word) through your breast milk. My son got real gassy when I had beans, broccoli, chili, cabbage, or anything that can make you gassy.
And it is normal for infants to go several days without a BM and be fine. I got worried with my #1 cause he hadn't pooped in a week. The Dr said that as long as he was peeing regularly, everything was ok. After all, they are on an all liquid diet.

Have you asked the dr about acid reflex? My son is the same way and he has acid reflex . They put him on meds and it has helped. He still spitts up but it is only once a day not after all feeding. Good luck.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.... I started a feeding/sleep/diaper log. On top of the gas/uncomfortable feedings and monitoring her through out the night and today. I have noticed that she didn't have BM at all yesterday.... she finally had a BM today: which her symptoms were much better today.... this could be the cause for her discomfort/gas yesterday. The grunting and struggling made me think the tensing up was more upper gas and not lower. She was much better today. Of course this was because my husband and I took our 17 month old into NYC to see the Christmas tree and check out FAO. Emma stayed with our aunt. It is a combination of issues. Not burping enough... she is really tough to burp. and not having regular BM's... I will keep the feeding/sleep/diaper log for a few days to see what and when i notice her discomfort.



Thank you all again for responding... i think i was at my witts end yesterday.. beyond sleep deprived and running on fumes.

BTW. Sarah Marsh... what is Infacol and how do you use it? is it the same as mylecon?

I agree about the burping regularly during feedings. My boy spat up alot but once I started burping him a few times during feedings it seemed to settle down. I also gave him (and still give him) Infacol which basically makes all the little bubbles form one big one and is easier to get out of the little tummy. Don't know if they have that sort of thing in U.S.

Have you tried Mylicon? I use it in every bottle I give my daughter and it has helped a bunch! You may also want to talk to your doctor about trying a different formula. I know Similac makes a formula specially designed to help cut down on spit up, so it may work for you. Hope that helps!

I'd try burping her more often during feedings. It's no fun stopping her while she's eating, especially when you're nursing, but if you get that air out often enough it might help. Good luck!
