My daughter is 8 months and had 2 UTIs, her doctor wants to put her thru invasive and torturous tests called a VUCG where they inject dye through a cath and take xrays. Has anyone else had this problem and should I wait to do this test?

Hi yes my little girl got i think it was 5 in her first 15 months, they had a hand in a Failure to Thrive for her and a massive % drop on the weight charts. I didnt really have anyway of stopping them and yes i changed the nappy often and did all the right things like that. My dr did an ultrasound after her 3rd they do this to check for any scar tissue on the kidneys. This should really be the first test they do not some invasive test. Ask for the ultrasound first maybe even get them to order a full abdo one. If that shows something then look at the other tests. I am sure there are other things they can do first and an ultrasound is a lot less radiation. You will most like find she will grow out of them by 18 months but still get the odd one here and there.
Here are a couple of ideas to help prevent them.
Get her to drink atleast 200mls of water a day not formula just water. Hydration is a big aspect in UTIs.
Use only soap free and fragrance free bath wash.
Dont use powder or to many creams.
And always wipe front to back.
I really wouldnt rush into huge tests unless has has several more of them and of course check with an actual Peadiatricain dont know if you are seeing one or not. Watch her weight though, if she starts dropping weight and loosing lines on the % charts one of the side effects of UTIs is Failure to Thrive. The biggest thing you need to remember with this is that this sort of Failure to Thrive is not our fault in anyway i know this i a scary thing for someone to tell you about your baby scared the crap out of me.
Good luck and definately seek a second opinion if they wont consider the ultrasound first.

I did when I was little, but I don't remember it cuz I wasn't even 2. My mom said I always had a uti. They did a surgery of some sort (i don't know what it is) and it fixed it. Until I got older of course, I get them all the time now. I live off of AZO cranberry pills. (and NO it's not b/c of sex.) I get them from coke, orange juice, too much sugar... pretty much anything!
I would just research the tests online and maybe get a 2nd opinion! I wish you the best.
