Im 31 weeks pregnant with my second child and was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I did not have it with my first child.
Just wondering about other moms that have dealt with this & what was your experience like? Delivery? Babies health & weight? Did you have diabetes after your pregnancy? What kind of things were you able to eat? Etc.

Hi Melody,
I had it with my son. I was diagnosed early with it and the last few weeks I had to go to the drs weekly for a non-stress test and also have a weekly ultrasound to monitor his growth and ESTIMATED weight. I was lucky and was able to control mine simply with my diet and did not need medications. I was very cautious about eating things high in carbs. I ate very little grains and when I did eat them I made sure they were whole wheat. I ate alot of non-starchy veggies, cheeses, meats, some of the less sugary fruits. I didn't drink fruit juice because even %100 percent juice is very high is sugars. However, if there was something I really wanted I did have it but tried to be sure it was in moderation. A lot of it is trial and error to see what effects your blood sugar and what doesn't. For example, I couldn't look at peanut butter without my blood sugar sky rocketing yet chocolate had hardly any impact on mine at all. Lynn mentioned she couldn't eat ice cream but had fruit smoothies and with me ice cream didn't have as much of an impact on my sugar as a fruit smoothie would have. Also, foods with a high fiber content are absorbed more evenly and slowly and impact your sugar less. I was scheduled to be induced with my son at approx 39 wks bc they didn't want me to go full term and have him be huge. The day I was scheduled to go to the hospital I woke up in the wee hrs of the morning and my water had broke. I did end up having a c-section but that was due to lack of progress. I had an excellent experience though and would have another c-section in a heart beat. My son was perfectly healthy and weighed 7 lbs 15 ounces. It did go away after I delivered but I have a long family history of it so my chances of it staying gone are not great. Sorry for writing a book! I had it with my first and second, but not with my third. I had to watch what I ate, but after the deliveries it went away! The babies had normal birth weights and both deiveries went great. I ate alot of fruits and veggies. I became addicted to fruit smoothies because I couldn't have ice cream! I hope this helps, if you have any questions let me know!
