Getting too much air

My baby has been given only breast milk, but since she was 3 weeks old I have started giving her pumped milk in a bottle whenever I have to be away or am out with her in public. She hasn't rejected any bottle I have given her, but I've noticed and so have others who have fed her that she has trouble latching on to bottles and so she gets in a lot of air through the corners of her mouth because her latch is always breaking. She spits up badly bc she has reflux as well and we are having trouble getting her to gain weight so it is especially important to keep as much milk in her as possible. The spitting up is much less significant when I am able to nurse her. I have only given her bottles with a wide base nipple as that is what I've always heard was best for breast fed babies. I've given her Dr. Brown's wide neck bottles, Avent, Nuk and Playtex Nursers. She has difficulty latching onto all of these nipples. Any advice?????

Well there's two things you could do. One of them is see if you could find a smaller nipple, it might also mean smaller bottle, one that is slow flow. Took me forever to find bottles that Autumn liked. It could also be that she might need a larger nipple, still slow flow though, it could remind her more of your nipple. The other thing I suggest is when you put the bottle in her mouth twist it slightly back and forth until her lips flange out, like when she nurses, it's slightly more difficult for babies to get a good latch when on the bottle for a while. Autumn would get LOTS of gas but it never bothered her, she was hard to burp but she farted a lot lol ^.^::, it's all trial and error. But she needs you to just lightly twist the bottle until she's latched on properly.
