My husband and I have made the decision (since our son is only a month away from 1) to go ahead and start him on whole cow's milk. He's eaten ice cream with me before, and hasn't shown any signs of lactose problems, and so far, we haven't had a problem with the milk itself. Of course we are going to need a few more days to watch and make sure, but I do a lot of research (throughout my pregnancy and every day since :) ) so I know that doctors and many others recommend waiting until 12 months and all are very urgent and specific about that. I don't see one month making an overwhelming difference...but maybe there is another mom who has done this who could offer reassurance?

My sister started my niece on whole cows milk when she was 10 months and she did fine. My niece refused the bottle and formula after being weened of the breast.
My daughter is alergic to cows milk, formula, and dairy. We give her unpasturized goats milk and she is growing and developing normally. Your baby will be fine and whole cows milk is a whole lot cheaper than formula.

oh yes yes yes it is just fine to give your son cow's milk! i'm soooo ready to be done breastfeeding my 11 month old twins, and their doctor said i had to wait until they were 12 months old... i asked why and he said, "because that's the best age to do so." LOL rriiiiiggghhhhttt.... they are drinking it just fine, and i can go back to "regular" life now not having to breastfeed!! so go ahead with confidence that you're doing the right thing for your baby! :)

My daughter's doctor recommended starting her off on whole cows milk at 10.5 months, since there is no sign of milk allergies in either of mine or her fathers families.. she's now almost 16 months and has not had any reaction, still loves milk more than anything else, and it never did any damage to her intestines.

I asked my doctor the other day because my daughter is now 10 months and she said no because if you start 2 early they can develope allergy problems when they are older.

Thanks to everyone for their helpful responses!!! Walker is doing fine with the whole milk so far...he doesn't seem to even notice the difference - and it is SO much cheaper than formula! Hopefully it will continue to go well...thanks again! :)

we started out son drinking regular milk in a sippy cup around 11 months. A little bit here and there. Then he turned one year, we did the big switch. Formula went to Whole Milk, Bottle went to Sippy Cup. He was weaned off both in less than 3 days.

Good luck!

When I took my little girl for her 4 month shots the nurse told me that now they say you can start your baby on whole fat cow's milk between 9 and 12 months. Sounds like you're prepared and are aware of your son's reactions to certain foods, give it a try : )
